Meg and Dave go to a come-as-you-are housewarming party. 300 words.

Wardrobe Malfunction

“Are you going to wear that?” Meg asked Dave.

“It’s clean!”

“There are holes in that shirt and most of the buttons are missing.”

“They said come as you are!”

“Those pants are older than our marriage,” Meg continued like she was doing inventory.

“I love these pants! They’re just the right length; no bulky hems. The torn fabric is a fashion statement.”

Meg shook her head and held out her hand.

“Let me even those do-it-yourself hems with pinking shears. I’d rather you didn’t shed over their house!”

“This is how I am, and that’s what the invitation to the housewarming said,” Dave said stubbornly.

Seeing he wasn’t about to yield; Meg cut some holes in her tank top and crop pants.

“What do you think? Beach comber chic?”

Dave laughed.

“Now that’s what I call fashion!”

Linking arms, they sashayed out the door which automatically locked behind them. The party was hilarious, and the food was fantastic. Long after midnight, Dave and Meg got home.

“Where’s the key?” they both said. Meg had no purse and Dave’s outfit had no pockets.

“Now what?”

“Guess we’ll have to break in.”

“You’ll cut yourself!”

“I’ll get the car blanket.”

When he came back, he wrapped his hand and punched in a window. After he did, Meg reached in and undid the lock.

They stepped over the glass and went straight to bed. Pounding on the door woke them.

“Police! Open the door!”

Throwing on the clothes they’d worn to the party, Dave and Meg did as they were told.

“You two live here? You look like a couple of vagrants,” one cop said.

“Come as you are party, is all.”

“Identification?”

“Not on us, we were sleeping.”

“Let’s go. A night in the station should clear your mind.”
