Just Hangin'

One of the things that frustrates me when reading short stories is the ending. It's worse when it happens in a novel, but I get all hateful when it comes to a short story. And the annoying thing is cliffhangers. Oh sure, an author might put a cliffhanger at the end of a novel in hopes the reader buys Part 2, right?

But what happens at the end of a short story? A cliffhanger might work if the story is part of an anthology, so the readers keep on reading. So what should we look for as authors when ending a story?

*Firework*  Did you end the conflict? Was it resolved?

*Firework*  Did the protagonist grow or obtain closure?

*Firework*  Will the reader have some emotional empathy or impact?

*Firework*  Did you solve the mystery?

*Firework*  Did you wrap it up and echo the story's beginning?
When you're in edit mode, remember to keep things simple. It's a short story. Keep the character list short, and only use what is necessary to move the plot along.

And please, don't leave us hangin'. Edit on, and Write On!

But the thought was there, leering as she clutched her shoulder and fell back into her wooden chair.
