Love under the midst of storm
We are currently in the stormy season here in the Philippines, with various typhoon signals ranging from 1 to 5. During high signal warnings, we often find ourselves staying at home. While the heavy rain can be beneficial, it also brings a sense of sadness and fear, especially when accompanied by cold weather.
I relate this experience to the conflicts commonly found in romantic stories.
Conflict, in storytelling, is a fundamental element that creates tension and drives the narrative forward. It involves the struggle between opposing forces, where characters face obstacles or dilemmas that prevent them from achieving their goals. This struggle can manifest as internal, external, or a combination of both.
There are two main types of conflict: external and internal.
Conflict is crucial for any story as it creates tension, suspense, and engages the reader. It allows characters to develop, reveals their motivations, and ultimately shapes the story's outcome. Without conflict, a story lacks direction and purpose.(From Google)
Here are some ideas to think about that are good as conflicts in our romance story:
1. Storm Signal 1: Sensitivity to Differences - This conflict arises between the two main characters, who come from different backgrounds. Their contrasting likes, dislikes, beliefs, attitudes, and fears create tension in their relationship.
2.Storm Signal 2: Sensitivity to Surroundings - This is a common theme in classic romance tales. The conflict often stems from the opinions and actions of people surrounding the lovers. A famous example is "Romeo and Juliet," where the main characters' love is challenged by their feuding families.
3. Storm Signal 3: Sensitivity to Life's Impact - This conflict reflects the everyday struggles we all face, such as poverty, illness, and life events that may threaten to separate the characters. These challenges are natural and relatable.
While some may wish for conflict to be absent from love stories, as romance storytellers, we understand that conflict is essential to keep the narrative engaging. Just as our God Creator and author of our life allows difficulties and challenges in our lives for personal growth, conflict adds depth to relationships.
As long as love is rooted in faith—manifested through trust, sincerity, and belief in one another—nothing can separate us. Even when faced with conflicts, we can still reach a happy ending.
As it is often said, Love conquers all.
