What has happened to the USPS deliveries?
I know in Florida there have always been some hiccups along the way since our very good postal worker retired several years ago. It's been a line of various part-timers since then.
I noticed something since my birthday came and left in February that I didn't receive a card from my daughter in Kentucky. She never fails to send me a card for my birthday. So, when a couple days passed by following my birthday, she sent me a text asking if I received her card. Of course I hadn't and told her so. I blamed it on new workers, clogs in the system as they tried to recuperate from all the Christmas traffic and were being easy on themselves. I figured it would show up within a day or two. But as the days went on, and my daughter texted again with the same question. I started to worry that something more was going on. Was there a theft? She usually sends a gift card with the birthday card, so I really hoped there was another reason it didn't get to me yet.
My daughter second-guessed herself about the clarity of her writing on the envelope whereby they may have confused a seven with a one. I told her the card will probably bounce back to her if that were the case. But I doubted she made any address error. I've received many cards from her over the years while wintering in Florida without any issue at all. They always got delivered.
A few weeks went by and my daughter texted me that my card got sent back to her. She took a picture of the address. I said it's perfectly correct and should have been delivered. I headed to my local post office and explained that I'm not getting my mail. Two counter workers looked at each other and rolled their eyes. I said: "I take it I'm not the only one with this problem?"
"No Ma'am. It's been tough finding people who want to do the work these days. Since we don't hire full time delivery persons as much as we used to, they don't seem invested in getting folks' mail into the proper mailbox. I said I noticed lots of mail just strewn about on the shelves outside the community locked boxes. It was never like that years ago.
I also checked with my local PO up North and was told my forwarding address was working, however, a large mail depot in the big city in my county was closed and only one mail sorting facility was operating...Very slowly!
So, as the days went on, my mail was getting flagged because I alerted them at both the North and South addresses. Suddenly, I started to receive mail again. One was postmarked in December, though. December until March? Not too long a wait, right?!!
Remember the old movie "Miracle On 34th Street?" Yeah, well that trustworthy Postal Service delivery no longer exists as far as I'm concerned! Therefore, neither does Santa Claus!
