A Journal to impart knowledge and facts

July 22, 2015

I'm going to start today to record on a daily basis whatever happens to strike my fancy. So, it is a very cool breezy day. I just posted 5 short book reviews to The Monthly Reading Challenge. I'm suppose to put away some winter wood today from the woodpile outside but I'm playing hookey from work to write so starting this blog will get done.

I'm having a daily fight with a flock of English Sparrows that are trying to take over my barn. They are making a terrible mess so they have to go. I have destroyed several nests so far they don't leave but they get out of the barn when I am around. I'm just starting the fight so I guess I don't know how far I have to go to discourage them.

I'm trying not to spread myself to thin on WDC because I find so many things that are interesting here and I am trying to work on a new story. I really enjoy sitting at my desk with a cup of tea and reading blogs on WDC.

What is your favorite Halloween memory

Congratulations on your virtual blogging adventure! Hi to October and goodbye to September. The last 6 months have flown by so quickly I'm still living mentally in the last days of one month while the date is two or three days into the new month.

One Halloween, I don't know what age I was. Let's guess around 12. My dad came home from work and said our family had been offered to visit another family on an adjacent road. After evening barn chores, we piled into the truck and drove to the family's home. They had a lot of children who were going to go trick or treating down the road. I can tell you now, this was somewhat of an adventure not bound to achieve much in the way of treats. Because the homes were a quarter of a mile apart or even a mile apart and there were only two or three homes on the road at that time.

One home about a mile away had telephoned and said they had a sack of candy for the children if someone would come to pick it up. The oldest boy in the crowd of about 15 children said he would go. Immediately, there was a chorus of me too.

After a consultation of the adults a flashlight was handed over and permission given with children under 5 ostracized from the group. So, about 10 to 15 children from 3 or so families set out down the blacktopped road to retrieve a bag of candy.
What I remember most is the crisp night air, and the darkness with a clear star filled sky above. We stopped at 2 other homes which were not giving up Halloween candy. The children chattered and told stories about how we should trick people who could not possibly have expected a crowd of children to ask for candy on this rural back road. The oldest child and apparently wisest vetoed the bolder children reminding them of the bag of candy waiting at the last house.

As for me, I was even then an introvert who came along for the company and the fun of being part of the crowd. I listened to the chatter around me, enjoyed the chill and adventure.

We reached the house where a man was waiting and watching. He stepped out his door and tossed two bags of candy suckers and tootsie rolls to the leader of the group.

"Make sure everyone gets some," he yelled. The screen door slapped shut behind him as he reentered his home. We turned around and trudged back up the hill. When we arrived back the candy was split up, which did not mean much for the large group, something was better than nothing.

The adults were done visiting. We returned to our vehicles and home was only a few minutes away. After the walk I was frozen and glad to go snuggle under blankets and sleep thinking and maybe dreaming of the star filled sky experience of the evening.

Because we were rural Halloween was never a big deal. The biggest parties I ever went to were school room celebrations in grade school. After grade school, Halloween was pretty much just another holiday on the calendar.

The End {e:🌊}

Prompt “Attitude is a choice. Happiness is a choice. Optimism is a choice. Kindness is a choice. Giving is a choice. Respect is a choice. Whatever choice you make makes you. Choose wisely.” ― Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart

Congratulations on your virtual blogging adventure! Hi.

Has anyone noticed the leaves on the trees? Generally, we have autumn colors in October and bare trees by the end of October. Many of the trees are bare here already. When we grocery shopped last week, I noticed South of us by 25 miles there are 3 parts to the forests. Green, fall colors, and bare trees.
My question, what does this mean for winter?

Roy T. Bennett had a good thought here. In the atmosphere being pushed in the USA, someone is trying to usher the public into thinking of violence. Our parents and grandparents did not want to join the war, which was deepening into WWII. Eventually, the country did join the war. Somewhere between 416 and 418 thousand deaths were attributed to that war. What we don't see is the way loss of family members to any kind of war affects relationships and living conditions of families.

At another time in this country, I read an article that said, the people in the USA were too complacent. Not enough people were voting; not enough people were willing to speak up about different problems that were facing the country. There were people who suggested our willingness to remain peaceful was a sign the country was in error, and of course suggestions were made on how to wake up the public. It was at this time when I discovered in historical readings, that making a martyr of someone could start a war.

What I really think is when people do not want war, when people are happily living in a peaceful way, it shows that their political system works. Organization, laws that meet the needs of the people, systems of help, when a family is in need. Those are the proper way to treat a large public. If you look at the school shootings, you find people who did not get help when it was needed. Sometimes people were unaware that the shooters needed help.

The violence did not work either; it just made more problems for someone in their everyday life.

What I see now is a few people making a loud noise about starting wars, the majority of populations in many different countries don't want. I did say majorities.

People do things they should not do. It is the way we approach the solution to problems that make life livable.

Prompt: Have you watched the show? Which one of this commentators (journalists) did you enjoy the most? If you haven't seen the show tell us about your favorite news source.

Congratulations on your virtual blogging adventure! HI! Remember me I'm the one who pops up every once in a while.

Yes. I have watched 60 Minutes many times. I like the in-depth coverage of each subject they review.

I don't have a specific journalist, that I can say I enjoy more, than any other.

I enjoy their person-to-person interviews. It is a good way to see how people are reacting to the coverage of the story in progress.

As a news program 60 Minutes coverage often expands on stories offering specific facts regular news does not take time to tell the public.

The program often has the answer to news items the public is not aware needed coverage. This type of program kind of steps into the place of print journalism. A way to keep current with almost any variety of news.

Another of my favorite news sources is PBS News Hour. They also do person to person interviews and panel discussions, that pinpoint the different sides of politics and news items.

Congratulations on your virtual blogging adventure!

I should not even be here. Getting ready for low temperatures. Spent the day bringing in houseplants from the balcony. Too tired to move and might say anything, but will attempt to stay accurate as I know the information to be.

About Google: I have always used Google since college because they will answer any questions and get information about anything without prejudice. And, upon researching their information, I find them to be accurate.

Also, I switched my phone to Goggle some time ago, and they are giving me the best service I have ever experienced since I received a cell phone. I never researched any background information about the company. I guess I just trust the service I have received over the years and appreciate Google.

Prompt: What surprises have you discovered about your ancestors?

Merit Badge in BCoF 2
[Click For More Info]

Congratulations on your virtual blogging adventure! HI.

I guess surprises is not the word I would use. Very little surprises me. I have not verified it, but I am thinking some of my relatives were catholic at one time. Now claim to be protestant. I also found out ancestors were involved in shipping from an island off the British coast. There was a partial name change when they moved to the new world. (what is now the USA). There are some good family stories. Maybe true maybe not. I would like to know more about European family members on both sides of my family. Some members of the family claim only one-sided history. I like family stories of years gone by. I bet they were all interesting people with interesting lives.

Bye for now.

It is said, the English language is very difficult to learn because of all the commonly spelled words there are. Do you agree or disagree? How many words can you think of that you think are easily confusing? And words that you think are commonly misspelled? Do you find yourself checking to be sure when you're writing or let spell check find them?

Congratulations on your virtual blogging adventure! Hi.

I disagree. One of the classes I liked the most in my senior year in High School was English. Lots of words have to be used correctly, no matter what language you are using. Each word has its' own meaning.

Here are some sound alike words: here and hear, to-two-too, then-than, won or one. Each word has its' own use.

I like spell check. Even if you use spell check or the program, that follows you as you type, you have to know if the corrections make sense, with the way the word was used. I try to correct as I write, because it makes editing easier for me. I keep a handy English grammar book close, because I tend to punctuate the way I think, which does not always follow some rule, that a reviewer wants to see, in written works.

It is my phone typing that can be aggravating, the spellcheck on it will literally change words if it does not understand the context of the conversation. Or change a sentence and write something I did not say? Or write something that has no meaning within the conversation. I always blame AI. *Laugh*

Bye for now.

Do you like to do word puzzles? What kind?

Congratulations on your virtual blogging adventure! Hi.

Yes, I do. I worked on some different ones on my kindle for a couple years. I don't presently have any now. Now, I'm doing real puzzles. Both kinds take my mind off whatever I need to dump out of my mind for a few minutes or hours. Word connect, word search, word brain 1&2, word challenge. Also, like mahjong. Now there is something on my kindle called Brain Challenge which has different categories including math.

Really busy now trying to write more and getting things done for winter. I expect a cold heavy winter this year. Hope I'm wrong.

Hay is almost in for the year too. I only watched this year.

Keep on keepin on.

Congratulations on your virtual blogging adventure! Hi!

Yes! I read the whole series. It was well written. It held my interest from beginning to end. I was disturbed by the focus. The focus was for the bad guy to always win. I think it is imperative, that the good guys should win. At least the majority of the time. I'm stuck in a systematic belief, that the good guys build, the bad guys tear down.

Then, as I watched and saw, how popular this was, I wondered how it was going to affect society in the USA. I did not consider how it might affect society on the whole earth?

Evil vs. right is always there in every society. For every action there is a question about what that action will accomplish? Good or bad results come from each pulse of motion.

What people write may support the outcome of some thought or action put into motion. What people write may come from actions already in motion on the earth. I guess I felt undefined fear, when I read the series. Then, I saw how much publicity was attached to the series and how many people wanted to see it or read it. The fear persists.

I guess this is what sociologists' study. The outcome of actions on society. What kind of personalities are affected by the thought, that the bad guys always win?

I also think a lot about how to stop all war on the earth. So many people die defending freedom to think, write, and produce good actions.

How will, "on earth as it is in heaven," be produced?

Prompt: Secrets
What do you think about secrets and keeping secrets? If a secret would be against your morals or beliefs or if it was about hurting someone or a group of people, would you still keep it?

I believe that openness and truth clear sin. If I knew it was a secret and keeping it would not endanger people, I might keep it. This would be necessary for a judgement call concerning what would happen if it were told. This is such a prompt without specifics. Christmas gifts or birthday presents are one kind of secret. Murder and mayhem are another kind of secret. Whether I would keep it or not just depends on the secret. On another point of view, I am prepared for people to tell anything they know about me, as well as how they know it. How you get to know information may be firsthand or gossip. If you know a secret analyze. How did you get to know the secret, how are people being hurt by the secret, should you talk to the subject of the secret.

I find that most people never actually get to the heart of anything that is being passed around about an individual. Because there is no actual person to person discussion by individuals actually involved in situations. The USA has so many brotherhoods and sisterhoods and trouble is made for a lot of innocent people.
