Dark (a Halloween story)

October 13, 2026Â [Image #2356859]

October is horror month, so I thought I would do something a little different today and share a short story that fits the season. And a Trinket.

Dark
 by Tee

It is dark. Not the kind of dark that comes when you turn off the lights and wait for your eyes to adjust. This darkness feels solid, as though it has weight. It presses against my eyes and fills every space around me. I keep w...[Read Full Post]

Fire Protection

Â
October 12, 2026Â [Image #2356859]

Things I Never Knew about fire suppression.

Note: almost 100 percent of homes that catch fire while families are at home someone is hurt or dies. Sprinklers change that to less than 10 percent. Part of her job is to research and report the actual numbers for each state.
Â
On Sunday, while talking with my daughter, we somehow got onto the subject of fire codes.
Â
That probably isnât a normal ...[Read Full Post]

Loyalty

Â
October 11, 2026Â [Image #2356859]

I have always found wolves fascinating. There is something about them that seems to represent strength, freedom, and perhaps most of all, loyalty.
Â
But the loyalty of wolves is more than something we have turned into a beautiful symbol. Wolves live in family groups, and much of their survival depends upon cooperation. They hunt together, travel together, raise their young together, and prot...[Read Full Post]

That Yellow Dress

October 10, 2026Â [Image #2356859]

I will never forget that yellow dress and being in that play.

When I was in the sixth grade, I had an experience that most children my age never had. I became one of the two young leads in a play performed by a local group of college players under the direction of a husband-and-wife team.

I wish I could remember the name of the play.

After all these years, pieces of it are still remarkably ...[Read Full Post]

An Evening by the River

October 9, 2026Â [Image #2356859]

Â
Iâve mentioned before that I have something of a reputation for putting together interesting parties.
Â
This one may have been among the biggest.
Â
It was also a fundraiser for a political campaign. I had served as treasurer for the candidateâs campaign, and we wanted to create an evening people would genuinely enjoy while also raising money. More than 700 invitations went out, and over 400 peop...[Read Full Post]

Flamboyance

October 8, 2026 [Image #2356859]

Re: Eventually, if weâre lucky, we grow into ourselves.

Did you know that a group of flamingos is called a flamboyance?

I think that may be one of the most perfectly chosen names in the English language.

After all, what else would you call a gathering of tall, bright pink birds standing around on impossibly thin legs? A flock simply doesnât seem grand enough. Flamingos deserve somethi...[Read Full Post]

Run Evan Run!

This was written for the 48-HOUR CHALLENGE: Media Prompt: Run Boy Run by Wooded. Word count: 648

Evan loved to run.

He ran to the mailbox. He ran to the bus stop. He ran across the playground at recess and down the sidewalk whenever his mother sent him to Mrs. Parkerâs house next door.

âDo you ever walk anywhere?â his mother asked him one morning.

Evan grinned. âWalking takes too long.â

Running made him feel free. When his feet pounded against the ...[Read Full Post]

Scoundrels in a Family Tree

October 7, 2026 [Image #2356859]

A few days ago, you may have read my blog, Stamps and a Family History. One of the reviews I received on that entry reminded me that I have another collection of family historyâone that contains quite a few more scoundrels!

I had a sister who loved genealogy. She enjoyed going to archives, digging through old records, and following our family lines as far back as she could take them. She ...[Read Full Post]

Step Away to Survive

A few days ago, this was posted as a prompt at Blogging Circle of Friends by [Link To User elusive4lyn] :

âWith the new day comes new strength and new thoughts.â â Eleanor Roosevelt

Prompt: A rested brain sees old problems in a new way. Is it possible to find creative solutions and better ideas when you stop routine or negative thinking?

Do you think...[Read Full Post]

A Christmas Job

October 5, 2026 [Image #2356859]

A Christmas Job

One year when I was 21, I decided to take a part-time job to earn a little extra money for Christmas.

I went to an employment placement office, and they sent me to work for the county court system in an office connected with the Social Security system.

I certainly didnât expect my little Christmas job to teach me quite so much about people.

Every day I was handed large sheet...[Read Full Post]
