Flash Fiction

That Walk

Walking down the street, I’d seen every house, every yard, I walk on this street daily. Unfortunately, it’s boring. The doctor was very explicit when she told me I had to exercise more… The easiest was walking, but every day, the same old same old? I should have driven to the park, but then I would miss that TV show I really liked. Bad timing on my part today. But I brought the book I’d been reading. It was a quiet street; I could walk and read! I’ve done it before, many times.

My current book was a mystery with a very tricky get away by the sneaky bad guy. Right up my favorite alley! So, I pulled it out. I admit, I was way more interested in the book than the walk.

I had just gotten to a pretty juicy spot when suddenly a horn honked scaring the crap out of me! Then I realized I was crossing a street with my nose in the book! And, a car was right there! I had to jump back! A very angry guy rolled down his window and yelled at me! “Watch where you’re going lady!!

I was shocked! Not by the car, or the book business, the guy was David Abbot!! We went to school together! I’d had a crush on him from sixth grade on! I recognized him immediately! He never knew (or didn’t choose to know…) about my crush, and here we were, in a completely different town from where we grew up, in our seventies! Meeting again!

“David Abbot?” I said, excited!

“No” he said, “And you better start watching where you’re going!” Off he drove.

Well, it was a lovely memory, and I laughed all the way home! It was my best walk ever!
