Now every field is clothed with grass, and every tree with leaves; now the woods put forth their blossoms, and the year assumes its gay attire.~~Virgil

The Secret Garden

It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.~~Charles Dickens

Letter from the editor
April was the month that didn't really happen. It passed with my being stupidly sick, in bed, and, for most of it, asleep, coughing my head off, or simply uninterested in much of anything requiring thought. A few days ago, I woke up and, wonders of wonders, my head didn't hurt, my muscles remembered what movement was, and it didn't hurt to move my eyes!

Coffee in hand and tasting like pure heaven, I wandered outside at my hubby's urging to sit on the porch. Wrapped in a blanket over my jammies, I sat in the sun. Oh, and, wasn't it the most glorious of things! Looking across the lawn he'd mowed the night before, and over to the walking trail at the foot of our dead-end street, I saw that I hadn't missed my favorite part of Spring after all!

To me, it is the
Greening Tinge when leaves haven't popped fully out yet, but there is a hint, a promise, of green to come. The 'tinge' always sparks smiles in my soul, and I hadn't missed it! Hubby had tried to tempt me outside a few days earlier, but I'd been too sick to care. And here it was, as if it had waited! Three days later, the tinge is full on SPRING, leaves are out, and I didn't miss it after all!

A robin is fluttering around in the birch tree. She sits on one branch, then pops over to the one next to it, looks around, and repeats. Back and forth, back and forth. It's like she's standing in a new living room and deciding where to put the furniture! She started a nest, had it three-quarters together, tore it apart, and started over. This time it is centered on that second branch!

The hydrangea tree is covered in buds, as is the snowball tree. This morning, the white lilac tree in the backyard shared several sweet-smelling blossoms with me! The pink lilac in the front is holding off I think, until the backyard lilac finishes! While the maple tree is now in full leaf, the chokecherry is just now almost ready to bud.

There's a new nest of bunnies just the other side of our fence (smart mama!) where our pooch can't quiiiite reach! Spring is springing everywhere I look, and I am thankful and happy I didn't miss it. Cardinals are in full-on mating song. Lovely wake-up music!

It's Tuesday morning (at the moment) and my hubby just came in with an armful of lilac and deep purple lilacs! Mmmm! The house smells soo pretty! And I think back a few days, and appreciate them all over again!

I'm enjoying writing my newsletter! I haven't been able to string three words together in a month! It hurt my brain to think. Now I can think again. And while enjoying feeling so much better, it still gives me pause, because it was just a little thing, after all. Just the flue. Granted, the worst flue I've ever experienced, but still, just the flue. In the grand scheme of things, it could have morphed into something else, like bronchitis or pneumonia. It didn't. Hubby somehow didn't catch my bug. Yay! So I am not complaining, just appreciating. Massively appreciating!

It feels good to look around and see spring springing!! Saturday, we had a fire in the wood stove because we had a freeze warning. The last two days, the front and back doors are open, the windows are open. Letting the breeze blow the last of those nasty germs elsewhere! Hubby's talking redoing the front garden, washing windows, and finishing fertilizing the yard, Getting the wash done was exhausting!! Ah, but it'll come. Enjoy your spring (or fall as it might be!!) --lots of stuff to write about!
