First and foremost, Writing.Com was created and is lovingly maintained by The StoryMaster and The StoryMistress. They are the Senior Staff (red cases). Ultimately the direction in which the site is headed, the overall maintenance, the introduction of new features, and the final arbitrator of all disputes rests in their very capable hands.
But there are only two of them, and some of the responsibility for keeping the site running on an even keel has been delegated to a handful of members. At the time I wrote this newsletter (Sunday, 8 June at 2pm), there were the following number of members of whom I speak:
Senior Moderators (purple case): 6
Moderators (blue case): 64
Preferred Authors (yellow case): 439
These are the members loosely tasked with helping answer questions that arise from any members, ensuring items are properly rated, handling disputes between members at the lowest possible level, and writing newsletters, just to name a few of these responsibilities. Higher levels are accorded more responsibilities as part of their acceptance of that higher level.
Promotions to these levels are made by the Senior Staff, and are based on a number of criteria, including positive interaction and involvement within the WDC community. For the complete list of criteria, check out the following entries in the WDC Reference Guide, "Writing.Com 101" :
"Promotion to Preferred Author"
"Promotion to Moderator"
The remaining members that are part and parcel of Writing.Com include Memorialized Authors (white case), Registered Authors (black case) and Registered Members (gray case). There are more than 100,000 members making up these categories. If you're interested, you can check out the Authors listing under the Navigation menu on the left side of the page. A Search window lists 18 different ways to view the membership.
For a complete explanation of the member Portfolio icons, see "Portfolio Icons" .
I listed the total numbers of active members to give you an idea of the support these members provide to help make your presence on site both rewarding and fun. When you ask a question, please be patient for the answer. When you make a suggestion, allow time for it to be processed. Some requests are processed quickly; other take a bit more time.
And on the occasion when you don't receive an answer and you feel enough time has passed, try asking again. Sometimes a rush of questions in a Help forum occurs and one may get lost in the flurry.
On behalf of all those members, we welcome you to Writing.Com, and hope you find a home here as we have done.

Thanks for spending time with me today. At the bottom of every newsletter is a section entitled:
followed by a text box. If you liked what you read (or if you didn't), please take time and drop me a line. I'd love to hear your ideas.
From the Newsfeed for "Do You Know Your Neighbor?"
From Beholden : Yes, often. Especially when doing reviews.
From Spud : Yes, I read other member's bio block. I enjoy learning about the unique people I share this space with.
From Ichabod Crane : Yeppers, and when doing reviews as well. I'm just nosey.
From Legerdemain : I do read them, and also their billboard. You learn so much about a person. I was once in court, during voir dire, the judge asked what everyone's bumper stickers said.
That must have been interesting.
From Pensivity : Of course! It's most helpful when reviewing an item. Is the author a newbie, or is English a second language for them? Or, am I reviewing someone entirely above my own writing level?
From deemac : Always. If they've completed one, it helps me judge the kind of review that would be most helpful to them.
From Stik to My Own Beat : Sometimes. I actually tend not to do so before reviews, because I often review pieces that need mechanical/structural work. An author's background feels less relevant in that context.
(On that note, I wonder how many people are bewildered by my bio.)
Well, that made me look.
From Drew : No, I have not.
Not even a little curious?
From Susie : Yes occasionally. It's nice to get an insight into other member's interests, hobbies etc.
From Rick Dean - Dinosaur : If I'm going to read something from their portfolio I try to read the story first so that it won't affect my opinion of their story. Afterwards if I'm curious I may look, but not before.
Understandable.
From Max Griffin 🏳️🌈 : This reminded me to update my own bio-block, something I've not done in years. I added some recent stories. Maybe someone will read them. Maybe not...
From TheBusmanPoet : Yes I do.
It looks like people are all over the board when it comes to checking out a member's biographical information. Most say they do, and that's a good thing, in my opinion.
