Happiness Is an Inside Job

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Merry Christmas.

Welcome to my essay.

Just now I was standing on the terrace of my house after a simple yet delicious lunch of chicken stew. As I stood there, gratefully soaking in the abundant sunshine, it came to me that ‘I am happy.’

‘Why?’ I asked myself.

And when I looked all around me, I found the reason: the whole of Nature was bathed in a lovely harmony. The mellow sun, the blue sky, the flock of pigeons happily circling the sky, huge trees with shining leaves, lovely blossoms of Bougainvillea... all came together into a perfect unity.

Especially noticeable was one tiny bird, perched at the very top of a gigantic tree (maybe eight to nine stories tall), merrily sunning itself.

As I took in all this beauty in a wide-angle sweep, I felt myself to be a part of this amazing unity, too. Yes! It came to me all of a sudden: “Aha! I am a part of this whole as well.”

This, in my humble belief, is happiness.
