Brief insights into my writing world. |
I started my blog in June 2016, intending to have a place to get my stories in the hands of readers. I started with one follower -- my wife. Seven years later, I am creeping toward 500 followers. I post a daily quote, as well as short stories, vignettes, and updates on our rebuilding project. You can find my Tavern Tales at: https://jjshaun.com/ Enjoy! |
I am working on the stories I need to tease my novel with the working title of Meegan's Quest. I've started the prologue with a seemingly unrelated set of vignettes that will tie into the teaser tales. In this vignette, I continue the tale with the characters introduced at The Jaunty Mug coffee shop, and their respective role-play characters. "As the Thursday role-play crowd settles into their characters at The Jaunty Mug, I work my magic. Bert spins his narrative. To their eyes, the coffee shop morphs into a seedy tavern. For the next several hours, they are in Ev’Ran, Bert’s fictional realm of the multiverse." Read the full story at: https://jjshaun.com/2024/01/14/welcome-to-evran/ |
When customers enter, they believe I am a normal coffee shop. What they don’t realize is that I am a hub of the multiverse. The atmosphere changes, depending on the clientele. Thursday nights are my favorite. That’s the night my favorite role-play gaming group takes over the establishment to lose themselves in their world at the far side of my portal. As the new year begins, you’ll see some changes in the Tavern Tales. Quotes will continue to fill the void on days I have nothing to say, or life has overwhelmed me to distraction. Sundays, you’ll see more of the stories I have written and polished. I posted some of those stories on this site as I struggled to find material. I’ve since removed some of them, and I’ll give them a good scrubbing as I work on the upcoming changes. Read the full post here: http://jjshaun.com/2023/12/24/changes-on-the-horizon/ |
This is the last post of our journey to rebuild as the dream has finally come to fruition. As we gather our belongings in one place and sort through all that’s been donated, gifted, and purchased, we still have a lot of work ahead of us. What we can’t use, or have multiples of, we will donate to family, friends, and resale stores. People have been generous and we plan to pay it forward. The word of the week: water. We finally got the plumber up to get the system up and running. Turns out, it wasn’t as easy as plug and play—they thought they connected incorrectly and burned the pump out. We shut the system down and cut power. He ordered a new water pump and double-checked the configuration. Read the full post and see pictures at: http://jjshaun.com/2023/11/19/rebuilding-the-dream-pt-161/ |

This has been a stressful week. We’ve reached the inspection stage of the project. The inspectors discovered a few minor issues and two major ones. One of the major issues is the need to rebuild the basement staircase. We caught one inspector as he was leaving the property a few days ago, and he verified a few things for us regarding the temporary Certificate of Occupancy. It was good to hear some good news for a change. Read the full post and see pictures at: http://jjshaun.com/2023/10/22/rebuilding-the-dream-pt-157/ |
