Summer naturally creates situations that bring characters together. School is out. Families travel. Festivals, beaches, fairs, and outdoor events fill the calendar. Characters have more opportunities to leave their routines behind and meet someone unexpected.
Summer also symbolizes change. Just as seasons shift, characters can grow, take risks, and discover new parts of themselves.
Create a Memorable Setting
A strong summer setting can become almost like a character in your story. Consider locations such as:
A small beach town
A lakeside campground
A county fair
A summer camp
A boardwalk filled with games and attractions
A family cabin in the woods
A tropical vacation destination
Use sensory details. Let readers feel the warmth of the sun, smell sunscreen and saltwater, hear waves crashing, or taste melting ice cream on a hot afternoon.
Build Romantic Opportunities
Summer offers countless chances for romance:
Bonfires on the beach
Fireworks displays
Road trips
Outdoor concerts
Carnival rides
Swimming lessons
Hiking adventures
Stargazing nights
These events naturally encourage conversation, vulnerability, and connection.
Add Conflict
Even the sweetest romance needs obstacles. Consider:
Summer ending too soon
Long distance relationships
Family expectations
Competing dreams and goals
Old heartbreaks
Vacation romances facing reality
Conflict creates emotional investment and makes the eventual payoff more satisfying.
Capture the Feeling of First Love
Many beloved summer romances focus on first love because summer itself feels temporary and precious. Encourage readers to experience every emotional high and low alongside your characters.
Focus on the small moments:
Holding hands for the first time
Sharing secrets under the stars
A nervous first kiss
Dancing barefoot at a summer festival
These moments often stay with readers long after the story ends.
Don't Forget the Supporting Cast
Friends, siblings, coworkers, and quirky locals can make a summer romance feel alive. A lively supporting cast adds humor, wisdom, and complications that enrich the main relationship.
A line taken from a previous newsletter: In real life, relationships are shaped by community, history, and outside pressure, and your story should reflect that.
End with Change
The best summer love stories leave characters transformed. Whether the couple stays together or parts ways, the experience should change them in meaningful ways.
Ask yourself: How are my characters different at the end of summer than they were at the beginning?
If you can answer that question, you're already on your way to writing a memorable summer romance.
Above all else, have fun; if you aren't enjoying it'll show in your work.
