Writing contests are one thing but we can also find inspiration by the different types of contests or competitions available around us. This might involve things like sports but include other activities, which includes cooking. |
I have to admit that I love watching food show competitions. I don't always understand why people compete or how they come up with the shows but they are entertaining. Chopped has always been one of my favorites along with Cupcake Wars. They are so many options to watch too. I've been watching a bunch of the ones hosted by Guy Fieri while spending my time at home healing. Mostly Tournament of Champions because I like some of the chefs. There is a strong female presence in that competition and they also gave back during Covid with money to other restaurants in need, which is cool. In fact, many of the food competitions will do rounds where the prize is money that gets donated. Other shows include: Top Chef, Next Iron Chef, Worst Cooks in America, versions of the shows where children compete, Guy's Grocery Games, Beat Bobby Flay and Cake Wars.
While these are fun to watch, it's not something I could ever do. Well, it would be fun to do a little cupcake wars with friends or do a personal version of chopped at home. But I could never go on those shows. I have never wanted to cook at the level of chef. Or even line cook. But I do appreciate everyone who does those jobs.
My goal is to learn how to cook like a grandmother. Like my grandma's and great grandma have been able to do. They all cook well but in different ways with different types of food. I'm hoping to be a combination of the mix with a variety of options that range from nice dinners to baked goods. I have a litle trouble with timing different items for meals so they are ready at the same time along with making sauces but I'm getting better.
Now, what does this have to do with writing?
These shows can work as inspiration as one option. There also have been food related rounds in different contests and activities that include the way we can write food. That is in the form of a recipe. Some competitions have involved writing a recipe or instructions on how to do an activity that was also followed by writing a little story. For this month (August 2026) there is also a round at "The Bard's Hall Contest" [13+] that includes a recipe, picture and small writing. This is going to be a fun round.
Another option, instead of a contest, is to use the inspiration for a blog post. A blog, even if the topic isn't meant to be about food, can be a good spot to talk about some type of great thing you found in a restaurant. You can write about a crazy round in a competition or even your favorite chef. But a recipe is also a good item to write. Other people might be interested and it's fun to find recipes online to try out.
What is your favorite recipe? Does your character have a recipe? Do they even know how to cook? Many options exist with this for inspiration and people do have a strong focus on food for a number of natural and sometimes maddening reasons. This can make for a good writing option and I hope to see other people sharing interesting and homemade food here, whether it's for competition or just in a blog post.
