Romance: an ardent emotional attachment between two people. A love affair.
Does love have a language? Gary Chapman seems to think so. He’s the author of the book, “The Five Love Languages.” He believes that there are different ways that people express and receive love and has narrowed it down to 5 different techniques. Once you understand your partner’s love language, you and your partner will have a more meaningful relationship experience. This holiday season I thought it might be a good idea to look at the 5 ways Chapman talks about and see how they fit into our lives as well as how we use them in our romance writing.

Do these “love’” languages find their way into your writing?
Words of affirmation
These are typically words of encouragement, praise, or appreciation. Do your main characters offer praise or encouragement to each other, for example: “Good job on that project, Susie. I’m impressed?” Or, another example: “You looked good out there.” (if one is doing some physical training for an event)
Quality Time
Do your main characters spend time together? Meet at the coffeehouse to enjoy a coffee and relax? Do they go on a date night? Do they share activities together? If you’re writing a regency romance, maybe they enjoy a house party in the countryside? Quality time is enjoying time spent together – even if it’s avoiding the bad guys.
Physical Touch
Do your character enjoy touching each other. No doubt in a romance, they do. Touch can range from simply holding hands to a kiss to what goes on between them when they close the bedroom doors. By using touch, the characters can express how much they care about each other.
Acts of Service
Do your characters do little gestures that are helpful to their partner? For example, cooking a breakfast or doing the dishes. While small, any act of service shows how thoughtful the other is of their partner. Gestures like these go a long way in demonstrating how one cares.
Receiving Gifts
Giving a gift like a ring to your partner is a way of showing how meaningful surprises touch the heartstrings. Does your story have a meaningful gift exchange in it? It doesn’t have to be a ring. Some items include a locket, a necklace, or even a handkerchief.
This holiday season look around you and see how these 5 areas fall into your life and assess how you present them in your romance writing. You just might be surprised.
