Welcome to this issue of the Noticing Newbies newsletter. Join me as I take you into some nooks and crannies of Writing.Com that you may not have found time to check out yet.
Don't forget to toss me a note about what you liked or didn't like in my column, or about a topic you'd like to see discussed. This newsletter is about and for you. And for you seasoned members, I hope you'll find something you can take from my ramblings.

Last month I celebrated my 18th year as a member of Writing.Com. That represents one-quarter of my life. And I've truly enjoyed all my time here, celebrating all the stories and poems I've written, the contests and awards I've won, and the great friends I've met here and in real life. God-willing, I hope to spend another 18 years here.
This month represents another milestone for me here--15 years ago this month I wrote my first official newsletter: a Noticing Newbies newsletter on the subject "Writing.Com 101: Help Yourself" . This year marks a serious upgrade to the WDC Reference Guide that has helped so many members navigate the numerous features of WDC over those 15 years.
And over those 15 years, I've written 185 newsletters with 87% of those on the subject of Noticing Newbies. The remaining 23 newsletters cover ten of the 13 official NLs, leaving only two topics I've yet to address. This issue marks the 1125th issue of the Noticing Newbies newsletter since it's inception on 12 February, 2003.
For the newbies reading this, only Moderators and above write the official newsletters for the site. If you haven't discovered these newsletters, you can find them listed under the Community tab in the Navigation menu on the left side of each page. I encourage you to take some time to read them. Seldom do I fail to take away some nugget I can use to help my writing.
Clicking on Newsletters under Community will display several links, including the WDC Newsletter Archives and the ability to manage your newsletter subscription. Newsletters are free to members and any you select will show up via email every Wednesday.
As for milestones, celebrate your writing victories. If you just joined, such victories may be small. Write down your goals, and check them off as you achieve them. Perhaps your ultimate writing goal is publication. What steps do you need to reach that goal? Will you need help from a member? Is entering and winning a WDC contest a step toward that goal?
Celebrate each step to maintain your focus. Eighteen years in and I still track my writing goals. Start today, and you won't be sorry.

From Mousethyme : I just remember looking up writing sites and WdC was one of the first ones to come up. I had a free membership for about two months before I sprung for a basic. After three months of that I was gifted an Upgraded membership and I've done my best not to go back.

From Jack Dietz  : One of the best ways to improve one's writing is to read different points of view on various topics. While I haven't often visited this site in a while. I appreciate the e-mails that remind me. It is very helpful.
From Dave's trying to catch up  : A supplemental reference in an online poetry workshop pointed me in this direction.
From TheBusmanPoet  : I joined to try to see and try different styles. I settled on the few I enjoyed doing. Before joining all I could do was a rhyme structure. Anything else was alien to me.
Since I joined, I'm up to six different structured styles of poetry. I learned a bit more about punctuation which was always a weak area. So, even though I'm not formerly educated in literature as many are here, I'm happy where I'm at as an amateur. And basically, as long as you're happy with where you are, that's all that matters. 
I joined to write short stories and essays. I never dreamed I'd begin writing poetry as well.
From Inkly Ascension : I was here in 2017, and i loved the community and infrastructure. I learned a lot and made good friends. Then I entered adult life and got way too busy, but lately I've been wanting a writer community again, so I came to the best place for it ❤️✒️
From Brittany L. Engels  : The first time around (more than a decade ago), I joined because it looked like a site with lots to do, and the potential to get feedback. The second time (much more recently) I came back because this was the site that helped me the most, all those years ago. It's still a wonderful community  .
Welcome back to your both.
From JL Richter : When I originally joined back in 2004, I hadn't been part of a writing community outside my college classes. I hadn't really shared my work, or been inspired to write more. This community took me in, gave me feedback, and fueled my creativity.
Then I discovered NaNoWriMo in 2007, and I deleted my portfolio and all my works (though I kept a hard copy of everything I'd written during my time with WDC), having found a more interactive and in-person community to bond with.
Fast forward nearly twenty years ... and NaNoWriMo is no more; and my writing has ... well, suffered isn't the right word, but my community -my support- diminished in its wake.
So I've returned to my writing community roots. I celebrated my One Year WDC Anniversary just a couple days ago; and while my pieces are fewer and further between, the community remains the same. The same two contests that I originally started participating in 20 years ago are still running strong, and I submit to them whenever the Muse strikes. The Angels who have gifted me with upgraded memberships in the past continue to do so now in my present. And those followers -faithful readers of my work- are still around to review my latest and not-so-greatest works.
Thank you WDC, for the introduction and the continued support and all the hope for my writing future.
