WDC August Site Contest
The task is simple: Write a short story using the image prompt as inspiration!
Excerpt: It had once been a burrow built on the edge of the Mojave Desert, a burrow such as the wombles generally live in, but in recent years it had been deepened considerably. It could now conceivably be called… a bunker.
Excerpt: No one knew how the boats got there; they just appeared overnight as if by magic. We were all stunned. We had been on this island for what seemed like an eternity, maybe it was an eternity….
Excerpt: “They’re late.”
“Honestly, there’s very little incentive for them to show up at all,” my assistant, Marie, rightly noted.
Excerpt: Ruthie Rivers didn't like to think about dying, but at eighty-seven, death had become the unwelcome guest at every doctor's appointment, every obituary read, and in every bout of fatigue--those coming more frequently now. She doubted any old woman alive enjoyed thinking about aging, not when they still had a taste for life. But the thought was there, leering as she clutched her shoulder and fell back into her wooden chair.
Excerpt: At the bar of the Crown, Percy Bailey ordered his fourth pint of Guinness. He sat, straight backed on his usual stool.
| | Kindness (E) Short story of kindness and the wonderful effect it can have #2285018 by Dragonfly |
Excerpt: On a low sagging branch of an ancient giant oak tree, sat an Apple Gall being, named OH-WeL. OH-WeL, like all Apple Gall beings, had been created by a oak gall wasp.
Excerpt: Melia searched through her drawer of witch lights. Most of them were stubs, but she needed an unburnt candle for the next coven gathering. The most intact one she had was blue.
Excerpt: Blindfolded, hands bound and furious, Giselle kicked with all her might at the guy who'd abducted and tied her up. He grunted every now and then but just kept walking with her flung over his shoulder like inconvenient baggage.
Awesome daily prompts and a great prize!

This month's question: What is your advice for writing a good short story?
Send in your answer below! Editors love feedback!
Last month's "Short Stories Newsletter (July 16, 2025)" question: How do you describe dark days?
Stik to My Own Beat : Oddly enough, I tend to have more SAD symptoms in the spring. And my expression of depression tends to be more indicative of how men do so: through irritability, aggression, and taking more impulsive risks.
With harsh light trying to poke through, creating harsh shadows and glare.
(I find gray days to be calming.)
Angelica Weatherby- Bday WDC 9 : I got a new idea not captured yet.
S 🤦 : Life.
Jay O'Toole : They are tests of the soul, but always we must focus on the Hope, that comes. "Fireflies and Bunny Hopes"
N.A Miller : temptations of faith.
Conrad Moriarty : Damp
Humble Poet PNG - Celebrating! : I spend less time describing dark days than I do looking for brighter days.
TheBusmanPoet : As ominous times.
Susie : Depressing and Gloomy
jackson : In a variety of ways, it depends on why they are dark.
Tannus : It's always dark except for Philly. It's always sunny in Philadelphia.
Friendly Neighborhood Derg : I would call a dark day nighttime.
MJones Transforming … Again : Dark days are opportunities. They should not be avoided, but rather, embraced … confronted head on … for they hold the lessons we need to learn in order to heal and grow into better versions of ourselves.
keyisfake : People, giving up on a hopeful future and their dreams for themselves and their children.
Thanks to everyone for your responses! L~
