This blog keeps me in touch with WDC. Jamesdillingham.com keeps me in touch elsewhere.
I like to stay in touch with WDC, even when I'm not contributing on a daily basis. My main blog is at jamesdillingham.blogspot.com

Right now I am using the following strategy to schedule my work.

Work takes priority.

Wrestling practice and tournaments follow work (when I am home).

Before lunch, free time is for learning JAVA and Eclipse.

After lunch, free time is working on novel I wrote during NaNoWriMo.

Evenings, Flash Fiction if not too sleepy (and I am always sleepy).

Spare 2 minutes, fill out blog.

2,000 words to go. I am going to write an Epilogue chapter since this is the type of story that can give birth to many more stories. Essentially a Seed Ship from Earth travels the galaxy and when it finds a planet, it "grows" a crew of colonists and seeds the planet. This story was about the first such seeding. Anyway, I just wrote Chapter 45, my final chapter and it made me cry. I love it when that happens. It used to surprise me but now, I just make sure no one is watching.

I will finish tomorrow, probably on a plane to Chicago. Then, I will take a month or two to polish it up before deciding wheat to do with it. I may have someone edit it and then use Amazon.com to self-publish.

Off to coach wrestling practice...the one thing I love more than writing.

I am 5,000 words behind with 7 days to go. By the next time my blog pesters me for an update, I should be able to say, "I did it!"

I am 7 hours behind. After 15 days and 7 hours, I have reached the midway point of my novel.

I have made some unexpected discoveries.

I remember reading a series of Books by Dan Simmons. In these books, he created a device called a Farcaster. You could go through one of these portals and end up somewhere else. After a while, these things become so ingrained that I could almost expect to go outside and see one for real.

He created something in his mind and wrote it into reality.

This has happened several times in my NaNoWriMo story. For me, there have been a couple of Sci-Fi elements that are coming to life. One is the nano-bath which is a tub of nano-bots that can be programmed to create just about anything. They operate on a quantum scale and thus are subject to the probabilities of the extremely small. They even have a sort of personality.

Another is the Cloud-mind. This is my attempt to come up with something other than the standard Artificial Intelligence.

And finally there are my characters. I have introduced a few major ones and several smaller ones. As the story progresses, they start to take on unique personalities that I seem to have very little responsibility for. It's as if "they" are deciding who they want to be and I am merely the scribe.

When I get to 50,000 words, the story will be over. However, I will have to go back and flush out much of what I have written. Now that I know the characters, I can see how i need to change or add to what I wrote when they first come on to the scene.

I hope to get my 1,667 words done today. Now that I am caught up, I want to stay that way.

I am really having a good time with my story. The idea of plowing ahead instead of three steps forward then two back is a lot of fun.

I am taking Saturday off from writing. Sunday is a long flight from Budapest to Chicago with a 4-hour layover in Munich so I will have plenty of time to make it up.

My blog wanted to be updated so here I am. Right now I am in Hungary splitting my time between work and NaNoWriMo. It's hard to keep cranking out 1,667 words a day. Right now, I am about 2,000 words behind.

I actually think this is a great exercise. I don't allow myself to go back and rewrite. I simply plow on ahead.

Back to the story.

Story is cooking right along. By the end of the day, I will only be showing 3,413 words which is well below the 4,800 I should have after 3 days. However, I am getting on a flight and cannot log in to update my words. By the 4th, I expect to be well ahead of schedule. I can get a lot of writing done on an 8-hour flight.

I proudly posted my 2,099 word count yesterday putting me well ahead of the 1,600+ pace I need to reach my goal of 50,000 words for NaNoWriMo. This morning I find that some have over 12,000 words!; In one day!

I need to get going.

I saw a quote this morning from Samuel Johnson, "What is written without effort is in general read without pleasure."

Okay, I get it. Some work may be involved. I am finding that if I try to be perfect, then I get stuck. If I try to do something creative and outside the box, words just flow.

I plan on going with the flow.
