My writing blog
I don't have a muse, and never have. I'm afraid that if I did have one, she would be a small Chinese woman standing in the doorway, looking significantly at her watch every minute or so while I dug around in the sofa searching for enough loose change to pay for the chicken-fried rice. On the whole, I think I do better without her.

Magazine: The Drabbler

A "drabble" is a very short story containing exactly 100 words...no more, no less. Its title is limited to 15 words, no more. And it is a story. Like any story, it requires correct spelling, grammar, a beginning, a denouement . . . it's a story.

To Reach the Liquid Sky - 100 word story on the theme, Alien Architecture, scheduled for Drabble #16 in mid-March

Humility reminder: Written for this magazine, so never submitted elsewhere.

Current status: 63 items in 75 submissions. Three new markets attempted, Boston Review, Missouri Review and Rio Grande Review. One market re-tried, Pedestal Magazine

Slowly, slowy recovering from my cold, but in the meantime I finished my four-part "Sci-Fi Religious Noir" story for The First Line  . Kind of intriguing challenge actually. The basic idea is that they give a first line (which you have to use exactly as is), and you write a story. The real challenge comes if you choose to try a four part story, as I did. (Don't bother now, as it was due today.) If they accept it (and they are a tough market, so it is not a given at all), they will use the first part in their Spring issue, second in the Summer issue and so on. The first lines (and thus the beginning of each "part" or chapter) are:

Spring: Working for God is never easy.
Summer: Paul and Miriam Kaufman met the old-fashioned way.
Fall: Three thousand habitable planets in the known universe, and I'm stuck on the only one without ______________. [Fill in the blank.]
Winter: Until I stumbled across an article about him in the paper, I never realized how much Walter Dodge and I are alike.

Sure makes for an interesting story. Mine is called Judd Falcon, Missionary to the Stars, but I can't share it with people because it is up for publication. Of course, if they accept it, you can see it in the magazine.

You can now submit for the Summer issue, of course, but not a four parter.

Current status: 64 items in 75 submissions. Three new markets attempted, flashquake, Tin House, Annalemma, Breadcrumb Scabs: a poetry magazine and, of course, The First Line

I'm back from sunny Florida, but I came back to a sick wife and a sick son who both insisted on breathing while in the house. Inevitably, I am now sick. Just a bad cold, but I am no fun when I am sick. At dinner, my wife suggested that I be quarantined to my office. I guess it will at least give me time to finish my "Sci-Fi Religious Noir" story.

Current status: 63 items in 73 submissions. Three new markets attempted, StoryQuarterly, Dante's Heart: Myth, Fairytale, Folklore & Fantasy (if anybody takes my Thor and Loki in Jutenheim, it may be them) and Short-Story.Me (i.e., a very challenging print/online market, an unknown online market and a fledgling online market)

Magazine: 50 to 1

We are looking for two things: 50 word stories and first lines (do not send whole stories - they will unfortunately go unread and will not be considered for publication).

The Trouble with Turtles - 50 word story, slightly dark humor, up now at Link

Humility reminder: Humility? We don't need no stinkin' humility.

Magazine: The Cynic Online Magazine

That's what the Cynic is about. It's about perserverence and having a voice and giving a place, a voice for others. It's about making it in a world that's against you and no matter how much you feel like you're standing still, taking a punch in the mouth and standing tall. It's about thought, both silly and serious, and it's definitely about pushing all the wrong buttons. And it's about art and fun and getting out of the mainstream, while keeping a toe in the brook.

The Oak - Poem, Literary/Inspirational, to be published on-line Feb. 16, 2010
Just a Farmer - Poem, Literary/Humor, to be published on-line Mar. 1, 2010
May I Soon Rest in Peace - Poem, Literary/Dark, to be published on-line Mar. 16, 2010

Humility reminder: Prior to this, The Oak had been rejected once and Just a Farmer had been rejected once.

Current status: 59 items in 70 submissions. Two new markets attempted, MUSE: A Quarterly Journal and Able Muse ( I thought about submitting something to Barefoot Muse just for the fun of it, but...)

Magazine: Rotten Leaves Magazine

Rotten Leaves is a literary magazine created in 2009 by Christopher J. Dwyer and Axel Taiari, out of a strong desire to see the fiction we love published and read across the globe. We are looking for mostly dark fiction. What it means is that we are not here to read Disney-like stories, sitcoms, or your diary entry thinly disguised as a horribly vague and pseudo-deep coming of age story where nothing happens. We want fiction that will grab the reader by the guts and won’t let go. Make things happen. We want events. And events doesn’t necessarily mean big explosions. It can be internal changes or emotional earthquakes. We want originality and quality, and we want your work to be as polished and precise as possible. While the editors have a special place in their blackened hearts for noir, science-fiction, horror, and any kind of slipstream, we are always pleased to see other genres take us to new places. A line has to be drawn, though. Although we enjoy dark stories, please understand that nonsensical, shock-value violence does not interest us.

Missing You - Short Story, Dark/dialogue-only, approximately 480 words, to be included in Issue #2 in the next couple of months.

Humility reminder: Prior to this, Missing You had been rejected twice.

Current status: 58 items in 74 submissions. No new markets attempted (I am at a conference, suffering a slow death by Powerpoint for the week)

I will be at a conference for a few days in Orlando, Florida. Given the cold weather and snow we will be having, I am looking forward to the warmth, but given that my wife and son have to stay home, I am glad that their weather doesn't look too bad either.

Current status: 64 items in 81 submissions. Two new markets attempted, Mobius: The Journal of Social Change, Midwest Literary Magazine, one re-attempted, Flash Fiction Online

I Might - Poetry, Children's/YA, Heroic Couplets

Humility reminder: This was the first place I submitted I Might, so no humility required *Smile*.

Current status: 58 items in 76 submissions. One new market attempted, Alien Sloth Sex (OK, it is possible I just submitted to them because of the name, but I actually found several poems which fit their weird ethos, so what does that say about me?)

I am looking forward to seeing a few of my accepted stories and poems printed or put on-line. Acceptances are great, but a pale substitute for seeing your work out there and accessible to people. Here are a few of the accepted items I anticipate seeing:

Dog-Ear Tales goes to print in January with my story, Got It?.

Danse Macabre let me know that two of my poems, Sleepwalker and More Lysol!, will be in Danse Macabre #32 KISMET which will come out in February.

Twisted Dreams goes to print in February with my story, Lonesome no more.

Every Day Poets at least suggested that it may include my poem, Gran's Wisdom, near Valentine's Day.

Current status: 58 items in 76 submissions. Four new markets attempted, Hunger Mountain, spilled coffee, Everyday Weirdness (unrelated to the Every Day Fiction and Every Day Poets, fyi) and Hobart (Print)

Magazine: Every Day Poets

Every Day Poets is looking for short poems. There’s no such thing as too short. All genres are acceptable, and poems that don’t fit neatly into any genre are welcome too. Our readership is adult, so poems intended for children are unlikely to be accepted unless they are relevant to adults as well. On the other hand, we are not impressed by gratuitous sex and violence, or pointlessly foul language; edgy content should be necessary to the purpose of the poem and appropriate to this venue.

Gran's Wisdom - Poetry, Romance/Humor, Blank Verse

This was one of the two I mentioned as still pending. The other, The Call, was rejected. Hmm, I just noticed that the two poems accepted had such similar titles, God's Work and Gran's Wisdom. Weird.

Humility reminder: This was the first place I submitted Gran's Wisdom, so no humility required *Smile*.

Out of curiosity, I took a look at the full list of items submitted and did a bit of counting. On my list are 61 poems and 16 short stories. Breaking down those numbers, I have 12 accepted poems, 40 currently submitted at least one place and 9 not submitted anywhere currently, while I have 3 accepted stories, 12 currently submitted at least one place and 1 not submitted anywhere currently. Just FYI.

Current status: 52 items in 68 submissions. No new markets attempted (clearly sitting around on my bum *Smile*)
