Romance: an ardent emotional attachment between two people. A love affair.
“Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope.” – Maya Angelou
How do you know she or he is interested in you? It’s the chemistry! It’s those non-verbal cues – lingering eye contact, unintentional closeness, and those small touches like a brush of a hand or a gentle push that lingers. It’s that witty banter between two people, but more importantly it’s that electric energetic exchange between two people that says: interested, attracted, and take me there!
Feedback from my last newsletter’s poll. Who’s your Guy?
Your #1 guy is “The Best Friend.” Also scoring in the polls was the Swashbuckler and the Warrior. – Thanks to everyone who took the poll.

Romantic chemistry starts when you have characters that connect with your readers. Your characters needs to be believable – warts and all. Let the readers peek into the characters – show us their strengths and weakness, their ups and their downs, and their highs and lows. Let’s see the characters as they are by themselves. For example, show us a courtesan that rarely if ever sleeps with her suitors. Or a rake with the reputation, who really isn’t. Romantic chemistry doesn’t work as well if the main characters aren’t fleshed out.
Now that we know our guy has a heart of gold, but is known to be a rake, and our girl isn’t as loose as she portrays, let’s dive into chemistry.
There are 4 elements that make that chemistry sizzle: physical attraction, intellectual attraction, social attraction, and emotional attraction.
Physical attraction: it’s that desire to want to touch and be touched. That touch warms the nerve endings and sends a zip down the spine.
Intellectual attraction: that interest to interact with someone because of their intellect and shared interests.
Social attraction: that desire to be around someone because of their confidence, ambition, likability and social traits. They make the room laugh and your heart sing.
Emotional attraction: that desire to connect with someone because of shared spiritual beliefs, emotional depth, and shared experiences.
Chemistry is not just about physical attraction. All four of these elements have to be in right balance to create the sizzle.
It’s important to really flesh out your characters first because when you do, the readers will come to know what the characters find believable in a romantic partner.
Do you have a story where the chemistry sizzles? Send in a link and I’ll share it my next Romance/Love Newsletter.

Feedback from my Romance/Love Newsletter dated: 29 OCT 25: “Who’s Your Guy?”
Kendra evans My best friend was my guy and now me and him are really happy because we have fun with everything that we do. We even make daily chores more fun by making games out of it. After that we sit and talk about everything that we done when we was growing up together.
BIG BAD WOLF is Howling It all depends on the situation. Some are a mixture.
Feedback from my Romance/Love Newsletter dated: 01 OCT 25: “Unworldly”
Osirantinous Goodness, lucky I responded to your newsfeed posting choosing vampires - since you highlighted my short story with a vampire protagonist . But I do like a couple of your other tropes - soulmates through time, protector. On the downside, it must be such a tough thing to say goodbye to the loves of your life as they reach the end of their life (presuming they're human).
Princess Megan Snow Rose Thanks for writing about vampires, werewolves and the paranormal. Thanks for including my Serenity Story in your Newsletter. This item doesn't get much recognition. I enjoyed this Romance Newsletter. Informative and resourceful.
StuffedBee is a 911 dispatcher for LAPD. Her Christmas story, "Mr. Christmas Elf" is available on Amazon in Kindle. Jules’ Christmas list is looking pretty pathetic. She needs a new muffler for her car and a hundred dollars for her root canal. Her niece is asking for an iPad, but all Jules can afford is a Barbie doll. The peppermint on the top? Her boyfriend dumps her in a text message.
Jules could use a little Christmas magic, so when Elvis pops up claiming that he was sent by Santa to fill her Christmas list, all she has to do is believe in the magic the season has to offer, but that’s one tall order for Jules. |
