Letter from the editor
Welcome, Newbies!

If you’re just settling into Writing.com, you’re probably excited to start creating, sharing, and polishing your writing.

This newsletter is your friendly guide to two of the most important parts of your Writing.com journey: Creating Basics and Using the Editor.

Whether you’re uploading your very first poem or crafting a multi‑chapter novel, these tools will help you get comfortable, confident, and ready to shine.

CREATING BASICS

Adding Your Writing

Every item you create begins in your Portfolio. When you click Add Item, you’ll choose the type of writing you want to create—story, poem, essay, script, or something else entirely. Once you select your category, you’ll be taken to the item creation page where the real fun begins.

Drag and Drop from a Word Processor

If you already have your writing saved on your computer, you can simply drag the file into the upload area. Writing.com will pull the text in for you. This is especially handy for longer works or pieces you’ve already polished offline.

Copy and Paste from Your Computer

Prefer to copy and paste? That works too. Just open your document, highlight the text, copy it, and paste it directly into the Editor. This method is great for quick uploads or shorter pieces.

Basic Item Settings

Before saving your item, you’ll set a few important details: The Title, next your Category, then Genre, the Summary and lastly, the Keywords. These help readers find your work and understand what they’re about to enjoy. Think of these settings as the “front cover” of your writing.

Content Ratings

Writing.com uses a rating system to help keep the community safe and comfortable. You’ll choose a rating based on the maturity level of your content. Be honest and thoughtful here—accurate ratings help readers trust you and help your writing reach the right audience.

Cover Images

You can upload a cover image to give your item personality. It might be a photo, artwork, or a simple graphic that reflects your theme. Covers aren’t required, but they make your portfolio look polished and inviting.

Saving Your Item

Once your writing and settings are ready, hit Save. You can save as a draft if you’re still working or publish it when you’re ready for readers. Don’t worry—you can always edit later.

Editing Your Item

After saving, you can return to your item anytime to revise, update, or expand it. The Edit button is your best friend.

Writing is a living process, and Writing.com makes it easy to grow your work over time.

Extra Tools

As you explore, you’ll notice additional tools such as:

Spellcheck , Thesaurus , Word count, and Formatting helpers are here to help.

These tools support your creativity and help you polish your writing without leaving the site.

Premium Features

Some features—like advanced stats, expanded storage, or enhanced formatting—are available through paid memberships.

You don’t need them to enjoy Writing.com, but they can be helpful if you plan to write frequently or want deeper analytics.

USING THE EDITOR

The Writing.com Editor is where your words come to life. It’s designed to be simple enough for beginners but powerful enough for seasoned writers.

The Editor Toolbar

At the top of the Editor, you’ll see a row of icons. These let you: Bold, italicize, or

underline text. You can change alignment, then Add lists, insert links, or add images or media to your writing or adjust headings and styles.

Think of the toolbar as your creative toolbox.

Formatting Your Writing

Good formatting helps your writing read smoothly. You can: Break paragraph Add section headers or use italics for emphasis.

Create lists for clarity

Formatting isn’t just decoration—it helps guide your reader through your ideas.

Tagging Members, Items, and More

You can tag other members or items using the @ symbol. This is useful when referencing someone’s work, thanking a reviewer, or linking related pieces.

Tagging builds community and helps readers explore connected content.

Adding Emoticons

Sometimes a little expression goes a long way. The Editor includes a selection of emoticons you can add to your writing, forum posts, or notes.

They’re fun, friendly, and help convey tone.

Adding GIFs

If you want to add a bit of motion or humor, you can insert GIFs directly from the Editor. They’re great for blog posts, announcements, or playful updates. Just be sure they fit the tone of your writing.

Using Snippets

Snippets are reusable pieces of text you can save and insert into any item. They’re perfect for:

Author notes Disclaimers Repeated introductions Series summaries If you write a lot,

snippets save time and keep your voice consistent.

Creative Tools

The Editor includes creative tools like: Random prompts, Idea generators, and Writing challenges. These are wonderful for breaking writer’s block or warming up before a big project.

Switching to Code View

If you’re comfortable with HTML, you can switch to Code View to fine‑tune your formatting. This is optional, but it gives you full control over how your writing appears.

Editor Status Bar

At the bottom of the Editor, you’ll find the status bar. It shows: Cursor position, your paragraph

structure and the formatting details. It’s a small feature, but helpful when editing long or complex pieces.

Word and Character Count

The Editor tracks your word and character count in real time. This is especially useful for contests, challenges, or writing goals with specific limits.

Preview

Before publishing, use the Preview button to see exactly how your writing will appear to readers.

This is your chance to catch spacing issues, formatting quirks, or typos before your work goes live.

A Final Welcome

Creating and editing on Writing.com is meant to be joyful, intuitive, and empowering.

Every tool you explore helps you grow as a writer and connect with others who love storytelling just as much as you do.

So, I hope you enjoy this edition of the Noticing Newbie's newsletter and hopefully there is something here to help you in your writing travels. I definitely read a few things that I was fuzzy on in going back to basics. It's very true you're never too old to learn or use something new.
