For my blog "Prompt: How do you discern the presence of God in your life?"

I don't want to sound nit-picky but I want to be doctrinally sound. I believe it can be dangerous for us to want to discern the presence of God in our lives. The reason I say that is because Hebrews 11:1 defines faith as "the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."

If we spend our time seeking to "feel God's presence or have the hair on the back of our neck stand up due to His overwhelming presence, we undermine faith. True faith is believing that God is there even when we don't feel Him. True faith is never doubting God and knowing that even when I am in the middle of my worst possible storm, God is right there beside me whether I "feel" Him or not. Faith needs no evidence of God's presence because the faith itself IS the evidence.

For my blog I apologize for the delayed prompt. I got home late last night and was a little sick this morning. I went to sickbay and they diagnosed me as not getting proper sleep.

On the way to sickbay, we put into port at a familiar star. Princess Megan Rose , our second in command, writes

Solar Eclipse  (E)
A poem about the solar eclipse.
#2130646 by Princess Megan Rose
. What do you think?

I remember the lunar eclipse of the 1990's. I was selling vaccuum cleaners at the time and I was with a customer when the sky became as black as night at noon! The customer took it as an omen and bought the sweeper. It was the only one I ever sold.

For my blog "Prompt: What is your desire for God? What is God's desire for you? What are the hindrances?

My desire for God is that He not have to put up with human sin. God is perfect and sin hurts him. I know it is hard to imagine hurting God, but I feel that sin makes Him physically ill. It grieves Him and I do not want that for Him.

God's desire for me is for me to be like Jesus.

The hindrances to doing so are the lust of the eye, the lust of the world, and the pride of life.

For my blog "Prompt: If you were a block of marble, what would God have to chip away to reveal the real
you inside?"

Wow! That is a tough question! I believe I am fairly transparent as I am. AAs a chaplain it is part of my job to remain transparent and maintain a high level of integrity. I am currently working to build my credit up to impeccable but that takes a lot of doing. All in all, I believe most people see the real me. I ask people to confront me if they ever feel I am anything but genuine with them. I can easily fall into the trap of being insincere and often would not realize I am doing so. The Holy Spirit usually notifies me immediately.

Way Back When  (13+)
A poem about way back when.

I remember "way back when." What floors me is to be in a history class talking about things that happened in the 60's and 70's as if they are something out of a book. To me those events are memories! I was in a class where the professor showed a slide of an event that occurred locally in 1980 and I was one of the people in the picture!

My surgery went great. I had little pain to speak of although the incision was nearly 15 inches long on my arm and 2 inches on my palm. I am now able to type though I have to wear a carpal tunnel brace for two more weeks day and night. Jesus has been really good to me through this and I praise Him for that.

For my blog "Prompt:" What spiritual disciplines or practices do you wish to commit to? What can you commit to in order to improve your relationship with God?"

The spiritual disciplines I need the most work on are prayer and Bible reading. I have read the Bible cover to cover nearly 30 times. I am trying to read each of the major English translations at least once. I am currently reading the New Living Translation and doing it on a Bible app on my phone. I usually read at night. This past week I have been exhausted at night and have fallen asleep without praying or reading. I've been burning the candle at both ends with everything going on so today I am trying to regroup.

I love Clerihew poetry. I have to agree with the author that the wisdom of the sages is often ignored. Of course, as a Christian, I am taught to ignore a lot of the "wisdom" of the sages because Greek philosophers did not know Jesus.

I decided to try this one-handed typing. To be honest, I expected to be in much worse pain than i am in. My left arm is immobilized so I cannot use my left hand, but the anesthesiologist put a nerve block on my left arm that is just now beginning to wear off. it got me through the first 24 hours after surgery and the nurses here see to it that i have my pain meds on time round the clock. So the crux is that I am virtually pain free. I still cannot move the index finger of my left hand nor feel my thumb, but they are blocked still. My dressing does not come off for five days. i have to put my arm in a bag to shower.

For my blog "Prompt: How can I better love those around me and show hospitality more to others?"

Dr. Bruce Winston, a professor at Regent University, identified the word "agapeao" as the type of love taught in God's word. It means "to do the next right thing" for those around us.

First of all my condolences to the author. I feel this was personal.

Loss is never easy. I would never say "I know what you are feeling" because I do not know. I know how I would feel in the situation. Never underestimate grief or tell somebody they are grieving wrong or for too long. We each grieve in the way right for us.

My surgery is tomorrow at 11 AM WDC time. I'll see you when I can type again.

For my blog "Prompt: Do I practice the discipline of daily gratitude? If yes, how does that impact my faith and attitude? If not, write 10 or more things you are grateful for. Remember to give God some praise!"

I try to praise God every day. I love seeing the miracles that occur in my life and the lives of those around me. We have seen people on life support walk out of hospitals. We have saw things totally impossible by science occur. God is amazing.

I just had an incredible weekend at the Salvation Army, Potomac Division Men's Camp in Virginia. I competed until I was sore. The only competition I even placed in was the Bible quiz. I won second place in it. However the weekend was great! We had worship services each night and on Sunday morning. We competed against each other in singles events and team events such as cornhole, horseshoes, and others. Of course we ate and ate and ate some more. I think I gained five pounds! If I didn't it was because I burned the calories packing it around! Thank you Potomac Division!

Image #2249882 over display limit. -?- "Prompt: How do I use my talents and gifts to serve my family and others?"

I hope I use them effectively. God does not give us anything that He does not expect us to give away. One of the reasons I am a soldier and local officer with the Salvation Army Huntington Corps in Huntington WV is because the Salvation Army gives away nearly everything they get. If they do not give away the actual item, they give away the proceeds from the sale of the item. 80% of all funds raised by the Salvation Army goes directly into the community at some level. The other 20% is used mainly to keep the lights on. The corps officers have very little income and receive only a stipend. So I firmly support the Salvation Army at all levels. I also use my talents and gifts to further their cause by volunteering.

Image #2249882 over display limit. -?- "Prompt: Am I focused more on my behavior or the One who transforms who I am? Am I focused on what I must do or what Jesus has done?"

These are related theological questions. They ask us if we are trying to change ourselves or if we are waiting for Jesus to change us? The fact of the matter is that none of us would be changed if we had to change ourselves. We could make superficial changes but nothing permanent and meaningful. Change comes about by faith and faith is a gift of the Holy Spirit. Without His help we are just spinning our wheels.

 The Bald Eagles  (E)
A poem about the noblest of creatures: our national symbol.
#1323802 by Tim Chiu
Write about eagles today for your Blog Prompt.

Most people do not know that the bald eagle does not make the "screaming sound" we hear depicted on television. Producers found out that the eagle actually makes a very feeble croaking like noise so they adopted the screaming "cawww, cawww" sound of the red tail hawk to symbolize the "sound" of the eagle. An eagle's call is not intimidating at all, though it's physique certainly is. An eagle can spot a mouse on the ground from 2 miles away and can dive at speeds in excess of 125 MPH! Their wing span can exceed six feet wide, wider than an average man is tall! I had my picture taken with Freedom, an Eagle kept by a ranger in Clarksburg WV but cannot find the picture.

Image #2249882 over display limit. -?- "Prompt: They say anger is a secondary emotion. What primary emotions do you think God is feeling when he is angry? There is a reason our sins make God angry, and it is motivated by his love for us."

I had never really thought of that. To humans, anger is secondary to fear. fear rises in us and we respond physiologically by releasing adrenaline and cortisol in the body, which gives us enough strength to either fight or run. Fear is the emotion pushing that.

On God's part I would say that anger is a primary emotion because God has nothing to fear. If God feared anything, it would be losing fellowship with his creations (us). I doubt that he fears that. If anger is secondary for God it would be to Jealousy, though I am not comfortable psychoanalyzing God. So I doubt anger is secondary to God, but rather primary.

Wolf Moon  (E)
Response to a prompt about the moon.
#2024878 by House Florent is ready

a poem about the moon. How does the moon affect you, or does it?

Some religions such as Wicca, and Paganism, and Judaism follow the moon phases. I don't know one moon phase from another except for the full moon. I do know the full moon seems to have an influence on human behavior. I don't know if it is the gravitational forces or what it is, but human behavior seems eccentric during the full moon. When I was a first responder, we made sure we had the squad fully staffed on the night of the full moon and most of the days before and after because we were sure to have an auto accident or some oddity those nights. It seemed inevitable.

Bible reading and prayer are extremely important to daily living. In fact, they are so important that Regent University makes doing so a part of the daily curriculum for their spiritual formation classes. Bible reading and prayer keep us in tune with God's will.

Cruise to this planet and tell us about any genies you've uncorked.

The last time I uncorked a bottle, I drank 17 white Russians. On the way home, with my wife as a designated driver, we were pulled over for a taillight. The police officer was a lifelong friend so when he asked to breathalyze me without a promise that I would not be arrested, I let him do so. I blew a 0.459, which is almost fatal. He let me go due to his promise and our friendship, but told my wife to call him the moment I passed out. To spite him I drank coffee and ate to stay awake. It made me sick so...
