Fantasy Newsletter by Dawn
Taking the time to put some thought over the use of magic for things like search and rescue, firefighting and other types of services that would really come in handy. Some interesting possibilities for fantasy and science fiction novels when considering how first responders could be useful. |

Watching the tv shows my mom likes has lead to some interesting thoughts in relation to the novels that I enjoy writing. I've always been more of a fantasy type person, reader wise at least. Granted, in writing I have done mostly romance and some contemporary young adult stuff, there is still a drive to write the fantastical, which is part of why I write this newsletter. Watching shows like Buried in the Backyard bring about some different ideas. That brings me to the topic for this month. Some of the shows where detectives are trying to solve different cases have missing persons or trying to find graves/evidence. While there are animals that can assist with some of the tasks, like cadaver dogs, we do have difficulties due to the limitations of being human. What would happen if magic existed?
Imagine a fire department or search group made up of characters from X-men.
What if there was a police officer or detective who was a witch?
Someone goes missing and the agency brings out the crystal balls and pendulums. A fire breaks out at the top of an apartment building and flying mutants assist in bringing flame managers or ice throwers to where they can be helpful. There are so many options.
Having magic or some type of ability, like that of super heroes or people with genetic mutations would come in handy. So much could get solved. Would there be less cold cases? But would there also be terrible things done by people with those abilities? Imagine a standoff like the old west gun fights, but with magic. It would solve some problems but also create others. Still, could make for some interesting stories.
The problems can also make for conflict in a story. Like with the genetic mutant situation. There is a big problem in some of those stories with how the government handles their existence. Often people with magic or strong abilities are feared or contained in attempts to control/use them. The uses for the agencies could be willing or it could be like putting convicts on fire fighting lines. Perhaps they have to take part in combating challenges like wild fires or be partnered with a regular human as a police duo.
How do you want to write the story? What abilities does the character have? How can they be used? Do they want to be used? And do other people believe they exist. For now, not counting the mutant series, I've got ideas that include a detective/witch duo that solves crimes and a romance where a witch falls in love with a cowboy. Nothing first responder yet on the cowboy one but he does help with a missing horse, so close enough. There are so many possibilities for what the characters could do in that type of world and that means there are also many monsters or problems for them to face.
What do you think? Which would you pick?
Witch Detective
Mutant Firefighter
Elf Search and Rescue
Magic Military Unit
Demon Hunting Dogs
EMT Healer

What do you think the world would look like if magic wielders had jobs like police or fire-people?
Last month, my newsletter discussed the existence of romance fantasy stories also known as romantasy. Here is a comment sent by a reader over the topic of the subgenera:
Comment by S🤦♂️ :
Romantasy is an interesting beast. It could probably be said to trace its way back to the legend of Tristan and Isolde, but could be even older.
I actually find this type of romance the only type I have succeeded at writing (even if the success is in my own mind).
