Prompt: What was I listening to last year?

You Don't Own Me

Girl power. This is a modern version of Leslie Gore's 1963 version.

The older version:

The song stands the test of time. We are always fighting to remain ourselves, vital and strong, not some ornament of some guy. We are true partners on a life journey, not someone that can be bossed around and be made to feel small and insignificant.

A few lyrics:
You don't own me
I'm not just one of your many toys
You don't own me
Don't say I can't go with other boys

And don't tell me what to do
Don't tell me what to say
And please, when I go out with you
Don't put me on display 'cause

Take Me To Church - Hozier

Love the dancing in this video. I love the music in this probably more than the words. It pulls me in and the dancing is exquisite. I wish I could move like that. It is so expressive and fluid.

A few lyrics:
My lover's got humor
She's the giggle at a funeral
Knows everybody's disapproval
I should've worshiped her sooner
If the Heavens ever did speak
She's the last true mouthpiece
Every Sunday's getting more bleak
A fresh poison each week
"We were born sick", you heard them say it
My church offers no absolutes
She tells me, "Worship in the bedroom"
The only Heaven I'll be sent to
Is when I'm alone with you
I was born sick, but I love it
Command me to be well
A-, Amen, Amen, Amen

Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

This is also a beautiful video:

I did not include the official video because I found it too disturbing. Judgmental people really rub me the wrong way.

The meaning.... https://www.popsongprofessor.com/blog/2015/04/15/what-does-take-me-to-church-by-...

"The chorus is an explicit and sarcastic attack on legalistic churches (or any church that follows guides which cause congregants to feel shame). Hozier sings, "Take me to church / I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies / I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife." He claims that the church demeans its attendees and attacks them for the things they do when those things go against the church's doctrine."

I get this aspect. Many feel religion is an enforcer... a strict adherence to church doctrine and legalistic aspects that judge.

But I separate my love of God and the religion of church.

God is a higher power. God is love. In all religions, God is love. One common heartbeat.

The church is run by human-kind... and in that, it is open to human frailties. That is not to say that every organized religion is legalistic, but one must take care when interpreting God's Word. Judgement rests with God, not with us.

What saddens me is that many abusers look to the Bible as giving them the right to do what they do.... and that sickens me. Those people have twisted the Word to make is suit them and that is the evilness that seeps in. They have warped the Word, like leaving it outside in the rain.

I feel more connected with my God when I walk through a grove of trees and listen to the world around me, than I do sitting in church. I also feel more connected when I share an intimate moment with friends. Where there is love, there is God.

God does not leave us in our pain. He sits with us. His presence surrounds us.... like a hug. We only need to let him in to feel it and feel the peace that comes with knowing he will never leave us alone.

Humans may leave. He will not.

Theme: What songs did I listen to last year?

We Believe - Newsboys

This is the same group as yesterday's blog post, but the lead singer is changed. I initially wasn't sure about the change, but I love the Newsboys sound and the new Lead singer grew on me. Talent continues to Shine on.
My faith is strong in the touch times... but also in the good.

I hope that whatever you believe in, is a source of strength as we move through these touch times.

A few lyrics:
In this time of desperation
When all we know is doubt and fear
There is only one foundation
We believe
We believe

In this broken generation
When all is dark, You help us see
There is only one salvation
We believe
We believe

Shine - Newsboys

All time favourite song. I gotta listen to this one really loud! Although I will admit it sounds better on my CD than it does out of the YouTube video. I get chills.

We all need to remember to shine. Show our talents. Don't hide them under a basket. Use them for good. You never know how you reach others, but you do... in wonderful, amazing and even unexpected ways. God always finds a way to use your talents to inspire others.

A few lyrics:
Shine.
Make 'em wonder whatcha got.
Make 'em wish that they were not
On the outside looking bored.
Shine.
Let it shine before all men.
Let em see good works and then
Let em glorify the Lord.

I Can Only Imagine - Mercy Me

I got to see this movie this year. The story behind the song is powerful. I think this is the song that launched this group into something bigger. It was written in response to a young man coming to terms with the past abuses of his father who is trying to redeem himself and make amends before he dies.

I am also including the official video as I like it better.

A few lyrics:
I can only imagine
What it will be like
When I walk by Your side
I can only imagine
What my eyes would see
When Your face is before me
I can only imagine
Yeah

Surrounded by Your glory
What will my heart feel?
Will I dance for You Jesus
Or in awe of You be still?
Will I stand in Your presence
Or to my knees, will I fall?
Will I sing hallelujah?
Will I be able to speak at all?
I can only imagine
I can only imagine

Praise You in the Storm - Casting Crowns

I love this group. In the video you get to see the music layering in as each instrument is added to the mix. I love the voices.
This song reminds me that we need to praise God even in the storms of life. We come out stronger in the end. We build our character and we remember what is important. Hard times need to pull us together not push us apart. Yes, there is physical distancing right now, but not social distancing. You can still smile and say hi to others. You just can't hug them.
We will come through this. Keep keeping on. This too shall pass.

A few lyrics:
I was sure by now
God, You would have reached down
And wiped our tears away
Stepped in and saved the day
And once again
I say, "A-men" and it's still rainin'

But as the thunder rolls
I barely hear Your whisper through the rain
"I'm with you"
And as Your mercy falls
I'll raise my hands and praise the God who gives
And takes away

God Only Knows - King and Country and Dolly Parton.

We all go through stuff. Some of it is dark and hard to deal with. God is there through it all... waiting for us to choose Him. Waiting for us to admit to ourselves that we can't go it alone - we need him... and we need connection. We were never meant to do it all alone.
Covid reminds us what is important - who is important. It is important to cherish our connections and lean it to our vulnerability and our need for that connection.

Here are a few lyrics:
I may not always love you
But long as there are stars above you
You never need to doubt it
I'll make you so sure about it
God only knows what I'd be without you

If you should ever leave me
Though life would still go on, believe me
The world could show nothing to me
So what good would living do me
God only knows what I'd be without you

There was Jesus - Zach Williams and Dolly Parton

I love seeing and hearing Dolly Parton putting her stamp on Christian music. I also like that she lets Zach Williams take the lead in this song and as it builds to the end she steps up and belts it out as only she can do. She really is a powerhouse.
There is strength in the words and this past year needed those words to build me up and keep me strong. I was doing a teaching job that was new to me and it had the added component of teaching online as well as in person. I often worry that I am not giving my students the best of me and this year was extra challenging because I was trying to do it in two very different ways.

I get a chuckle out of the fact that he is sitting down and she is standing up and they are close to the same height... though he is a little taller still.

Here are some of the lyrics:

Every time I tried to make it on my own
Every time I tried to stand and start to fall
And all those lonely roads that I have travelled on
There was Jesus
When the life I built came crashing to the ground
When the friends I had were nowhere to be found
I couldn't see it then but I can see it now
There was Jesus
In the waiting, in the searching
In the healing and the hurting
Like a blessing buried in the broken pieces
Every minute, every moment
Where I've been and where I'm going
Even when I didn't know it or couldn't see it
There was Jesus.

Theme: What songs did I listen to last year?
Mostly Christian music, I figure. I've always been a little eclectic.

Lauren Daigle - You Say

The lyrics really resonated with me. This was another mentally challenging year. I started my year on a low. My motivation was in tatters. This particular song pulled me up out of that funk and had me refocusing on what is important and what I am grateful for in my life.

I will share a few lyrics...

I keep fighting voices in my mind that say I'm not enough
Every single lie that tells me I will never measure up
Am I more than just the sum of every high and every low
Remind me once again just who I am because I need to know
Ooh-oh
You say I am loved when I can't feel a thing
You say I am strong when I think I am weak
And you say I am held when I am falling short
And when I don't belong, oh You say I am Yours
And I believe (I)
Oh, I believe (I)
What You say of me (I)
I believe

So I believe and I will forge ahead. Here's to a better year with more focus and productivity.

Go Caroling Day - December 20

https://nationaltoday.com/go-caroling-day/
My best memory of going caroling was when I went to my Uncle's family Christmas Eve celebration. My uncle is Italian. His family does a big Christmas Eve fest. I was invited to join them. After the wonderful meal of many courses, we all bundled up and went out for a horse drawn carriage ride. We sang carols as we went through the neighbourhood. My uncle sings flat and loves to sing loud. The rest of us had to sing louder to try to drown him out.
It was a blast. One of my best Christmas Eve's ever.
