I’m happy to report that the second book in The Knack series was even better than the first one–I read this immediately after book one, and found it satisfying in both plot and characters. The story’s pace stays pretty fast with emotions churning and dangers lurking. Rowan ventures more deeply into the past–revealing long-kept secrets about the attack that put the prince in a coma and took the princess's hand. She and her childhood friend plot to overthrow the regent to slow the escalating dangers of Thera, the energy source that's being pushed by the regent and council for profit–despite the horrifying things that happen to people who work with Thera or are addicted to it. While Rowan deals with the city's troubles, Conall travels north to meet with the Dark Elf who lured him with information about the fate of his brother. Both Rowan and Conall face down the demons of the past and are rewarded with insights into the true danger of what’s coming, giving them both the courage to step up and make a stand.

There are fun twists and more explanation of mech-tech, Harry Hightower, and the saints and gods. It’s a fun romp that includes some desperate situations filled with suspense.
