Horror/Scary Newsletter by Dawn
Talking about the use of masks, which is common in slasher movies. The villain wears a mask to hide away their possibly human identity. Yet trying to perform as one of them brings up a problem. |

"Do you like scary movies?"
There is a special place in the horror genre for slasher movies. Writing a script for them probably has a variety of challenges then more gets involved in order to make it to a movie, including costume. It is common for many slasher movie villains to wear a mask while they are wielding chaos, causing mayhem and well, slashing people. The movie that uses the line about scary movies, Scream, has the whole outfit of hiding but the mask is one particularly displayed. You can find many different merchandise items with the mask on t hem from this movie if you shop at Hot Topic. While we can see how the movie writers can use masks, it made me wonder about other types of writing.
Does your short story villain need to wear a mask? How do you describe the mask and is there a reason(background story) behind it?
It certainly seem like an option when trying to write slasher style stories, no matter the word count length. Well, the more you describe things the more words will be used but still. Doesn't matter if it's a short story or a novel, there is probably a way to use a mask in your story. The reason behind the mask is also very much free for inspiration with many options available depending on what works best within the world and conflicts involved. What happened to the antagonist in the past to make them into this scary monster that people must run from and trip along the way?
I also have another question, since I have this possible audience. As I've mentioned before that while I'm not a big fan of horror movies and I rarely attempt the writing of anything scary, I do have an interest in the music of Ice Nine Kills. In fact, I want to do a drag king performance that incorporates their slasher movies songs along with the cover they did of Walking on Sunshine. However, I'm stuck on the costume and makeup. Drag performances mean lip syncing, which requires the audience to be able to see your lips during the performance. Mask usually covers that part. Do I try to recreate the mask in makeup? Which movie villain should I pick (other than the clown one cause many people use that from It)?
If you have any suggestion let me know. Or just tell use what you think could work for a slasher horror story when it comes to wearing masks.
