Desperately Seeking
At any given moment, there are dozens of member-run contests and activities available here on Writing.Com. Many of these activities suffer from low participation.
Sometimes, low participation is because there is something else taking up people's attention on a massive scale, but more often than not, members didn't know about the contest or activity because it wasn't properly advertised.
Your first and best options to advertise (and find) contests and activities should always be the two plug pages set up for that purpose. Please. Pretty PLEASE with sprinkles on top, use these pages to advertise the items for which you want to attract a lot of participants.
Two members have created lists for contests and activities, but you have to know about those lists to be able to find them. And while the members who host and keep these items do an amazing job at keeping their lists current, they are the only ones who can edit those pages and thus some things on those pages might be timed out, deleted, or not in session.

So, the next time you're offering a contest or activity and wondering why letting the select group of your followers know about it on the Newsfeed doesn't yield the amount of participation you want, ask yourself whether you have posted them in the proper plug pages. It's free and easy!
Where do people keep finding contests on the site?

Replies to my last Contests & Activities newsletter "Collapse of NaNoWriMo" that asked: How many times (if ever) did you attempt to win at NaNoWriMo? How many times did you win?
Sumojo wrote: Yes how I agree with you about not using the newsfeed to promote contests. I always check the Current Contests and Activities sites but often miss things when they’re only on the newsfeed.
Another gripe of mine is when waiting for results of a contest for weeks only to find the Winner was notified in the newsfeed. Surely the results should be published on the contest’s page. One shouldn’t have to ask the Contest’s owner for the results.
Sum1 wrote: It would seem that someone couldl host a contest in November called 'WDC WriMo'. The goal woule be the same as NANOWRIMO, canvas people to donate GP's to sponsor those entering the contest, etc. It could be set up as a forum/activity. I'm not volunteering, you and I both know my activity level has not been high in the past few years, mainly due to fatigue, and my work schedule. But I'm now retired. I'm still not volunteering....
JL Richter wrote: RE: NaNoWriMo ~ I learned of NaNoWriMo in 2007, and wrote every year until its collapse (17 years in total). I wrote in four different regions, in three different states across the US. What I loved most was the community of writers I became a member of; the friends I've made, the new authors I got to see published. While I mourn the loss of the organization and challenge, I'm glad to have found a new writing community where I might still flourish.
StephBee wrote: Thanks for writing about NaNoWriMo. When I first started "cutting my teeth" as a novelist, I participated in NaNoWriMo in 2009, 2010, 2013, and 2014. Each year I won. My goal was to get the 50K and I always did. Then my schedule because crazy as the boys got older and I couldn't participate like I wanted to it. Sad to see it go in a way, because the simple concept, 50K in 30 years is a big motivator. I think when "you" get away from that, then you lost your message/audience.
John wrote: Any writing contest or activity you put any effort into is a success.
There are occasions I write for a contest but do not enter.
