This blog keeps me in touch with WDC. Jamesdillingham.com keeps me in touch elsewhere.
I like to stay in touch with WDC, even when I'm not contributing on a daily basis. My main blog is at jamesdillingham.blogspot.com

I am getting ready to enter a period where my work will be light. I'm looking forward to using this time to write.

I've said this before and just when I settle in...the phone starts ringing and I'm off somewhere else.

But I am writing...a lot.

My book gets 1,000 words a day and is nearly complete (I am at 92K words).

While I have about 20 blogs, two are main ones, getting a 1,000 word post apiece about every other day.

I also have a professional book that I'm working on

I am trying to get more involved in LinkedIn so I start comment threads and respond to others.

I am also looking into writing piecework. This is a hard thing to do since the pay is near nothing...but it gets my writing out there.

Day 3,254...or so

The book...it finally...getting done.

I am at 88,000 words. My target is 100,000 before editing.

I can see the end is in site as I have written 5,000 words in the last week. The pace is picking up in the story and I have a hard time stopping every day. I make myself stop so it is not so hard to make myself restart.

I will need to go back and flush out a few things...mostly character development.

I have been keeping good track of events, timing and such so I don't think there are a lot of issues there.

I have to say, I really like this book. It's sort of "Suppose Jesus came back to Earth to fix things, and he didn't do it in the way you thought he would."

My main guy is not Jesus but he is definitely someone that will change...everything.

Done by the end of February.

Thought I would take a moment to silence me blog reminder.

Still working on book with 300 words a day minimum. Except when I'm on the road (and I'm always on the road).

I have been writing on my blog (jamesdillingham.com) quite a bit so I am getting some writing in. The thing is, I have much lower standards for my blog than I do for my stories.

Maybe I can get a flash fiction story in today on the airplane.

My blog keeps telling me to update it so I guess I must...

I have been entering the Daily Flash Fiction from time to time. I'd like to see more entries from other people. This is such a good forum for practice and quick feedback.

I'm sitting in the hot tub the other night trying to see falling stars. I see none, in spite of my best efforts to "will" it to happen. I decide to get out of the way and let the sky just "occur." I took a deep breath and as I let it out...there is a huge shooting star.

So I think, "Maybe the universe is trying to communicate with me. Maybe its saying, "get out of the way."

So I think, I will pose a question to the universe and then get out of the way an let it respond or not as it sees fit.

I ask "Should I give me book a higher priority?" I then breathe out and...another shooting star.

Only two starts in 30 minutes; both after I got out of the way.

Hmmmm....

I love to write.

So why don't I do it all the time?

The satisfaction I get when I finish a Flash Fiction story is soooo good - and yet sometimes boiling some hot water will take priority.

I was planning on having a few weeks off from work to write on my book. Then work came and found me. I suppose this is okay. I work for myself so work = pay.

Anyway, I just sneaked in a quick 30 minutes to pop out a short story...felt good.

Now back to work...

Since I started working on my book a couple of weeks ago, I've completed two chapters and entered 10 short story contests. The third chapter should be done today or tomorrow. I am at 81,000 words with a rough target of 100,000.

I've started over several times on this book. Now, I'm done with that. I will edit it once I am done, but no more starting over.

I have managed to maintain some writing discipline. By that I mean fewer political blogs, more short stories and 300 words per day for my book. I've finished two book chapters in the last 2 weeks.

Interestingly, I checked my stats and saw that my stories have been viewed over 70,000 times! How can we not write when there are so many readers...

Airplane tomorrow...by the end of next week, I'll have been on 120 airplanes this year.

The writing continues…

On my book: I started last week with a daily minimum of 300 good words. So far, I’m averaging more than that. My intent is to keep this up until the book is done; maybe another 2 months or so. I do situps every day and I hate those. I should be able to do something I love every day.

On my blog (jamesdillingham.com): short post

On my short stories: Entered the Daily Flash Fiction Challenge.

Most of today has been spent on an airplane. That’s a good time to write so long as the person next to me is not so big his armrest won’t go down (happened to me two weeks ago). I spent the entire flight like William Shatner in that old Twilight Zone episode where he kept his face plastered to the window as some creature tore at the engine.

Savannah is 15 minutes away. Gotta run.

Yesterday I posted my 500th item to my portfolio.

Seems like a lot.

That item was chapter 38 of my book. Now that I'm back into it, I really like where this story is going. I'm at about 80K word and I probably have another 20-30K to go.

My wife asked me about how I know what is going to happen in a chapter and I couldn't really say. It went like this: "I start creating a setting and then I have someone in it and I realize that I know who that is. And, if he is in it, then this other person must be doing something and then, sure enough that other person shows up doing something. Since this is a certain combination of characters, there is only one possible turn and that is danger followed by reconciliation. And then I notice the chapter is over."

Hmmm....

I do know where the story is headed and I know sort of how it will end.

I seem to have traded blogging for fiction.

I have this need to write. I'm sure you know what I mean. For the last year or so, I've been blogging more and more.

Then last week, I decided to get back into my book. Since then, I've written 5 short stories and only 1 blog.

My blog tends to be about everyday news with a huge emphasis on the hypocrisy of politics. I sit down to blog and the words just fill up the page.

Fiction is harder. Mark Twain sort of eluded to this. Truth is stranger than fiction because fiction has to make sense.

There is a difference between how I feel after blogging and writing. Blogging leaves me feeling relieved. I was able to get something off of my chest. Fiction leaves me excited. Wow! If I could make that story happen, I can make other stories happen as well.

Creating is exciting. Writing fiction is creating.

Now for my book. I have it open on my computer and am in the process of reading the last couple of chapter to get in the zone. I also have an excel spread sheet to help me keep track of events and dates. That is harder than I thought it would be when I first started writing.

Enough stalling...to the book!
