Hey there, fellow mystery lovers,
Can you believe Halloween is almost here? We finally are here in that wonderful month when Halloween arrives!
There's something absolutely magical about curling up with a cozy mystery when the leaves are falling and there's a chill in the air. And let me tell you—I've found some absolute gems that are perfect for the spooky season. We're gonna take a look at five different authors who write Halloween cozy mysteries, some funny, others family themed but all themed for those who love Halloween.
I'm so excited to share some fantastic authors who know exactly how to blend murder, mayhem, and Halloween magic into the perfect autumn read. Grab your pumpkin spice latte (or apple cider, I don't judge!) and let me introduce you to these talented writers. First, we begin with writer, Jennifer J. Chow, whose stories often involve cooking, you're in for such a treat!
Her books, “Star Crossed Egg Tarts (Magical Fortune Cookie) #2”, bring together delicious food, charming characters, and mysteries that keep you guessing until the very end. There's something about her writing that feels like coming home—warm, inviting, and full of heart. Her stories often feature strong family bonds and cultural traditions that make them extra special, especially during the holiday season. When Halloween rolls around in her books, you can expect decorations, community events, and of course, a murder that needs solving before the trick-or-treaters finish their rounds.
Gretchen Archer (writing as Addison) - Southern Charm Meets Sleuthing
Now, if you love a good dose of Southern hospitality with your homicides, you'll absolutely adore what Addison brings to the table. Her Halloween book set, “Cozy Halloween Cozy Mystery Gift Boxed set”, will be just in time for this year’s festivities. Her mysteries are clever, funny, and packed with colorful characters who feel like people you'd actually want to grab coffee with (well, maybe not the murderer). Halloween in her books often means costume parties, fall festivals, and plenty of opportunities for mischief—both innocent and deadly. The witty banter alone is worth the read, but throw in a compelling whodunit and you've got yourself a winner.
Kathleen Bacus writes mysteries that make you laugh out loud while you're trying to solve the crime. In her Halloween book set, “Halloween Haunting: Halloween Cozy Mystery Gift Box" set for your holiday reading and enjoyment. Her protagonist often finds herself in the most hilariously awkward situations, and Halloween just amplifies the chaos in the best possible way. Think haunted houses, costume contests gone wrong, and small-town drama that would make anyone want to be a fly on the wall. Bacus has this incredible gift for balancing humor with genuine suspense—you're giggling one moment and frantically flipping pages the next. Her Halloween-themed stories capture all the fun and frenzy of the season while delivering a satisfying mystery.
Oh, Tonya Kappes! If anyone knows how to write a Halloween cozy mystery, it's her. She's got multiple series under her belt, and several of them feature paranormal elements that make them absolutely perfect for October reading. We're talking actual ghosts helping solve murders, psychic abilities, and all sorts of supernatural shenanigans. Her Olivia Davis Paranormal Mystery series and Magical Cures Mystery series are particularly enchanting during Halloween season. Kappes creates these charming small-town settings where everyone knows everyone (and everyone's secrets), and she weaves in humor, heart, and just the right amount of spookiness. Her books never feel too scary—just delightfully eerie.
Jesse Q. Sutanto brings something slightly different to the cozy mystery table—her books have a bit more edge while still maintaining that cozy comfort we all crave. Her Halloween themed series, “Vera Wong’s Guide to Snooping (on a dead man)”, showcases her love of the macabre and darkly told tales.
Her stories often feature complex family dynamics, diverse characters, and plots that take surprising turns. While not all her books are strictly Halloween-themed, her atmospheric writing and knack for creating tension make her work perfect for autumn reading. There's something deliciously dark about her mysteries that pairs beautifully with the Halloween season. She's not afraid to go a little deeper into family secrets and cultural expectations, which adds wonderful layers to her whodunits.
There's something special about reading cozy mysteries during Halloween, isn't there? Maybe it's because the season itself feels mysterious—the shorter days, the rustling leaves, the shadows that seem a little longer. These authors understand that Halloween isn't just about being scared; it's about community, tradition, fun, and yes, maybe a little harmless mischief.
The beauty of cozy mysteries is that they give us all the intrigue and puzzle-solving of traditional mysteries without the graphic violence or truly disturbing content. They're like a warm blanket on a cold October night—comforting, engaging, and just thrilling enough to keep your heart racing a bit.

Well, yippee!!! Welcome fellow readers and authors to the October mystery newsletter...the cool season is finally here!!!
Let's dive into the question of last month. In the Cozy September mystery newsletter last month, I asked a question in the first part of the newsletter. "Which Cozy mystery author's "red herrings" feel natural in her stories?
The 2nd question for the mystery newsletter is as follows: Which mystery author's character relocated from New York to run a bakery in a small town?
So, with everyone busy with the WDC celebrations and extra reading and writing in September, two people found time to write into the newsletter! First, was friend and contributor, Frighten Ðead the Witch Warp who wrote: Cozy mystery author's "red herrings" feel natural in her stories is Maddie Day.
Eve Calder's character is Kate McGuire, a baker who relocates from New York to run a cookie shop. and Jack o' Lantern who wrote: Thank you, Lady Dracula♥ Adore lol♥ , for featuring Death of a Clown in your latest newsletter. Just as a matter of interest, that was the first story I ever wrote to a prompt, and remains one of the few; I'm not very good at it. The prompt was to combine a clown college and a printer that prints on its own. The combination struck me as interesting, and I'm thrilled that you found it to your liking ~ Jack
You will both receive your choice of MB or Awardicon...I'll contact you tomorrow. I just want to thank you both, and I want to thank anyone that read this month's newsletter and found enjoyment...thank you so much for looking at and spending time on this newsletter.
Now, for the question of this month's newsletter for October: Which of the cozy Halloween mystery writer's books are known to feature costume parties, fall festivals?
The first 5 contributors will receive either a MB or Awardicon for their participation.
I do want to apologize for the editing errors I found in the description for last month's newsletter. It's all replaced now but it was there, and again, I'm sorry. I'll definitely work on better accuracy.
Well, my grandkids are still playing Roblox, as well as our youngest, though, she's a BIG kid now.
I love seeing this and video games still thrill my heart. I'm growing old(er) lol waiting on GTA 6 and I'd love to fly back to our home state to see our immediate family again, to watch my gamer son, and now our gamer grandkids play video games. lol
Take care till next month...November will be here soon. WOW! See you guys next month but till then, stay healthy, keep on writing and hug your family till next time. |
