How to Read the Tarot

Begin by brewing a cup of tea,
a nervine, lemon balm or chamomile,
this is after all, your future.
A reading at the dark of the moon is best,
before the night creatures crawl
and bad humours fill the air.
Pick a circular deck, with a fairy-tale motif,
and no reversals.
Hold a question in your heart,
shuffle the cards and place them on the table.
Choose only two.
Like the ancient Israelites,
these are your seer stones, Urim and Thumimm,
black and white, yes or no.
Isn't that all you were asking?

Monday October 24 is my wedding anniversary. 22 years married and lived together for 5 before that. Second marriage for both of us and we mer before Internet dating through a personal ad in the Naples Daily News.

The poem is for my sweetie--inspired by a contest prompt that I was too lazy to get in on time.

Being Romantic

He said, "let's be romantic."
So the night of the storm
we ate Cheerios by candlelight
and he said, "good to the last O."

He told me piggy stories
as he rubbed my feet,
and I whispered, "Oh, oh, oh.....:

We Are in Festive Mood

We dance to dispel destruction
and scatter random seeds of
kindness, weirdness, youngness.
We work with beetles, bacteria,
fungi and dung
turning earth, weeds, insects and worms
into good medicine.
We are the descendants of the witches you did not burn.

Author's Note: My family and I were spared the destruction of Hurricane Ian. While there is gratitude many are still hurting and in despair. I am working to mitigate the devastation in both practical ways and magickal ways.

My family, friends and I have all survived Hurricane Ian. No damage to our home. My son's business has had damage, my ex-husband without power still, but grateful we are all alive and well. That being said, internally I am sensing that everything has changed. I don't feel like everything is over and it surely isn't over for Fort Myers Beach and Sanibel Island. The devastation is real, the heartache is real.

In a blast of good news, however, our McNasty neighbors have moved. I will be happy if we never see them again.

I learned that the bald cypress knees that appear after a storm are now believed to help the trees anchor during storm and not necessarily to provide oxygen to their roots. I want to align myself with those cypress knees. Many of the trees still standing have leaves that have turned brown, typical for cypress needles. Not so for the others, I am guessing they have been "burned" by the fierce winds and moisture sucked out. I imagine they will recover. Not certain SW Florida will recover. My life is back to "normal"--we have power, I am working, stores are open, but things feel "off" to me. Perhaps time will help.

Wetland

We have no mountains
rising to the sun
the eye arcs north and south
across a river of grass,
the palm trees and mangroves
sluicing the sky
as we drive the Tamiami Trail.

Over and over, the children ride
the dragon coaster
at the Everglades fair
unknowing that beneath them rides
the vouivre , a coiled serpent
of telluric currents
full of the earth's energy.

Our watery world floats
on shell mounds
left by the Calusa centuries before
and one perfect storm
might erase us, too.
The wet center is endless
and may not hold.

Destructive Patterns--willingness to change, be honest with yourself and others

I wrote Wetland in 2010--but particularly significant to me after Hurricane Ian.

I am still in my 108 day journey of communion with trees---most particularly Sister Southern Cypress.

Cypress is a deciduous tree---it's needles turn reddish brown in the winter/fall. Tomorrow is the autumnal equinox. Cypress is a tree to remind us of time's cycles and that all is born, dies, and returns again.

There is myth and speculation that Jesus' cross, especially the horizontal bar was made of cypress.

Scott Cunningham, that old magician, writes that Cypress essential oil is good for healing and easing losses. I had a healing emergency this week (better now) and using the scent of Cypress.

We have cypress growing on the back of our property, but I haven't been back there because the McNasty neighbors haven't yet moved.

I will visit my trees when I can. We have a lovely boardwalk fashioned nature trail north of here. Six Mile Cypress Slough. An oasis in the midst of urban development. You can smell the change in the quality of the air when you enter. I will revisit when it is less hot and humid here in SW Florida.

Blessings to all sentient, and sapient beings! And that of course is all!

Gaian Tarot--18--The Moon
Awaken and trust your intuition.

silence is a more powerful weapon of protest

Then, why are you here?
To join the dark, silent revolution.

What do you believe?
That all has sentience and sapience.

What is your heart's desire?
For human voices to go mute.

What will you learn?
The language of trees, rocks, rivers, mycelium.

And in the end?
It is all mystery.

Catch-22

I am applying cypress essential oil to the soles of my feet
and to my third eye.
I want to expand my limbs upward to the sky
and remain rooted to the earth.
My body is a paradox, a conundrum,
a catch-22.
I live in it but like Spinoza
I do not know all it can do.
I am cosmic dust
and will be vast and silent
in death's stillness.
God's eye is on the sparrow
and yet knows my face map.
I whisper and,hope, and shudder
to know my limits
for pleasure and pain.
From the pulpit
preachers roar,
ashes to ashes.

I am starting a 108 day journey of meditation/communion with the sentient beings known as trees.

I am focusing particularly on cypress and what she has to teach me. Cypress trees are abundant in SW Florida and we have several in our backyard.

I happened to have cypress essential oil in my collection and will be working with that as well.

This morning while meditating with cypress I visualized my roots intermingling with hers in the Earth. While typing this I am feeling heat at the soles of my feet moving up my legs. I saw a suggestion to use cypress oil on the soles of your feet as well as annointing the body's chakras. I plan to incorporate that into my 108 days as well. Will be wearing cypress oil on my lava stone bracelet.

Dancing at Lammas

I have always believed that healing is what happens when you move beyond suffering into myth. I think that is what happened when Sybylla showed up in my life.

She appeared during the height of Covid when we were all still masked and staying home.

Sybylla is a veiled mermaid that lives in the retention pond behind our condo. She communicates more infrequently with me now, as more people are around and she prefers to remain a mystery. Her communications have always been profound.

Lammas is coming up on August 1st, a Harvest festival. Sybylla tells me it is her favorite holiday. It celebrates the abundance of the earth, and by extension the waters of the earth.

In antediluvian times the Sibyls, particularly the African Sibyls, were the rulers of the land. And it is likely they had the force and power, and were the embodiments of the Divine Feminine. Sybylla is a devotee of Mami Wati.. Mami Wati is the Igbo goddess of water, and is often represented as a mermaid. Her feast day is June 25th, but Sybylla prefers celebrating her at Lammas.

The core of Mami Wata's worship is dance, and Sybylla associates her at Lammas with the play, "Dancing at Lughnasa".

Rhythm is ebb and flow, the alternating of sound and silence over time.

Sybylla says on Lammas Day to listen, dance and sway until you forget yourself, until you know yourself as ebb and flow, sound and silence, power and creativity.

Dark Goddess Tarot--Three of Water--Mami Wata---Dance for yourself, for your tribe, for the Divine.

Author's Note: My blog has many entries concerning Sybylla. These are not to be considered a part of this entry for the Creature Feature contest. I am listing them in chronological order for any who might want to read them.

A hand emerges from a steamy crater holding aloft a flaming torch. A ladder arises from the crater. This morning's card from the Somnia Tarot-Ace of Wands---Aces always indicate the start of new beginnings--and wands--fire and action--spiritual growth.

Some weeks ago I attended a healing class, "The Jesus Codes"--a learned a new healing modality, not a bad idea to have a backpack full of healing energy tools. I also learned more about the Solfeggio frequencies. And while it is not strictly music--they are the sounds I most frequently listen to at this time.

The tones were initially discovered by Guido d"Arezzo and were initially found to be prevalent in the chanting of Gregorian monks.

I play the sounds first thing in the morning with my coffee--and prepare to face the day. I listen at night to help me sleep and to release the stressors of the day.

Goggle Solfeggio frequencies and you will find a wealth of information. Happy listening and healing!

A delightful, wonderful day at a local water park celebrating my granddaughter Treasure's 14th birthday. She is tall, 6 ft,, lithe and thin with a mane of red hair. She has told her mother that she likes girls, in like the romantic way. I don't know if this is just young teenage exploration or her core identity. I do not care if she is gay or bisexual, I just want her to be brave and happy. But this is Governor DeathSentence's Florida and I worry for our state, our country, our future. But today there was sun, and water, and laughter, and family and friends, and for now peace in my little corner of paradise.

It seems apparent that the McNasty downstairs neighbors are truly moving. Just in case, I sprinkled their driveway this week with Destroy Everything oil. The spell cast was to destroy all of their malevolent actions and intents against us to be reversed and returned to them. In non-ordinary reality I created a thick plexiglass wall dividing our houses and curved it so that any negative energy returns to them. May it be so.

Pholarchos Tarot--6 of Wings--The children of the sun are balancing all the beauty of the earth.. The present is a gift.
