Paranormal romance is a popular subgenre of Romance. The term was coined in the 1990’s and the genre really came into its own in the 2000’s. Paranormal romance is generally an offshoot of Gothic romance and is “typically” known for dark, brooding men, as well as strong female protagonists. It combines core romantic elements with supernatural, otherworldly, characters such as vampires, shapeshifters, and witches and usually involves deep world building. The genre is a great compliment to this time year, and the characters generally make paranormal romance a fun and suspenseful read during Autumn’s build up to Halloween.
This newsletter will explore familiar tropes of the genre that make it a popular read this time of year.

Here are some familiar tropes found in Paranormal romance:
Vampires vs Werewolves – the age old classic of “good vs evil,” takes on a different form when you have vampires and werewolves sparing. An outgrowth of this would be forbidden or secret between lovers.
Beauty and the Beast – one of our lovers hate what they are or think they are a monster. The other lover discovers an inner courage through love.
Soulmates through Time – the journey is finding the immortal soulmate.
Protector -Our protector can be supernatural or not, but generally you’ll find these characters are demon-slayer or vampire-slayer archetypes, protecting their lover.
Marked or Cursed one of our protagonists must take a journey to break the curse and falls in love.
Mates save each other – finding their true soulmate can bring them salvation.
The movie series, Twilight, does a good job incorporating many of these paranormal tropes. Do you use these in your writing?
Question for you: What’s your favorite Paranormal romance story or movie?

I had no feedback from my Romance/Love newsletter dated 3 SEP 2025/Wanton.
Feedback from my Newsletter Question dated 23 SEP 2025:
You're in love! You open the door and find out your lover is:
A - A Vampire
B -A Werewolf
C-The ghost of Patrick Swayze
D - Voldemort the Wizard
E - Gandolf the Wizard
Patron Of Lost Clauses
B - A werewolf
Morticia Wednesday Megan Rose
The Ghost Of Patrick Swayze. I loved Patrick. He was my favorite actor. Now, it is Johnny Depp. I will also take Edward Cullen and Jacob. If only. I admire the paranormal.
Roy
Would "Yes" qualify for an answer?
Amethyst SkellyBones Angel
Gandolf? Honestly, I'm not culturally aware enough to answer this, but E seems like the kindest person, or more specifically the least likely to inflict harm on me or others.
Kåre เลียม Enga
A. Here's my lips, my neck, my eternity. I give you all the moonlight you can hold.
B. I didn't mind nights of staining white satin. It was washing out the blood all by myself the morning after that was tiresome as they were too worn out by me to help.
C. And there he was... as youthful and beautiful as ever, ready to dance with me. His pale smile was transparent, his arms as light as feathers.
D. Tom Riddle was dark, handsome, desperate. Maybe if I had returned his hugs, history would have told a different tale.
E. I wouldn't have minded. I was willing. No need to pull out his wand.
SpookyBee is a 911 dispatcher for LAPD. Her story, "Young Witchcraft," is now available on Kindle? Rachel would have Cotton Mather rolling over in his grave. She's in love with a human but will a werewolf drive them apart? |
