About This Newsletter

This newsletter is all about one simple, powerful thing: getting you to write something this month. That’s it! No pressure, no word count, no genre rules—just a friendly, gentle nudge to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) and make a start.

We’re going to talk about beating the blank page, finding tiny pockets of inspiration, and celebrating the simple act of creating. Because every amazing story, poem, or world started with a single word. Let’s make yours happen!

Letter from the editor

Hi, I’m Adore lol♥ feels thankful♥ Author IconMail Icon a guest editor for the Noticing Newbies newsletter for this issue.

If you’re anything like the rest of us here, you might be looking at that vast, exciting world of Writing.com and thinking, “I need to outline my epic fantasy saga first,” or “I have to wait until I have a full, uninterrupted weekend to start my novel.”

Let me stop you right there. That is a myth.

The biggest hurdle in any creative endeavor is starting. The blank page is intimidating. That little blinking cursor feels like a judge waiting to critique your first sentence. But here’s the secret seasoned writers know: The first draft is simply you telling yourself the story.

It’s okay if it’s messy. It’s okay if you change your mind halfway through. The only way to get a finished piece is to have a started writing.

This month let’s silence the inner critic and ignore the pressure to be perfect. Your goal isn't to write a masterpiece; it’s to generate content. Think of it like chipping away at a block of marble. You’re just making the first cut.

We’re not asking for a novel. We’re asking for anything. Here are a few low-commitment, high-reward ways you can tackle your writing goal this month:

Set a timer for 10 minutes and just write. Don't lift your fingers from the keyboard. Write about your day, a funny thing your pet did, a dream you had, or a character's random thought. The subject doesn't matter; the continuous flow of words does. It's a fantastic warm-up and often sparks an idea you didn’t know you had.

Try a single-sentence story. Can you tell a complete tale in one powerful sentence? Or maybe try a 100-word drabble. Give yourself a specific prompt (like "a forgotten umbrella" or "the sound of rain on a tin roof") and stick to the word limit. Constraints can be liberating!

Do you have an old piece of writing—maybe from high school, a snippet from a decade ago, or even an old journal entry? Don't start from scratch! Go back and rewrite the first paragraph. Give an old character a new name. Change the setting. This counts as writing! You’re flexing those creative muscles without the pressure of having to invent a new world.

Poetry is wonderful because it celebrates brevity and feeling. Write a simple haiku (5-7-5 syllables) about the weather or your breakfast. Or try a free-verse piece focused on one color, one smell, or one memory. It’s pure expression, and it's a completely valid piece of writing.

Okay, you did it! You wrote a poem, a brain dump, or the first three sentences of a story. Now what?

Celebrate! Seriously, pat yourself on the back. You moved from thinking to doing. That is huge.

Save it to your Writing.com portfolio! This is what you’re here for! Once it’s saved, it exists. It’s real.

It’s part of your growing body of work. You don’t have to share it right away, but you can.

Explore the Community. We have an incredible, supportive community right here. When you’re ready, consider sharing your short piece for a non-critical review (just for encouraging feedback) or a critique (for constructive advice).

Remember, we all started where you are, and we’re here to lift you up.

Your journey here on Writing.com is entirely your own. Don't compare your Chapter One to someone else's Chapter Ten.

Just focus on your own progress.

This month, your mission, should you choose to accept it, is simply to write something. Just one piece, however small. Let’s shake hands with the blank page and introduce it to your first word.

Happy writing to you and maybe I'll see you another time. :D
