This will discuss the development of my new Community site, Quatscho.com. |
| Quatscho is a website I have been working on for several months. The intent is to grow a community that is free from algorithms and ads. Everything is free and will remain so. |
| Earn Quatscho Points! Interacting with the site will earn you Quatscho Points (QP), which you can use to give awards to other users' posts to show your admiration for their work. You don't need to do anything other than interact with different parts of the site to earn QP. Six tiers of awards are available at different prices. Once awarded to a post, it will be permanently displayed on that post. | A few small interface updates to Quatscho today: What is Quatscho? Quatscho is a new blogging/writing community that is designed with authors in mind. It is by no means intended to compete with writing.com, but rather to offer a different platform for easily sharing your work. You may notice that nearly all of my own work is cross-posted between both sites, and I've designed Quatscho with this in mind. Of course, integration with writing.com is unlikely to happen but I am exploring ways of making using both sites interchangeably easier. It is free to use, and is free of algorithms and ads. You will never see an ad on Quatscho, nor will your data ever be sold to third parties for any reason. In fact, your data is securely encrypted and cannot be accessed without the proper credentials. While no server is 100% immune to attacks, I have implemented strong protective measures to keep user data safe and protected. I'm quite proud of how far I've brought Quatscho since I first launched it back in March. Back then, I used multiple third-party plugins that weren't necessarily compatible with each other. The result was a Frankensteinian experience, so I closed access to it and started over with my own code. Now, Quatscho is 100% custom, first-party code. It is currently built on top of Wordpress, but in the future I hope to be able to transition away from that foundation to a Quatscho foundation. Come check it out! | The Quatscho Editor is slightly different from what you may be used to. Instead of a monolithic text area in which you create elements by double spacing between paragraphs or formatting text to create headers, Quatscho Editor uses Elements. The basic element you will use most often is the paragraph element. This is intended for a single paragraph and will not respect double spacing between paragraphs within it. To start a new paragraph, you need to insert a new paragraph element. You can do so using the Insert Element Picker Card. Once you've inserted one, you can use the Repeat button next to it or a keyboard shortcut to add the next one. This button/shortcut will always add another instance of your most recently used element. There are quite a few elements available for use to format your document. Give them each a try. Using these elements, you will be able to quickly jump to specific ones using the Document Outline sidebar. You can also customize the text in your elements by using the Element Settings tab in the sidebar. You can drag each element to a different position within your document, avoiding the need to copy/cut & paste text. You can also organize your elements within Document Tabs. These tabs have no effect on the final published work - they are strictly for organizing your elements. This is especially useful if you are writing a long document and don't want to have a hundred elements to deal with. Split them up between your document tabs instead! You can even drag elements between tabs. Use the Lock button to lock the editor in place and maximize your workspace. This will hide all parts of the Front End Editor that are not the Write tab. The Quatscho Editor includes a Story Tracker that you can use to plan and outline your work. This is available only for Creative Writing entries. When you lock the editor, you can use the Story Tracker button to access your outline. It will autosave your work so that you can quickly pick up where you left off if your browser suddenly quits on you, or you forget to save your draft. | I've made a few improvements to the Front End Editor: As always, you can check out the changes and try them out on https://www.quatscho.com/ |
| You can now add co-authors to a document, whether it be a normal blog post or a creative writing entry. Co-authors can edit only the elements they author, and they can move them around the document. This will allow them to add depth to the collaborative writing without touching others' contributions. The primary author (you) has full editing access to all elements. Screenshot #1 (Facebook) Screenshot #2 (Facebook) Come join us: https://www.quatscho.com/ Next on the list: exporting to .docx |
| Content Ratings are now mandatory for published Creative Writing entries. Normal blog entries are unaffected. Quatscho's Content ratings: E - Everybody Appropriate for all ages. Mild peril, cartoon/fantasy violence, non-scary adventure, friendship, romance such as crushes/hand-holding, mild insults, non-graphic illness or injury, ordinary emotional conflict. T - Teen Appropriate for 12+: Contains themes or situations that may be unsuitable for younger children. Moderate fantasy/action violence, characters in genuine danger, scary situations, bullying, stronger language, heavier emotional themes, dating/romantic relationships, non-explicit discussions of sex, grief, discrimination, substance use presented non-graphically. A - Adult Appropriate for 16+: Mature themes and situations intended for older teens/adults. Strong violence, blood and injury, horror, disturbing themes, significant profanity, drug/alcohol use, sexual situations without explicit detail, mature relationship themes, abuse or trauma, crime, death and its consequences. Ex - Explicit Not appropriate for readers younger than 18. Explicit sexual activity, graphic sexual descriptions, pornography, highly graphic violence/gore, or other material intended exclusively for adults. Users can choose which rating level they wish to have shown to them. Don't want to see Ex rated content? Deselect it in your Settings. Quatscho does not use content ratings to make editorial determinations. Content Ratings are for readers, not the server. Content Ratings are displayed on your Creative Writing entry to help readers decide if they wish to read it or not. You can choose the appropriate rating for your work in the Setup tab of the editor once you select Creative Writing. It is not required until you are ready to publish, so you can leave your drafts unrated if you choose. Ready to join? Check it out here: https://www.quatscho.com/ |
| Story Tracker had a serious bug that appeared not to save certain data. Here's what happened: The server and the browser had two different ideas of what the data stream should look like. This resulted in multiple entries being created, and for entries that already existed, the wrong entry was being displayed. This has been fixed. Creating / editing tracked elements now properly creates and edits only a single entry and reliably displays the information you saved. Story Tracker should be stable now. It is still in beta so please let me know if you encounter other issues. https://www.quatscho.com/ |
| I have added the Story Tracker to the editor on Quatscho. This is in beta right now. What is the Story Tracker? Put simply, it is a robust story outlining tool. Using it, you can plan your stories: - Characters - Relationships between characters - Locations - Objects - Scenes - Plots - Outline - Continuity This will allow you to keep track of all those details in your stories you might otherwise miss. Give it a try and provide feedback on it: https://www.quatscho.com/ |
| Quatscho has a robust Journaling system. You can keep a Journal for your thoughts and it will be organized by date. Journals have several visibility options (per entry): Private: only you can read the entry Protected: only you can read the entry and it is protected by an authentication code. Two-Factor authentication must be enabled on your account for this to work. Friends Only: only you and your friends can read the entry. Selected Members: only you and people you choose can read the entry. Space Members: only you and members of the Space you select can read the entry. Members Only: you and all Quatscho members can read the entry. Public: everyone, including unauthenticated visitors, can read the entry. You can pick from over 500 moods to describe how you are feeling in an entry. There is no limit to how many entries you can post. Feel the need to journal? Go for it! https://www.quatscho.com/ |
