Taking breaks to keep things dresh.

Letter from the editor
Leave of Absence

As a newbie, you just got here. Why would this letter discuss taking a break? Because everyone needs a vacation sometime.

Getting involved here and making friends is great fun. Writing, reviewing, entering contests, and socializing with blog posts replies or on the newsfeed quickly become a way of life.

Life on the outside keeps going. And sometimes, it means your involvement here has to be put on hold.

Ideally, you have a plan at the ready for the timeliness of your leave. Before you log out, go through your portfolio organize it a little bit.

Are there items that you hope to find reviews for upon your return? Move them to the top or designate them as your highlights.

Do you have some things on Work in Progress and you know it's not ready for a review? Set it to private. Or label it as a Work in Progress.

Have you opened up any discussion forums? Do they need monitoring? If they can just linger while you're away, but you don't want anyone to post, you can limit the ability to group members only. And then you make yourself the only group member with access.

Did you start any initiative that has garnered participants? Ask if someone can volunteer to take over the duties while you're gone.

If these options aren't working for you, set your items to private for the time being. Just be sure to reopen them when you come back and want people to take part again.

One good tip (that I read in another newsletter) is to add the word "CLOSED" to any forum title when you don't want any participation for a while. It's seen quick and easily, and nobody wanders into the forum and posts things and then wonders why you don't reply for a while.

What things about Writing.Com will you miss when you take a break?

Excellent newsletter topic, Annette. I just helped someone new on just this subject yesterday in one of the Help forums, so perfect timing.
