About This Newsletter

Noticing Newbies Newsletter by Dawn

Membership levels are important but can seem difficult at times when people don't have the funds to purchase the next level to get the bigger portfolio space. Luckily, there are ways to get help and that includes taking action by reading and reviewing for others.

Letter from the editor

There are many elements to consider when joining this wonderful writing web site. One of the biggest things, aside from what you want to write, is how to accomplish having more than 10 items at a given time. The free membership might catch someone's attention but the basic is often where many of us first start. I know, when I joined 20 years ago, my port was much much much smaller, so I didn't need all that much room. But then I started writing and things began to grow. Then came the time to decide what membership level was the best for my own needs. That might be something you will ask yourself over the years, as a newbie and beyond.

What size of portfolio do you have now?
Do you need a bigger one to hold more items?
How can you jump to the next step?

While buying is an option, that doesn't work for many of us. Instead, we have to find other ways. One way is through the use of gift points and a method to earn those varies from games on scroll, gifts from others and even submitting reviews. The review method can be a good way but it does take time. However, while you spend that time commenting on reviews, the reading of different writing might help you develop the skill to write even better stories.

So, yes, this is a long game plan method, not quite helpful if you need to change right away. It still can be an option and something as a newbie to consider. A review doesn't have to be overly extensive, though we do ask that you try to come up with some content that shows you did read the item. You don't need to be an expert to give a review either.

I also have a little advice too, when it comes to the review. While I am not an expert, I do have some experience as an editor (not just a writer of newsletters either) but also, I have been doing reviews on this site for many years. There have been some groups over the years that have offered advice and even mini courses in how to give reviews, which I both took as a student but also helped later teach. Not an expert but I am experienced. I've also been the receiver of reviews, since I have had writing on this site for 20 years.

*BulletV* It's okay not to do know to fix a story or poem. If you notice a spelling error or something, it's also okay to point that out.

*BulletP* What reaction do you have to the item? Does it evoke any emotions?

*BulletV* Is there something you don't understand?

The review doesn't need to be a long essay. It just needs to be something. And if you like reviewing, consider joining a group because you can get credit for doing reviews when you associate them with a group but that can be for another newsletter. The main focus is on getting started. Because it might sound technical, but a review is basically your reaction to what you read and what makes the item either work or not work for you. It is your opinion.

One suggestion: Try to say something nice. Even if it's something that needs a lot of work or that you really just don't like, find some good things to point out too. It just helps and will be easier for someone to accept if there is that little plus side too. It's sort of like how when giving a work critique someone might suggest the compliment sandwich. That is where you mention a good point, give the negative criticism but end with another good point. There are some studies that show people accept the criticism better in this format but I don't remember where I heard that or which class since that was years ago. Basics stand the same here. And if you send something nice, you might get a reward.

With the gift points you earn over the years, if you keep it up, that will help with the desired membership, whether that is upgraded or even premium.
