My writing blog
I don't have a muse, and never have. I'm afraid that if I did have one, she would be a small Chinese woman standing in the doorway, looking significantly at her watch every minute or so while I dug around in the sofa searching for enough loose change to pay for the chicken-fried rice. On the whole, I think I do better without her.

My review of a middle grade novel by Ray Conner is up at My Comfy Chair. Fun, and a bit silly, this might be a good pick for reluctant readers, especially boys.

I wish I had kept this from the first day, but I decided to keep a min-NaNo log...

Brief recap while I still remember:
I ended Day 1 at approximately 2.5k words.
I ended Day 2 at approximately 5.5k words.
I ended Day 3 at approximately 7k words.

I ended Day 4 at 9641 words, with Bernie, Tish and Granny Mac heading into the cavern where Bernie's parents are being held captive.

I had heard good things about this book, but was frankly a little worried about reading it. Zombie erotica? It sounded like a gimmick. Besides, I am squeamish about zombies, and even more so about erotica. Still, I thought it might be good for a laugh. What I found was much, much more.

Peter is an eighteen year old boy who's never had much of a life, until he loses the one he had. His friends, who accidentally kill him, decide to bring him back to life with the help of Madam Sangrail, an absolutely wonderful character who would steal the show if Peter weren't so compelling himself. What he becomes may be undead, but he's more full of zest than ever. Part coming-of-age tale, part romance, part action comedy, this is a story I couldn't put down. Even though it is a very satisfying 232 pages long and I started it late at night, I didn't stop until I finished. More than that, I can easily see reading it again.

Good characters, good sex, good fun. This probably isn't for fans of the Romero mindless brain chompers, unless they have a sense of humor and are willing to put aside their preconceptions. I think it will have particular appeal for women, which surprised me given the title and genre, but obviously there is plenty there for men too. While there is a lot of sex, it is more like hot and steamy romance sex than anything else, and the characters are so much fun, you'll want to spend more time with them. I'm hoping for a sequel, but in the meantime am going to look for any other books by this wonderful author.

I happened to check out Orson Scott Card's Strong Verse   today, and two of my poems are up: Twisted Mister and The cozy chair that I'm not in. They were accepted in November, but just show up when they show up.

Anthology: Pill Hill Press: Daily Flashes of Erotica 2011

Daily Flashes of Erotica 2011 is an anthology of 365 flash fiction stories, each assigned a calendar day, offering adult readers an opportunity to enjoy one erotic story per day—even with a hectic schedule. Pill Hill Press is actively seeking EROTIC FLASH FICTION. We're looking for mainstream erotica—sexy, steamy, sensual & short! Nothing offensive (such as rape, incest, bestiality, any depiction of a child as a sexual object, etc.). Any setting/time period is acceptable. Most genres of speculative fiction are welcome, as long as the story has a strong erotic overtone.

The Best Little Whorehouse Above Texas - 500 word humorous semi-erotica story to be included in the print anthology.

Humility reminder: Written for this anthology, so not submitted elsewhere.

Current status: 62 items in 72 submissions. Six new markets attempted, The Medulla Review, Coach's Midnight Diner, Cezanne's Carrot, WestWard Quarterly, the Daily Bites of Flesh 2011 anthology and the Daily Flashes of Erotica 2011 anthology (already accepted). I guess with success comes enthusiasm.

Magazine: Awkward Magazine

At Awkward Press, we believe imaginative fiction shouldn’t be confined by genre limitations. There are countless worlds running parallel to ours that are worth exploring. They might look the same as our world. They might operate by the same rules. They may be filled with recognizable names and places. But inside all of these worlds is something that’s just a touch out of place. Something … awkward. In Awkward Press’s publications, we strive to showcase works by talented artists who choose to create outside the realm of traditional publishing. As the major publishing houses latch onto flavor-of-the-month trends in search of the next blockbuster, readers must turn to smaller houses to find writing that’s risky, original, and alive. And that’s what Awkward Press is all about—bringing a sense of adventure back to reading. Exploring the fringes of literature. And selling our releases for less than the cost of a movie ticket.

Hard Times in NYC - 1025 word suspense thriller story to be included in the Awkward II issue.

Humility reminder: Prior to this acceptance, Hard Times in NYC had been rejected at one other magazine.

What do you know. No acceptances for a while, then two print magazines in April.

Current status: 55 items in 63 submissions. One new market attempted, the Holidays of Horror anthology.

Magazine: Beyond Centauri

Beyond Centauri is a quarterly magazine of science fiction and fantasy for younger readers--for the next generation [ages 10 and up]. Beyond Centauri publishes short stories, poetry, art/illustrations, and articles [including book and movie reviews] in the following genres: science fiction, fantasy, and eww-gross [bugs, slimy things, creepy campfire tales]. Our writers include adults and younger writers. It is our intent at Sam's Dot to nurture imagination and creativity in the next generation. From a practical standpoint, the next generation is the readership of the future [writing is nice, but we have to have readers]. From an even more practical standpoint, if we are to be a spacefaring species, we have to open and keep open the dream of exploration, be it in space, or within ourselves. Beyond Centauri will not fulfill that purpose, nor is it intended to fulfill it. What it will do, is serve as an aid...as a vitamin tablet, if you will, to the imagination of the younger readership.

Alison's Find - 1700 word YA science fiction story to be included in the October 2010 issue.

Humility reminder: Prior to this acceptance, Alison's Find had been rejected at three different magazines.
