May the fifth month is named after the goddess Maia.


Letter from the editor

Maia is either the Greek or Roman goddess of growth and fertility. My research suggests both, so I suggest a little more research to determine which.

May is the month of spring, growth, and fertility. It is linked to both Celtic and Roman celebrations. It is also linked to the Latin word Maiora which means elders. The Saxon word Primilce, meaning three milkings, refers to the belief that cows could be milked three times a day in May.

May Day was the day to watch for witches. It was also a day for dancing around the May Poll, crowning the May Queen by the May King, and making May Baskets. If you wash your face in the May dew it brings beauty and luck.
