In my view, the primary focus should be on encouraging the writers to write. I do not review items I don't enjoy anymore because I see it as a waste of my time. So, if you get a review from me, I enjoyed reading your work. The amazing thing about this whole process is that reading an inspiring review usually leads to me reading more of a reviewer's work also. So, it's a win-win.

I will not review...

something I do not like. I do not enjoy writing hyper-critical reviews. I do NOT believe that "honesty" is a synonym for "mean." If I see someone being "mean" here on the public reviewing page, in group behaviors, or just acting as a bully I will not send them my reviews. The only exception to that would be judging a site contest - there all items get honest (and hopefully diplomatic) reviews of the work from me with no exceptions.

You posted before I did in the I Write, Decade Edition. It is my pleasure to read and review your blog entry.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I thought about how the Ukraine has been on my mind for days, too. The sunflower is a lovely image to hold in our hearts in hope for better days. I have been following it on the BBC.com, which is calmer and less hysterical than the reporting I see in this country. The British seem to have a good handle on what is going on, as usual.

I think that unlike the 1940s, now people have ways of finding out what is going on. World condemnation will rain down on Putin for what he has done.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I read in the hope for the future. There is no future in the cruelty and violence that the Russians are trying to use to get their way. It is not 1939 and the world is not as naive as they were when Hitler did this sort of thing.

Hope and pray that somehow they find a way to stop Putin and make Ukraine a part of NATO once and for all. I hope it all backfires and the sunflowers bloom all over the world in celebration of the blue and yellow flag of Ukraine.

This is a very moving entry. Where have all the flowers gone, that song comes to mind as I picture those fields of sunflower glory.

Well done! Take heart - The President of Ukraine seems to be a very brave and likable fellow. He will win the hearts and minds of the people, maybe even some of the Russian people who don't go for Putin's antics.

You posted before me in I Write Decade Edition. It is my pleasure to read and review your short story.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

Dealing with grief and worry is such a hard time. Caring for someone else, human or otherwise, is definitely the way to heal, if healing is possible after such a loss.

I am so sorry for the loss suffered as I see this is a non-fiction story.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I am happy for Rosie that she has such an attentive and caring human, who takes joy in her getting acclimated to her new home. She will always know kindness going forward and that is such a blessing.

We had our own blessing of a Basset Hound for more than 14 years. She trained us well. As you probably, already know, they train us not the other way around. She liked us to let her go to sleep early in her later years so she would bark at us if we made noise. That still makes us smile. A lot of what went on does that.

And now, even though we are without our Boo, we have a rescue pup living next door to spoil.

I thought about your determination to succeed. I admire that and I think you are probably well on your way. You have achievable goals that you know you can accomplish. Sounds like a good plan to me!

No expert on keeping my own New Year's Resolutions, I have already broken what little I did make at the beginning of January.

I think mental health is crucial right now so I was struck by your emphasis on giving yourself a pep talk and a push in the right direction to keep things on trace. We all need that now. I really see that all over the place, the sadness.

My criteria for judging Dear Me letters is about what I find memorable and interesting. It may not agree with anyone else's judgment, but I bring my own bag of experiences to the mix. I have always felt that travel was the best collection of experiences in my life. I also enjoy a sense of humor or something that touches me personally.

I thought about your review of last year and all you have been through with heartache and natural disaster. You found your way to forgiveness and that's a big thing that challenges most people in the best of circumstances.

There is much to admire in your achievements and in your focus on the future.

My criteria for judging Dear Me letters is about what I find memorable and interesting. It may not agree with anyone else's judgment. I also enjoy something that touches me personally. I am glad to hear that your family survived the storm and things are hopefully getting back to something approaching normal.

I thought about how much in life is beyond one's control. It's the good deeds that we do that really matter, but trying to change the world seems way beyond the scope of life today.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I thought about the vulnerability we all feel as we age. You make some very good points and have reasoned through a lot of the challenges that come later in life.

It is good to be prepared because we never know what curve balls will be thrown our way.

To have a plan though, and a thorough plan that has considered various eventualities. At least you have thought things through and will not be caught unawares. Life has a way of sneaking up on us at times and it is good to be prepared.

My criteria for judging Dear Me letters is about what I find memorable and interesting. It may not agree with anyone else's judgment. I also enjoy a sense of humor or something that touches me personally.

I like your attitude toward the younger generation, the tolerance and the willingness to listen to their ideas. I think the older we get the more we get set in our ways so it's wonderful to keep an open mind - well done!

As for living close to relations, anyone can move away. I know people who relocated close to their children, only to have the children move away. There are too many variables to count on.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I thought about how I imagine Minneapolis to be now. It is totally a different picture from what I had from visiting there in 2006.

People see things in different ways at different ages. I remember riots in the late 60s. It seemed like it was more of a legitimate upset or maybe living through it more than once changes your perspective.

My city, too, was torn up, but it wasn't the epicenter.

My criteria for judging Dear Me letters is about what I find memorable and interesting. It may not agree with anyone else's judgment. I also admire something that touches me personally.

That is to give you an idea of where I'm coming from in the whole judging realm.

I think in these hard times with everything going on, everyone is somewhat at sea, lost, adrift.

I know that some days I have irrational fears, but they are still there real fears.

Time is the only thing that has ever helped any turmoil or bad situation.

A year is a snapshot in time I guess. I don't know the answers, but I know that a lot of people are feeling a sense of loss right now.

I thought about all your experiences and preparation. The publishing world is like the world of politics. It's about power and manipulation I think.

You posted in the I Write Decade Activity before I did. It is a pleasure to read and review your story.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I think that you took the prompt and soared with it. This is imaginative and engaging as a mysterious stranger gives little to go on and ignites curiosity. It is natural to wonder about someone new who doesn't connect with others.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I liked the subtle reference to climbing the ladder anywhere. You never know who wants to achieve what for what purpose. On here, I've seen it where the climb is rapid only to be followed by a hasty exit once goals are attained.

The slow individual gradually achieves and maybe even wins the race in the end. I know I have been a slow one, but most of the people who passed me by are long gone. I was here for good reasons (to me anyway) that never changed.

Well, we never know who is behind the screen I reckon.

Very interesting story about human nature and privacy, too.

!!! Congrats again for writing a wonderfully engaging story. You asked for a review and I am happy to oblige. I do not review everything because of time constraints, but I did enjoy your tale of an inspiring Christmas!

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I thought about how we sometimes get taught the meaning of things, like Christmas, in ways we might or might not appreciate at the time.

This is a mother who earns respect and love from her children in her heartfelt efforts to reach out to others, who have fallen on hard times.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I honestly loved that the families never met. There is a sensitivity to the fact that maybe the recipients might be ashamed of the fact that their Christmas that year was given from others. It seemed like a the ultimate way of paying it forward to me.

I do not typically give detailed critiques in my reviews. I respect that it is your story and I enjoyed reading it. I don't send a review now unless I enjoy reading the item in question, and sometimes not even then. I did not see any glaring errors to point to. I thought, overall, it was a story well told, with a gentle lesson in life conveyed to the reader.

I am not an expert on writing or anything else, just a grateful reader who appreciates a story well told.

Timeless poetry is that which stands the test of time. The idea of masking takes new prominence in our lives so this is even more true today than it was when you wrote this in 2011, more than a decade ago.

Remarkable vision is shown in this.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

This was my favorite part:

"Learning and wisdom have the power to unmask
Pride and prejudice that block our ascent"

We all hide from inconvenient truths, all the more so when we wear masks. Masks can be real or imagined.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I thought about how unpredictable the father is. But he is trying to teach his sons, not just discipline them.

His honest with one son is commendable and there is even confiding. So, Jake gets the idea that more is going on then meets the eye. Maybe it will carry him through to teach his own kids. It seems like it might be such a moment.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I liked how the ending was satisfying, but unexpected. The father puts more thought into things than his sons appreciate, remembering his own childhood and relationship with his brother.

I liked that the ending wasn't predictable and that some of the problems faced are timeless. Nice work!

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I thought that the use of the name "Gideon" was very appropriate and fitting. Your story is a chilling one that reminds me of a saying about never ask a question if you don't know the answer ahead of time.

You might want to use the last line as your title, if you are so inclined:

"Welcome to the Apocalypse”

I guess the argument against that would be that it might give too much away in the title.

Another title from me would be "Gideon's Lesson"

This is just something to consider as the story is fine as it is, Untitled.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

You build up suspense really well and it is chilling to have an expert suddenly become something else. We count on experts to be objective and give us their opinion. We don't really typically see them as people who act.

They have a decided advantage of knowing the result ahead of time. Way ahead of time.

I enjoyed your story very much.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

The title is good advice to anyone, but sometimes it is the hardest thing to do.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

The key is always time and the passage of time. If we just hang on, it will get easier. I think that is true because time changes how we look at things in subtle ways.

This was my favorite part because of the time reference:

"The cyclic chains of time portend
a rebirth as the seasons mend
together as the clock hands sweep.
Do not despair."

Also, you did a fine job with a difficult form. It flows very well. The more one says to not despair, the more despair one feels, but then suddenly it can lift.

Well, we never know as the future is a mystery. Monty is still here and going strong after a brief hiatus. Things have a way of sorting out of over time. There's that "time" thing again.

Fine work, as always!

I thought about trying to make sense of life and dreams and how they interact. God keeping a watchful eye is comforting, I must admit. That's where you take me in the second stanza, finding a reason or cohesive thread through it all.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

This was my favorite part:

"But, darkness cannot grasp the light;
starry Angels in the night also rising like the sun and setting
with the moon light.

There is an ethereal quality laced in with trying to figure out our dreams. It can be elusive, but rarely there might be clear or not depending on our ability to remember.

Very well written and thoughtful, with effective choice of language in a original and engaging flow. Well done!

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I thought about how a positive outlook can change the way we approach each day or night. To see it as an embrace rather than a daunting challenge is a good start.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I particularly liked the third line of each stanza, in other words, the embrace. I will think of this poem as I go on my journey through the mornings and evenings and I will try to think of it all as a positive embrace.

so here I am to read and send a review. It is always my pleasure to read and review your work.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

To me, this is about taking control of the direction that one's life embarks upon at some point.

What leads me to that is the use of the word "Steering" as the first word of the poem. Of course, the element of good fortune runs through the narrative, the reference to having gas and what is needed to make the journey run smooth.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

The message I get at the end is to rise above the criticism that we all face sooner or later and do one's own thing.

This was my favorite passage:

"where I finally divine and divest
on my Everest to rest
with the stories I'll sing."

I enjoyed it all. Directionally, one could not ask for a better resolution to a journey that we might control or we might not. It's definitely a question to be asked.

I thought about times I had the same thing happen because I was over confident. The best test results (for me) came when I was nervous and unsure of how well I could do. It made me double check everything, which is the lesson learned here - to make sure of the answers.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I especially liked the ending and that a congratulation was extended to the friend. And ice cream is always good for the soul.

This is an intriguing idea. The title fits what develops here.

I think that a lot fades over time, but it is interesting to think that even guilt takes on a different form.

I would recommend double spacing between paragraphs to make the reading easier on the eyes. That's more related to personal preference (mine) than anything else.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading
your item?

I was interested in the notion that there is no going back once something is set in motion. It just gets repeated endlessly through time somehow so that the tragedy and meaning of life gets lost in the mix.

As a reader, I'm left with the notion that at least the protagonist tried, again and again apparently.

Your story is short, but well told. Nice work.

This is thoughtful and engaging. I had to look up salutary to find out it means "unwelcome". There weren't a lot of words, but what you had here, and the title, required me to use my brain.

Hard lessons are the best ones.

I like the message and the idea that it is coming from the cemetery. Who would know better?
