About This Newsletter

"The great lesson from the true mystics is that the sacred is in the ordinary." ~ Abraham Maslow

Letter from the editor

Daily

Today's Newsletter asks: Does spirituality require religion?

No. It does not. Although there is the English phrase "Doing something religiously" which implies doing one thing over and over by following a similar pattern, there is zero religion needed for such a pattern.

Abraham Maslow, mostly famous for his Hierarchy of Needs, says "the sacred is in the ordinary." This means that the mundane acts of daily living hold spirituality.

Religions, rather than inventing the concept of daily rituals, have tapped into humanity's innate desire for structure, repetition, rules, guidelines, and a feeling of accomplishment. And so, most religions have made daily introversion and prayer a requirement, if even for a few minutes.

The truth is that anyone can create a daily ritual all for themselves, and it doesn't have to do anything with religion.

In the Editor's Picks section below, you will find several activities and contests that offer a daily prompt for writing or that reward you for reading. You can also find two blogs that are updated daily. None of these writing and reading rituals require adherence to a specific doctrine, but they provide a scaffolding for a daily exercise in reading, thinking, writing ... and sometimes laughing.

Writers are often told: You should write every day. Rather than crumbling under the requirement, it might help to look at a time set aside for writing as a sacred moment. It doesn't have to be long. It doesn't have to be at the same time every day. The actual goal can be arbitrarily set to the lowest possible setting.
The amount of writing can be set to "More than one word."
A reading goal can be "Open the book and look at the page number."
Set the bar as low as needed. Make yourself successful.

You can do it.

Reap the reward of feeling a daily accomplishment.
