H

ow do you feel about writing prompts? Do you love them? Find them inspirational? Do you hate them? Find them restrictive?

Yeah, me too! No, no, don't worry, I'm not reading your mind or anything like that. I have a love/hate relationship with prompts, so I am firmly in the "all of the above" camp. Maybe you are as well.

For me, when the perfect prompt hits, it will set off a whirlwind of creative writing. Unfortunately, most prompts don't do this for me. I know some people are able to write with any prompt, but my muse does not work that way.

Maybe you are developing a new writing contest or activity. Maybe you have been running one for a while now. Have you been wondering if prompts are a good idea for yours? I say it is completely up to you and what works for you. Here are a few things to keep in the back of that beautiful brain of yours as you consider.

If you usually offer contest prompts, you could occasionally offer a round that does not have one. You could also offer multiple prompts. Along that line of thought, you could also have one be an "open prompt". There are always options.

Sorry to break this to you, but judging a contest with one uniform prompt is no easier than an open prompt. One prompt and 10 entries can still produce 10 very different pieces of writing. The reason to have prompts is to provide potential inspiration to your potential contest entrants.

Prompts or no prompts, whichever option you choose will be the right one for your contest.
