The world's largest telescope is the M6-B12, commonly called "Galax-enormous." And the job of keeping the lens clean is the most tedious task I've ever undertaken.
Much of the time it needs little maintenance, because the sliding cover remains closed. I give it a weekly once-over with a vacuum hose, to clear the spider webs. (They can get through the slightest crack.)
But once a month I go through a gallon of window cleaner, and spend several hours wiping it off.
And you should see my windows at home. Actually, you can see them, but you can't see through them.
