Someone on the Newsfeed recently asked, “What do you like about Writing.com?” The first thing that came to my mind was how I enjoyed the way WDC built a “community” feel on the Website. That sense of community made it easier to search out feedback/reviews for items I wrote or created, and to receive feedback/reviews. So today, I thought I’d talk about some of my favorite community building forums along with some monthly contests that built that sense of community.

If you look at the Left Menu, You have 3 main categories, “Portfolio,” “Create Something,” and “Community.” If you go to community, it opens up a large sub-menu. If you look at the sub-menu you’ll find a link for “Message forums.” Click on that and you’ll see a lot of great forums that build community.
Several of the forums I’ve listed below are a great way to engage the WDC community and make friends. The 7/7 Forum has a lot of conversational topics and it’s a great way to meet community members. Forums such as Question of the Day, The Honey Pit, and The Angel Lounge offer Questions of the Day to stimulate conversation. It’s always interesting to read the replies and see who shares your interests. The Simple Habit Challenge is a great way to build habits and build friends. Not only are these active forums, but when you’re active and post in these forums, it goes toward your weekly Forum awards.
Contests are another great way to make friends, help improve your writing skills, and build community. Every contest has a different prompt. I like the Daily Flash Fiction and Writer’s Cramp because these contests test your skills to write quickly. I like to go here and review stories that have been entered when I have some spare time. There are contests that focus on building poetry skills, and the official WDC contests rotate each month, focusing a different skill set.
I also like to hang out on the Newsfeed as well. The newsfeed has some great short topics along with links to updates in the forums and contests. I’ve gotten to know several community members better just by interacting with their newsfeed topics.
I’ve listed several forums and contests that are helpful in building community here on Writing.com. If you have an opportunity try one that’s new for you. You just might enjoy it.

Feedback from my last Contest & Activities NL Dated 4 MAR 2026:

I'll be honest, I'm a little disappointed with the editor's picks, as they do not include any current contests for the writers to participate in. The link for writing contests @ writing .com - does not get the traffic it should, as posts are still there from Sept of 2025, the rest appear to be a regular monthly, so they don't remove the old, they just change the header or description on their original item that translates changes and still appears old on the listing. If you go to the community tab and click on contests, it links directly to the forum you mentioned in the newsletter. If you choose by Genre, there is an odd contest, but it is more contest entries. For new or old members, it seems the only place to find out about new contests is in the newsfeed, but if they don't regularly go to the newsfeed, they would not know either. I think it would be nice to see a list of current contests and activities in the newsletter not just activities. On a more positive note, your reference to many different activities and what they are and how they were very good.
