“Opposites attract, and I think temperament is so fundamental that you end up craving someone of the opposite temperament to complete you.” – Susan Cain
He’s wrong for me – isn’t he?
You read about it often and you see it in the movies – opposites attract. But why, on the face of it, does Mr. Wrong or Ms. Wrong turn out to be the right one? Why was Belle attracted to the Beast? Poor Cinderella attracted to the Prince? Why is an extrovert attracted to an introvert? Opposites find connections on a more “personal” level. This newsletter will explore the “Opposites Attract” tropes in romance – the different opposite attraction scenarios and what makes them appealing to the reader.

Typically, the opposites attract troupe is when two people completely different from each other are attracted to each other, but sometimes, unlikely pairings are just what one needs.
One of the underlying reasons why opposites attract works is the stuff under the surface – the personal level. One of the tells is the banter that goes back and forth between the couple. It’s usually witty, can be to the point, but it’s often laced with undertones of each individual’s morals, values and ethics, which often very similar to the other’s. The back and forth is usually reflective of the underlying chemistry between the pairing.
There are a lot of examples that fit into this troupe. For example, there’s the hardened cowboy and city girl, the “I have no idea what a baseball is” and the bright sports star. There’s the grumpy girl/boy and the sunshine opposite. There’s the good girl and the rebel where the girl thinks she can save the rebel. There’s the Type A person and the ‘go with the flow’ opposite. Also, there’s they come from totally different worlds troupe – big name celebrity and just a humble farmer.
What makes the attraction work is that the characters are forced to explore their personalities on a deeper level – maybe the opposites share an understanding from a rough childhood, or have experienced a ‘slight’ when younger that they connect over.
Behind the banter is a deeper issue the couple can understand together – they just have to get past the “I don’t think I like you” stage by connecting to those deeper issues which brings them together. Ultimately, that’s the journey we want to go on with these characters.

Feedback from my Romance/Love newsletter dated: 16 APR 25 “Wishing”
There was no feedback on my last Romance/Love newsletter.
On my newsfeed I asked:
Have you ever been attracted to a person who was pretty opposite of you? How did it go?
Elycia Lee ☮ Weekend! My hubby is an early riser, he is grounded, realistic, doesn't sing, play any musical instrument, very neat, disciplined, diplomatic, patient, calm at all times. He is really into food. I am a total opposite of everything. I am a nocturnal, an idealist, creative, I sing, play the piano, I am messy, impulsive, impatient, short-tempered. I m not that info food. I'm more into creative hobbies such as writing or art journalling. An example of our everyday life, I would look at the sky and say: "Look, a star!" And he would say: "No, it is a satellite." Such a killjoy.
JCosmos my wife and I are proof that opposites attract. She is Korean, I am American, I am extroverted, she is introverted, I am a bit of a slob, she is a neat freak, I am horrible at managing money, she is a genius at finance, I am very creative, and she is very pratical and down to earth. I am a mad scopio and she is a mercurial gemini, I am a goat and she is a pig (Chinese years that is) I am progressive and she is conservative, I am fire and she is ice. I love surprises, and she does not, yet she surprises me every day. I am a morning person, and she is a night owl. I like cats, she likes dogs. But somehow we get it all to work!
