Curly Braces
Once past the first hurdle of uploading and saving a first written item here on Writing.Com, it's important to figure out where to put it so that it can have more exposure.
New members to the site (up to 31 days) have the unique benefit of their own aggregate page where their work will be displayed Read and Review a Newbie . After that, it's onto the big leagues.
Showing off our favorite pieces can be as easy as inserting the item ID number into a form on the plug pages and leaving a little comment in the provided text field.
Then, there are the pages where the link to a piece of writing has to be typed out to create a working link. Any contest requires some type of link. Contest hosts will not go through someone's portfolio to find a story. Advertising on the Newsfeed requires knowledge of linking.
The first and last character to type for a working link is always ALWAYS the opening and closing Curly Braces. These { and }.
On the QWERTY keyboard, they are located to the right of P. The first character on those keys are [ and ]. To make them curly, use the Shift key.
Keyboards designed for other languages can hide those Curly Braces in other places. To fully use this site, it is paramount that you locate them and find out what you have to do to type them out.
Luckily, the site makes it easy to create most links.
If you want to use an emoji from the bar above most text boxes, all you have to do is click on it and it will automatically get copied so all you have to do is paste it into your item or forum post or Newsfeed post.
If you want to link to an item, you can click on the item ID number. One click will copy the number, a second click will turn it into a item link. See what that looks like in the bottom of this newsletter. Ideally, follow the instructions there to learn how to create one or more link types and collect a trinket for it.
Why are the Curly Braces so important to learn? Because they make using this site easier. It's a one and done skillset to acquire. Once you have the basics figured out, you have the whole power of the site at your fingertips.
