A young English lady is betrayed by her lover, left for dead at a wharf, and accidentally taken aboard a ship. She navigates an affair with the captain and has a baby. She is injured in a fight about the baby, and her memory is lost; the captain of the ship is lost, so is never brought to justice. The young woman is treated well as sea widow in the town, but her father knows better, and he continues to yearn for retribution against the dead captain.
