30 Day Blogging Challenge PROMPT for January 18, 2020

It’s Show and Tell Day here at the 30DBC! Think of an item that is special to you (it may help if you are able to see your chosen item while you write your entry). Describe it in as much detail as possible. Then, tell us its story. How did it come to be in your life and what makes it important to you?

MY ITEM

This is my item

Proudly pictured for all to see, My item.

I know what you're thinking. That's not an item that's a whole bunch of crap. An item is one thing, not a big pile of stuff. Can't you ever do anything right?

Well, to me, this is my item. I know there are several items, but they all combine to be a single item. I could actually add a few items and it would still be one item, but it wouldn't be my item if I took anything away. Know what I mean Vern?

These are the things that lend to making me the person I am. This is what brings me joy. This is how I express myself. There are only a few material items in this world I care about and these are them.

The harmonicas are probably my favorite. After a blues concert in the mid-1980s, I mentioned to my, then, wife how I wished I could play the harmonica. That Christmas she gave me a harmonica as a stocking stuffer. She gave me other gifts too, probably spent a lot of money, I couldn't even tell you what they were and I probably left them behind when we split up, but I never put that harmonica down. I bought books and lessons on cassette tape. I practiced every chance I got. I would play while driving. I would jam with a few guitar playing friends. I was horrible at it. Credit to my friends... they never discouraged me. It took about five years until one time we were playing at a campfire party a friend said to me, "Hey, you're pretty good on that thing." Seems like that was a turning point, and I don't mean to brag, but I get compliments now rather than complaints. Nobody asks me to play 'Far Far Away" anymore.

Hohner Special 20s are my favorite harmonica. They're made in Germany. When I began playing you could buy one for $20.00. Now they sell them for $80.00. They come in several keys, so I have several harmonicas. I played on one of the biggest stages in Winnipeg, *The Burton Cummings Theater. The theater was empty at the time, but I played my harmonica on the stage. (this is a good story but for another time)

The guitar is made in Canada in a small town on the east coast, the population is less than one thousand people and 400 hundred of them work building guitars at **Seagull. I won't say it's an expensive guitar, but I paid a lot more than Leslie thinks I did for it. I've always wanted to learn how to play the guitar. I made a few failed attempts in my youth and early adulthood. One afternoon almost five years ago now I saw a video ad on Facebook by Andy Guitar. Andy promised he could teach anyone how to play ten songs on the guitar in one ten minute lesson. I wanted to call bullshit on Andy. Leslie had an old classical guitar in the closet that hadn't seen the light of day since highschool. I tuned it up and took Andy's (Totally Free) Lesson, and after 10 minutes I was playing along to Buffalo Springfield's 'For What it's Worth'

I haven't quite mastered the guitar yet, and I probably never will, but I only wanted to be able to play for my own enjoyment, and I certainly do that. Once I gained confidence with the guitar I started practicing playing both harmonica and guitar together. I think I'm ready to perhaps go and entertain seniors or try busking outside the liquor store. We'll see how it goes.

The laptop is my tool for writing and web design. I don't actually do web design, but I have taken courses in web design and e-commerce.
I create ads and posters for our Lions club, and I've been known to photoshop the odd meme or two. I've made a few videos and a couple of video blog entries. I enjoy the freedom for self-expression the computer age has provided. This laptop has been crashing lately, so it may be time for a replacement.

I've always enjoyed photography. Together with a classmate in grade six, we entered the city science fair with a project titled, "What is a Camera" We made a pinhole camera out of a cardboard box, and it actually worked. We won third place in the city science fair and got an honorable mention in the provincial science fair. I enjoy taking, editing, and sharing pictures.

My current camera is a Nikon Coolpix P610 It's full HD and has a 60X zoom lens, which is huge in camera talk. I can take a photo of the full moon where you see fairly sharp definition of the creators.

If you noticed the little knitted monkey sitting on the guitar, that's part of my item too. If you don't know about my monkeys, then you haven't known me very long.

I'll leave you with some photos and videos, to enjoy, should you choose.

What is a camera?

30 Day Blogging Challenge PROMPT for January 17, 2020

Use the following words in your entry today: tumultuous, navigate, journey, and gargantuan.

I thought I would try something a little different with this prompt, by writing about these words as they relate to music.

I discovered a six-minute song by a band named, 'Tumultuous' on Youtube, so I gave it a listen. I'm not a music critic, but after 20 -30 seconds I decided a new approach to the prompt would be needed.

Minutes later I found myself watching a video compilation titled, 'The Tumultuous Relationship between Marcia Woolery & John-Boy Walton'
(I did not watch the entire video)

Nothing ventured nothing gained.

Three more words to go, and I'm looking for an out from my 'try something new' entry.

I closed Youtube and began to navigate the Writing dot com website, looking for new ideas.

The Journey through Genres contest is well promoted on the site. I'd give that contest a try, but not right now, I've got a blog entry to write.

One word to go.

I should note that the prompt doesn't say we have to use the words in sentences, just says use the words.

This revelation is big, huge, enormous, some might even say, wait for it, ... gargantuan.

Good-night John-Boy.

30 Day Blogging Challenge PROMPT for January 16, 2020

What are you waiting for?
There are so many ways to answer this question, both light and heavy, so I look forward to reading where you go with it!

This is a good question because everyone is waiting for something. It's the same as, "what do you want?" We all want something.

Does anybody remember when TV closed for the night? Like, the movie would end, the National Anthem would play, and a recorded voice would announce, "This concludes our broadcasting day."

I remember being awake early in the morning and waiting for the TV to start back up.

What if the internet kept regular business hours? (Just an example of a bad question. Feel free not to answer)

If I know that something will happen such as the TV will start back up, I'll wait patiently, I have a lot of patience.

If it's not certain whether something will happen. I have very little patience and will push the issue until I get a definitive answer.

What are you doing? Another good one. People are either doing something or they're not. Gotta answer.

Leslie is constantly asking me, "What are you doing?" She asks me this when I'm not doing anything, so my answer is always, "nothing."

What do you want me to do, I ask.

Nothing, she says.

I'm doing it! WTF!

What are you thinking about? Another one of Leslie's questions.

How I would love to say, I was just thinking about minding my own business, but I do love her, and she'd probably throw something at me.

Moving right along, here are a few things that I am waiting for.

I'm waiting for spring to arrive, the temperature is forecast to be -40 tomorrow morning.

I'm waiting for the right opportunity to buy a vintage vehicle, a 1961 Corvette, or Cadillac. Both would be nice.

Right now I'm waiting for another idea to come to mind. (This is usually the time Leslie asks me what are you thinking about?)

-40 That's fucked! lol

Is waiting and procrastinating the same thing?

Big picture thinking: I'm waiting for the world to end. I think we're close, and I know I'm going to die someday anyway, so I think it would be nice to see the end of the world.
I'm very curious about how things will play out. Will it be natural causes, climate change/global warming, all-out nuclear holocaust or as described in the book of Revelations. Either way, everybody going out at the same time kind of appeals to me.

And... what we've all been waiting for... The end.

Keep warm!

30 Day Blogging Challenge PROMPT for January 15, 2020

Write your entry today about commitment. Committing to an activity, craft, person, way of being, etc. Consider the concepts of diligence, honesty, and responsibility. What does commitment look like to you?

I'm considering a mature and responsible response to this prompt, but I'm not committed to one.

So... I've decided then. I will commit to writing a responsible, and honest blog entry. I'll be serious, and this time... I mean it.

Growing up in the sixties I was taught that if you wanted to be respected or trusted, maybe even liked you had to be able to live up to your commitments.

Nobody likes a quitter.
Nobody will trust you if you lie.

My parents' generation and generations prior were light-years more committed than that of the baby boomer generation.
People stayed married for life.
People worked the same job with the same company their entire life.
With the outbreak of world war one and two - volunteers enlisted.

People of my parents' generation were committed, and because of that, people of my generation had opportunities to live good lives.

Things sure changed in the seventies. Divorce was easy. People joked about being on their second, third, and fourth marriage.
If things weren't going your way at work - quit, and find a new job.
Companies too didn't seem to be very committed to their employees. Hundreds of thousands of employees were fired in favor of automation.
Tired of the struggle? File for bankruptcy.

Yet with all the changes going on in the world our mom still taught commitment. Whenever we wanted to join a club or play on a sports team, if we were allowed to do so, permission came with one instruction... You can't quit!

Here's a gem. Dad was a chronic alcoholic, made life miserable for us all, until his death (at age 57) due to drinking related diseases.

Almost everyone, including myself, advised my mom to get a divorce, but she outright refused. She made a commitment on her wedding day, and she was going to keep it.

At this point, as I write, I find myself in a place I wasn't intending on going to.

(I'm bailing on a blog entry about commitment)

I wanted to write something mature, intelligent, and honest, without all the trashy, embellishments I write just to get a laugh.

I didn't want to write a depressing entry. I only wanted to put something out there that showed I'm not an asshole all the time.

Well, there you go! At least you know I'm honest.

30 Day Blogging Challenge PROMPT for January 14, 2020

Write about a time when you made a wrong assumption. Did you realize your mistake right away, or did someone tell you later? What did you learn from your mistake?

Here's one just like me, quick and cute.

My family has been involved in thoroughbred horse racing for many years, it was one of my Grandfather's passions. On one occasion my brother-in-law and I decided to make a trip to the local track. (Assiniboine Downs)

We got to the track late, but I assumed we arrived on time to see the completion of the first race.

I bought a program and turned to the second race and began the process of selecting a horse to bet on. There was a horse in the second race that began to resonate with me, I thought it had a very good chance of winning this race.

Then Mr. B showed up. Mr.B is a life long horse racing fan, a family friend, and my grade 8 homeroom teacher.

(I forget the horse's name that I liked, let's say it was Quick Sand.)

Mr. B knows that I know a little bit about the sport, so he asks me, "Who do you like in this race, Spearman?" He always called us boys by our last names, it was confusing when all six of us were around.

I really think Quick Sand can win, the horse seems to outclass the rest of the field, I say.

Mr. B looks at me sideways for a second then says, What the fucks the matter with you? Quick Sand just won the second race. Jesus Christ, Spearman, you're always on the wrong page, couldn't find your homework, late, wasn't there that day." Then he shakes his head and walks away, laughing.

I assumed we missed the first race, but we missed the first two races.

Mr. B nailed me on it.

Lesson Learned - check, check, and double-check, you can never be too careful.

30 Day Blogging Challenge PROMPT for January 13, 2020

In your entry today, write about games! Board games, video games, card games, sports games, mind games, etc... Share a memorable story.

I love games, all games, I've played games for as long as I can remember. I play games every single day, sometimes all day.

I'm playing a game right now, it's called the 30 Day Blogging Challenge. The object is to write a blog entry every day for thirty days, it's a challenge and a competition, and it's fun. You can't beat fun!

I make games, anything I do can become a game. I've created some of the games we've played in the 30DBC. 50/50 blogging, 5 Day Mini Challenges, and the infamous UNOFFICIAL 30 DAY BLOGGING CHALLENGE'S ELIMINATION STYLE BLOGGING CHALLENGE FUNDRAISER, There was also the Blog Mob, as well as a couple of unique contests (coloring contest and Nascar Pool) held in *Andre the Blog Monkey's Banana Bar. There are some of these games saved in the archives of the bar-room if you'd like to check them out.

30dbcesfbc image Feb 2015

As you may know, I'm the fifth of six children in my family. By the time I came along, my siblings were already playing games, and I wanted in. We didn't have a lot of money, so games were a great gift. Mom learned that one game could entertain six kids for hours, and games are very affordable. Every Christmas we would be gifted at least one board game, and a replacement rod hockey game because we destroyed those things in short order. You can't beat fun!

Myself and one of my older brothers are game creators. If we had to sit in a room together for any length of time, we'd make up a game and start playing. Spin the Pillow, Shoe Ball, Hockey With Your Hands, Bolo Drop, Bread Bag Hacky Sack, Door Door, and a bunch of others, but these were the best of the games.

I was going to share a memorable story about the games we played growing up, but then when I mentioned the elimination-style blogging challenge I decided to write a little bit about that because most of the bloggers in this month's challenge weren't around for that, and it was EPIC!

First of all, I think it was the first time Fivesixer turned over the keys to the 30DBC to me to run an UNOFFICIAL Challenge.

I had no idea what I was going to do, but I promised Norb that I would raise some GP for the group.

So I made the posters and invited bloggers to join the UNOFFICIAL 30 DAY BLOGGING CHALLENGE'S ELIMINATION STYLE BLOGGING CHALLENGE FUNDRAISER.

I made up the name of the contest, that's all I had. People signed up for it, 26 I think.

I set the entrants up into teams and began blog prompts.. oh yeah, I got the entrants to go out and recruit more entrants.

So I had all these people blogging but then I had to think of a way to make some money (GPs)

I also had to think of a way to eliminate players, which was the hardest part, because how do you get money from an eliminated player?

So I came up with a mini-game, the game with-in the game. "You've Got A Price On Your Head"

Here's how it worked. Any team member could put a price on an opposing team member's head by paying any amount of GPs to the group.

(Thinking back, I should have put limits on this)

If a player puts a price on your head, then you have to pay an equal amount to the group or suffer elimination.

Pretty simple right.

It started out pretty tame, but then all hell broke loose, people started dropping 100,000 and 200,000 price tags. One team thought if they pooled their money and made a large enough price on a player's head they would surely eliminate a player, but the opposing team came up with the saving bounty money, then things went a bit out of control. To the point, fivesixer started to get complaints emailed to him.

We had to stop the game at this point, and I created a Final Bolgapocalypses, which went over pretty good, and at the end of the month, everybody walked away relatively unharmed.

The 30DBC raised nearly 2 million in GP.

I got to run a few more UNOFFICIAL challenge months, but none were quite as profitable as the "You've Got A Price On Your Head" game.

This clip from the Simpsons is a very accurate portrayal of how the bloggers played "You've Got A Price On Your Head"

I remember my ex-sister-in-law, who never supported my writing or any of my other creative endeavors, interrupted a conversation I was having about the elimination challenge with someone else, to ask what I was talking about. After I explained all about it she asked in a very sarcastic tone, "Oh yeah, and how many people are doing that?"

We have twenty-six people playing I said.

She just stood there with her stupid face... haha You can't beat fun!

Play the game.
Everybody play the game.

30 Day Blogging Challenge PROMPT for January 12, 2020

Describe a time when you exhibited bravery.

Howdy folks

I'll be interested to read what my writing dot com blogging friends have to say on this prompt.

Bravery is a strong word. To say someone is brave elevates that person to a higher level, we're taught to respect, look up to, and honor the brave.

Everybody is brave. Our neighbors to the south live in the home for the brave. Perhaps a bit of an exaggeration, but nobody sings a National Anthem about being cowardly.

The textbook example of bravery (I didn't research this, I'm just making shit up) is anyone who does something in spite of the fears they hold which prevents them from doing whatever it is they did in spite of their fear.

Bravery is over-coming fear in order to act. Fear is usually fear of the unknown. Children display a lot of bravery because in many cases they experience things for the first time. Facing their fear of the unknown, but going on in spite of fear = bravery.

I keep writing, but nothing's coming out.

I can think of a few examples where I exhibited bravery, most of them go a ways back, and all of them are rather lame.
I can think of a lot more instances where I could have exhibited bravery, but figured fuck that.

I will always take the path of least resistance, Not because I'm not brave, but because I'm not stupid.

Okay, I think I'm on to something now.

One might say, "You were pretty brave to run into that burning building to save that fourteen-year-old blind cat, which had run outside before the fire even started. Or one might say, "You ran into a burning building! How fucking stupid is that!?"

I'm searching my memory banks for a story, I recall some situations that may apply, but I'm wondering now, was that bravery or stupidity?

Perhaps I'm not very brave. Luckily my home is for the True North, Strong, and Free.

I believe true bravery is when someone confronts an internal fear. Like when an introvert goes against all the fear they have about being in public to ask a stranger in distress if they need some help. That, to me, is bravery.

30 Day Blogging Challenge PROMPT for January 11, 2020

Do you tend to be skeptical or trusting when meeting new people? Is your first impression of someone generally accurate, or does their true character surprise you?

Trust No One!
That's what they say, right.
That's what I do.
I befriend people quite easily, I don't discriminate, if you're a decent person, I'll be your friend.
It takes a lot longer to earn my trust.

When I meet people I always keep an open mind, I try not to judge, I don't give 'first impressions' a lot of merit, in favor of, let's just see what comes of this relationship.

I think that when I meet people, they notice that I'm pretty accepting, and non-judgemental, I think they appreciate that, and it creates a good foundation to build a good relationship on.

Having said that... there is another side to this.

I grew up in the North End of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The North End of the city has historically been the home of the most impoverished citizens.

I know there are neighborhoods all over the world that are way worse, and to the credit of Winnipegers, in general, there is a majority of excellent people, who are an asset to the community at large.

On the darker side, I've met and in some cases know very well gangsters, drug dealers, thieves, addicts, rapists, murderers, psychotics, child abusers, violent re-offenders, and all sorts of very, very bad actors.

All of the people I mentioned above, as I was writing the list, I pictured the actual people I was referencing.

When I was a teenager I was befriended by a neighborhood man, John Walluk, everyone knew him or about him. He had a reputation for being a violent, drug dealing, strong arm.

You did not want to be in debt of any kind to this man.

The owner of the pool room, which was a hangout for us teens, suggested that John play a game of pool against me. I was 14 or 15 years old at the time. I was nervous as fuck, but I played the game, I lost, which was probably a good thing, but John enjoyed having a game with me and afterward treated me with friendship, and acts of kindness. I knew John pretty good and knew enough to not get close.

One time when I arrived at the pool hall, John put his arm around me and announced in a loud enough voice for everyone in the building hear, " This is my son. If anyone ever has a problem with him, they have a problem with me."

A couple of years after this, John Waluk murdered a mother and her children, because the husband and father of the family owed drug money. (Christmas eve 1987)

https://winnipeg.ctvnews.ca/man-convicted-of-shooting-mom-two-kids-on-christmas-...

I ran into John after he was released from serving a life sentence for murder, he was eating in a restaurant I was working at. We looked at each other, made eye contact, he didn't recognize me, and I made out like I didn't recognize him, and kept on walking.

I'm a little off track here. What I'm trying to say is... While most people are good there are some wicked, evil people out there mixed in with the good people. Your ability to recognize the bad ones on sight is a life-saving skill.

I feel I have done well in this respect pointing to the fact I'm still here to write about it.

There you have it, another blog entry done, what do you think about that Andre?

30 Day Blogging Challenge PROMPT for January 10, 2020

What are some of the routines you follow in your daily life? Do you typically stick to your routine, or do you prefer more spontaneity?

The typical daily routine is... there is no daily routine.

My wife (Leslie) and I spend most days together either at home or at work.
Our work schedule is a per need schedule, we'll typically work 30-40 hours a month.

Our daily routine changes drastically with the seasons. We live in the woods near a lake, this is cottage country, there's always something to do, there are always people around in the summer. During the winter our community, Sunset Bay is very quiet, there are fewer than a dozen year-round residents here.

On most days we start our day with a cup of coffee and we go our separate ways to share joy and happiness online with the rest of the world.
We spend time in the yard. Leslie grows vegetables, spices, and flowers. I cut the grass, and kill weeds, insects, and rodents. We have an above-ground pool, I spend as much time cleaning and maintaining it as I do swimming in it, but we try and use it on a daily basis because the season is very short. We are very spontaneous in the summer and days could include a boat trip to fish or just tour around, we like to cycle, hike and quad ride. Quite often what happens is we set up a couple of lawn chairs in the yard then sit and enjoy a drink, soon a neighbor will stop by, then another, then more, next thing we know it's after midnight and there are seven drunk neighbors in the yard debating the existence of aliens.

During the winter months, it's a little harder to stay active. We belong to a Lions Club International club, we dedicate much of our daytime hours to doing Lions' work.
I'm the Marketing and Communications Director for our club and Leslie is a Service Projects Chairperson. Leslie also helps in every other aspect of the club, because she is pretty damn smart. We go bowling Thursday afternoons. We purchased a Skidoo last year, so we have a new activity to fill some wintery days. We love watching hockey. We have a couple of NHL teams and a couple of WHA teams we follow, we can stream most of the games we want to watch in either league, so most evenings watching hockey is our exciting event.

The short version of my current typical (stay at home) day
Coffee
News - gotta know what's going on out there.
Social media - follow me on Facebook.
Writing dot com time.
Exercise of some sort, even if it's clearing snow.
Lions work - even if it's just thinking about projects, people, or problems.
Guitar playing - even if I already played guitar earlier
Housework and Food preparation.

Hmm, pretty weak so far. I don't think I can add anything more to my typical day without making it look more pathetic as I go along.
Would it help if I said,
We sometimes go into town Monday nights to play BINGO?

Oh yeah, there's ice fishing.

It's not so bad, I say to myself as I quietly head towards the exit.

see you tomorrow.

I hope.

30 Day Blogging Challenge PROMPT for January 9, 2020

What are some of your favorite foods? Comfort food, ethnic food, meal, beverage, fruit, protein, unique food combination, etc - make us hungry!

Welcome to Andre's Self Serve
The home of discount meat and homemade Vodka

Very timely prompt.
The world is in the grips of a food crisis, and big business controls who eats, and what they eat, or, maybe I should have thought a little bit about what I'm going to write before I just start typing.

Sorry about that, my muse is bugging me today. Andre the Blog Monkey doesn't understand food. He only likes two things, bananas, and Vodka. He'll eat or drink anything else, he certainly isn't fussy, it doesn't even have to be food. Packing peanuts, motor oil, board game pieces, paint, doesn't matter if he feels like eating, and it's in his hand already, then...
Andre likes to eat anything that is packaged in a tube. I have to hide my toothpaste. I have to hide my toothbrush too, but for a different reason. I don't hide the Preparation H tube. Stupid monkey.

Oh yeah, it's not about Andre.

My grandfather was born in Lebanon. He came to Canada with his family as a young boy. He loved to cook and eat and learned to make all of the traditional dishes his parents raised him on and passed these delicious food experiences on to us.

I'm undergoing a drastic diet change at the moment. I'm not sure how long it will last or what my future food choices will be or won't be.

Tonight I had a meal that was almost 100% plant-based. (I put Feta cheese on my Greek salad which is not plant-based)
Tomorrow I'm making pizza, one for me with bacon, pepperoni, and mozzarella cheese and one for Leslie with no meat and non-dairy cheese.
Non-dairy cheese! I'd rather share a tube of something with Andre.

Unique food combinations - The winner is da, da da daaahh my mom, with spagetti (made from a box kit) and fish (frozen from a box)

My comfort foods are probably a thing of the past, but for what it's worth... Liptons Chicken noodle soup, bologna sandwiches, with butter and ketchup, I'm also fond of baby back ribs and potato chips.

My go-to beverage at home is Oceans Spray Cran-Cherry Cocktail diluted with two-thirds water.

Maybe enough food for thought for one blog entry.
Please exit through the gift shop.
