Summary of this Book...
Casey Watson is a foster mom who has a son with Asperger's Syndrome. But she still opens her home to children in need. Casey is patient, compassionate, and resilient in her challenging role as a foster mom.

The story she's sharing is about taking in two nine-year-old boys. One is Jensen, who has learned to care for himself after being left at home a lot by himself. The last time was when he was left for several days, while his mom took a little mini vacation with her new boyfriend. The other, Georgie, has Autism and has been institutionalized for most of his life. Casey needs to learn to care for the needs of both boys at the same time, as well as their individual traumas and the rocky relationship between the two.

Even with the love she has for the children, she doesn't try to sugarcoat the difficulties. There are times when no matter how hard she tries, things still feel like they're falling apart. But throughout the chaos of tantrums and meltdowns, there are the feel-good breakthroughs and victories that will melt your heart.

It shows us how difficult caring for the kids can be, but also how important and rewarding it can be. But mostly, it shows how badly children need others to actually listen to them and how important it is for their story to be told. The children—all children—need to know that they're treasured and valuable.

These abused and neglected children must be given a safe place with love, empathy, understanding, and consistency, so they can start to mend and heal.
This type of Book is good for...
The realities of foster care, child psychology, and social work
I especially liked...
The relationship and compassion she had with the children
I didn't like...
I wish it had focused more on the systemic problems within the chain of custody. Including social worker burnout, not enough adequate care, including downright abuse and neglect in some foster homes, underfunding, etc...
The author of this Book...
Casey Watson, who writes under a pseudonym, is a specialist foster carer. She and her husband, Mike, look after children who are particularly troubled or damaged by their past.

Before becoming a foster carer Casey was a behaviour manager for her local comprehensive school. It was through working with these ‘difficult’ children – removed from mainstream classes for various reasons – that the idea for her future career was born.

Casey is married with two children and three grandchildren.
