Sweet Sorrow

"Goodbye." A very simple word -
a sad, parting refrain.
Yet time has healed and now has blurred
the memory of pain.

If I'd of had a crystal ball
to see what lay ahead,
could I have done things differently
to leave the words unsaid?

The past is past and can't be changed
except within my mind.
The hurt and anger fades away;
only love is left behind.

The small things that we shared back then
are precious now, with time.
The broken heart you left behind
no longer seems a crime.

The times we shared, as I look back,
have been my sweetest sorrow.
I cannot trade those yesterdays
for a promise of tomorrow.
