In my view, the primary focus should be on encouraging the writers to write. I do not review items I don't enjoy anymore because I see it as a waste of my time. So, if you get a review from me, I enjoyed reading your work. The amazing thing about this whole process is that reading an inspiring review usually leads to me reading more of a reviewer's work also. So, it's a win-win.

I will not review...

something I do not like. I do not enjoy writing hyper-critical reviews. I do NOT believe that "honesty" is a synonym for "mean." If I see someone being "mean" here on the public reviewing page, in group behaviors, or just acting as a bully I will not send them my reviews. The only exception to that would be judging a site contest - there all items get honest (and hopefully diplomatic) reviews of the work from me with no exceptions.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I think that difficult times and events can cause one to reflect more than the person might do otherwise. This can lead to discoveries about others or oneself that might be very difficult. I do see that it is true that stress and trials can lead to revelations that might or might not be pleasant, but are nevertheless informative.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I like especially, that you say how you deal with discoveries like this is a choice and not something that is forced or predetermined. The individual must choose whether to turn it into something positive, no matter how negative things might seem at the time.

See the positive and grab a lifeline or sink into a self-absorbed pool of regret and pain.

Very thoughtful and engaging poem.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I liked especially, the repeated refrain of "Though I distrust," "Though I disclaim," and "Though I disdain".

I think you show your character development through these words. There is an acceptance, as you explain, but there is also tremendous underlying disillusion and disappointment conveyed.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I like how the character's ruminations lead to taking charge and being the one to "end this game." There is a detachment from the horror and and strengthening that permeates the mood.

There is a definite struggle, but not a defeat. Thus, the title fits the new resolve.

You definitely paint a picture with your words so your poem is aptly titled.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

This proves you don't need a lot of words to convey the feeling of a time of year (or anything else really) to your readers. It is particularly effective in using the shining sun to emphasize how cold it is.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

Entertaining the young can be very challenging. I find it is more fun as a grandparent than a parent. It is always good to suggest that they entertain themselves, but we end up playing their game and singing to their tune.

Oh, what memories are created in the playing of the game, though.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

How can they be bored when they are constantly entertained, I wonder?

This was very amusing and it made me smile. How many times have I heard someone say, "I'm bored" as if I am their entertainment director, I wonder.

Very well captured and Chutes and Ladders (as well as Candyland) has solved a lot of boring afternoon adventures.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

This is a nice, observational way of introducing young characters. I liked the description of Ja-Ja. I could picture a hopping alligator with bunny ears.

It sounds cute.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I like how the friends stick together through changes and life adventures. It sounds like they are always ready to help each other. Anakin has a lot to learn, but she will help him to be a good student when she can. Padme seems more mature, but girls usually are ahead of boys that way.

I got that feeling anyway. I enjoyed reading this very much!

I posted after you in the I Write Activity, hosted by Aennaytte: Free & Wild in GoT

. It is always a pleasure to read your words. Usually, I see you on the newsfeed, which I enjoy very much, although I rarely comment these days. I am more into reading and thinking then commenting now.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I thought about how traveling is so good for the mind and soul.

You have honed your craft to the point that you are comfortable with your own style. That takes time and dedication. I am sure that your listeners learn a lot.

Of course, I enjoyed hearing about your get-together with the Writing.Com family. How wonderful. Back in the early 2000s, when I lived in the DC area still I got to meet quite a few people from here in person. Most aren't here any more, but it was very enjoyable.

Do it while you are all still young and can enjoy it, I say.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I think it's the celebratory spirit that permeates of getting on with life and enjoyment post Covid. I used to travel and love it. Now, I am afraid of it and just about everything else I guess. LoL. It's nice to live vicariously through your words here and imagine meeting up with such nice friends.

Who knows what adventures you all will have in the future?! Be sure and write about them so we can enjoy and imagine through your words.

I saw your poem featured in this week's Poetry Newsletter and came to read. Congratulations on being selected in the newsletter!

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

What a wonderful poem about the many fascinating aspects of the sea and the goddess who keeps it all so safe and preserves the memories over time.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I particularly liked the timelessness and references to history and the Titanic and all the things that have transpired on the sea and that the goddess has watched over for as long as there has been time. She is the one constant who never changes as the sea ebbs and flows around her.

You posted before I did in the I Write, Decade Edition. It is my pleasure to read and review your blog entry.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I thought about how the Ukraine has been on my mind for days, too. The sunflower is a lovely image to hold in our hearts in hope for better days. I have been following it on the BBC.com, which is calmer and less hysterical than the reporting I see in this country. The British seem to have a good handle on what is going on, as usual.

I think that unlike the 1940s, now people have ways of finding out what is going on. World condemnation will rain down on Putin for what he has done.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I read in the hope for the future. There is no future in the cruelty and violence that the Russians are trying to use to get their way. It is not 1939 and the world is not as naive as they were when Hitler did this sort of thing.

Hope and pray that somehow they find a way to stop Putin and make Ukraine a part of NATO once and for all. I hope it all backfires and the sunflowers bloom all over the world in celebration of the blue and yellow flag of Ukraine.

This is a very moving entry. Where have all the flowers gone, that song comes to mind as I picture those fields of sunflower glory.

Well done! Take heart - The President of Ukraine seems to be a very brave and likable fellow. He will win the hearts and minds of the people, maybe even some of the Russian people who don't go for Putin's antics.

You posted before me in I Write Decade Edition. It is my pleasure to read and review your short story.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

Dealing with grief and worry is such a hard time. Caring for someone else, human or otherwise, is definitely the way to heal, if healing is possible after such a loss.

I am so sorry for the loss suffered as I see this is a non-fiction story.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I am happy for Rosie that she has such an attentive and caring human, who takes joy in her getting acclimated to her new home. She will always know kindness going forward and that is such a blessing.

We had our own blessing of a Basset Hound for more than 14 years. She trained us well. As you probably, already know, they train us not the other way around. She liked us to let her go to sleep early in her later years so she would bark at us if we made noise. That still makes us smile. A lot of what went on does that.

And now, even though we are without our Boo, we have a rescue pup living next door to spoil.

I thought about your determination to succeed. I admire that and I think you are probably well on your way. You have achievable goals that you know you can accomplish. Sounds like a good plan to me!

My criteria for judging Dear Me letters is about what I find memorable and interesting. It may not agree with anyone else's judgment. I also enjoy a sense of humor or something that touches me personally.

That is to give you an idea of where I'm coming from in the whole judging realm.

No expert on keeping my own New Year's Resolutions, I have already broken what little I did make at the beginning of January.

So, I'm also looking to be inspired with my own plans for continuing this year.

I admire you for the determined way you word your letter. I would say it is determined and encouraging.

I think mental health is crucial right now so I was struck by your emphasis on giving yourself a pep talk and a push in the right direction to keep things on trace. We all need that now. I really see that all over the place, the sadness.

My criteria for judging Dear Me letters is about what I find memorable and interesting. It may not agree with anyone else's judgment, but I bring my own bag of experiences to the mix. I have always felt that travel was the best collection of experiences in my life. I also enjoy a sense of humor or something that touches me personally.

I thought about your review of last year and all you have been through with heartache and natural disaster. You found your way to forgiveness and that's a big thing that challenges most people in the best of circumstances.

There is much to admire in your achievements and in your focus on the future.

My criteria for judging Dear Me letters is about what I find memorable and interesting. It may not agree with anyone else's judgment. I also enjoy something that touches me personally. I am glad to hear that your family survived the storm and things are hopefully getting back to something approaching normal.

I thought about how much in life is beyond one's control. It's the good deeds that we do that really matter, but trying to change the world seems way beyond the scope of life today.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I thought about the vulnerability we all feel as we age. You make some very good points and have reasoned through a lot of the challenges that come later in life.

It is good to be prepared because we never know what curve balls will be thrown our way.

To have a plan though, and a thorough plan that has considered various eventualities. At least you have thought things through and will not be caught unawares. Life has a way of sneaking up on us at times and it is good to be prepared.

My criteria for judging Dear Me letters is about what I find memorable and interesting. It may not agree with anyone else's judgment. I also enjoy a sense of humor or something that touches me personally.

I like your attitude toward the younger generation, the tolerance and the willingness to listen to their ideas. I think the older we get the more we get set in our ways so it's wonderful to keep an open mind - well done!

As for living close to relations, anyone can move away. I know people who relocated close to their children, only to have the children move away. There are too many variables to count on.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I thought about how I imagine Minneapolis to be now. It is totally a different picture from what I had from visiting there in 2006.

People see things in different ways at different ages. I remember riots in the late 60s. It seemed like it was more of a legitimate upset or maybe living through it more than once changes your perspective.

My city, too, was torn up, but it wasn't the epicenter.

My criteria for judging Dear Me letters is about what I find memorable and interesting. It may not agree with anyone else's judgment. I also admire something that touches me personally.

That is to give you an idea of where I'm coming from in the whole judging realm.

No expert on keeping my own New Year's Resolutions, I have already broken what little I did make.

So, I'm also looking to be inspired with my own plans for continuing this year. Maybe sorting through things is the way to go instead of avoidance behaviors.

I think in these hard times with everything going on, everyone is somewhat at sea, lost, adrift.

I know that some days I have irrational fears, but they are still there real fears.

Time is the only thing that has ever helped any turmoil or bad situation.

A year is a snapshot in time I guess. I don't know the answers, but I know that a lot of people are feeling a sense of loss right now.

I thought about all those minions. Wow, that is a lot of work, but I bet you have lots of writing inspiration with such a range of experience.

My criteria for judging Dear Me letters is about what I find memorable and interesting. It may not agree with anyone else's judgment. I also enjoy a sense of humor or something that touches me personally.

I loved that you had a humorous take on your letter.

That is to give you an idea of where I'm coming from in the whole judging realm.

No expert on keeping my own New Year's Resolutions, I have already broken what little I did make.

So, I'm also looking to be inspired with my own plans for continuing this year.

I thought about your emphasis on fiction. You know what you want to include in your life and you have many ways of enjoying the creativity that confronts you.

I especially admire that you were smart about the timing of the Dear Me Letter. You had already swung into action for a month when you penned this. I think that strategy has a lot of merit. I might try it next year.

I thought about how well organized this is. Concise and well organized goals seem like a good start to the year to me. I can see where you can refer back to this and easily see how you are doing and where some work is needed.

Wow, that's quite a list. You can cross off entering a W.Com contest with your fine and detailed entry.

My criteria for judging Dear Me letters is about what I find memorable and interesting. It may not agree with anyone else's judgment. I also enjoy a sense of humor or something that touches me personally. You have a good attitude about things and I admire that and your ambition.

You posted in the I Write Decade Activity before I did. It is a pleasure to read and review your story.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I think that you took the prompt and soared with it. This is imaginative and engaging as a mysterious stranger gives little to go on and ignites curiosity. It is natural to wonder about someone new who doesn't connect with others.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I liked the subtle reference to climbing the ladder anywhere. You never know who wants to achieve what for what purpose. On here, I've seen it where the climb is rapid only to be followed by a hasty exit once goals are attained.

The slow individual gradually achieves and maybe even wins the race in the end. I know I have been a slow one, but most of the people who passed me by are long gone. I was here for good reasons (to me anyway) that never changed.

Well, we never know who is behind the screen I reckon.

Very interesting story about human nature and privacy, too.

You were the winner today in "The Writer's Cramp"

!!! Congrats again for writing a wonderfully engaging story. You asked for a review and I am happy to oblige. I do not review everything because of time constraints, but I did enjoy your tale of an inspiring Christmas!

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I thought about how we sometimes get taught the meaning of things, like Christmas, in ways we might or might not appreciate at the time.

This is a mother who earns respect and love from her children in her heartfelt efforts to reach out to others, who have fallen on hard times.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I honestly loved that the families never met. There is a sensitivity to the fact that maybe the recipients might be ashamed of the fact that their Christmas that year was given from others. It seemed like a the ultimate way of paying it forward to me.

I do not typically give detailed critiques in my reviews. I respect that it is your story and I enjoyed reading it. I don't send a review now unless I enjoy reading the item in question, and sometimes not even then. I did not see any glaring errors to point to. I thought, overall, it was a story well told, with a gentle lesson in life conveyed to the reader.

I am not an expert on writing or anything else, just a grateful reader who appreciates a story well told.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

Timeless poetry is that which stands the test of time. The idea of masking takes new prominence in our lives so this is even more true today than it was when you wrote this in 2011, more than a decade ago.

Remarkable vision is shown in this.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

This was my favorite part:

"Learning and wisdom have the power to unmask
Pride and prejudice that block our ascent"

We all hide from inconvenient truths, all the more so when we wear masks. Masks can be real or imagined.

I clicked on the Read and Review option on the left side of the screen and it brought me to your short story. It is my pleasure to read and send my thoughts on to you.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I thought about how unpredictable the father is. But he is trying to teach his sons, not just discipline them.

His honest with one son is commendable and there is even confiding. So, Jake gets the idea that more is going on then meets the eye. Maybe it will carry him through to teach his own kids. It seems like it might be such a moment.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I liked how the ending was satisfying, but unexpected. The father puts more thought into things than his sons appreciate, remembering his own childhood and relationship with his brother.

I liked that the ending wasn't predictable and that some of the problems faced are timeless. Nice work!

I clicked on the Rate and Review option on the left side of the screen and it brought me to your fine short story. It is my pleasure to read and send a review.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I thought that the use of the name "Gideon" was very appropriate and fitting. Your story is a chilling one that reminds me of a saying about never ask a question if you don't know the answer ahead of time.

You might want to use the last line as your title, if you are so inclined:

"Welcome to the Apocalypse”

I guess the argument against that would be that it might give too much away in the title.

Another title from me would be "Gideon's Lesson"

This is just something to consider as the story is fine as it is, Untitled.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

You build up suspense really well and it is chilling to have an expert suddenly become something else. We count on experts to be objective and give us their opinion. We don't really typically see them as people who act.

They have a decided advantage of knowing the result ahead of time. Way ahead of time.
