Review of Shep-herd

I enjoyed this allegorical story about how dogs emerged from wolves to guard sheep. The story is set in an idyllic time when animals and humans can talk to each other and shepherd Jordie is sat playing his flute when the sheep tell him that a wolf cub has been nominated to help him guard them. I thought this story was a creative and memorable explanation and it made a fun read.

Review of MEMORIES

This is a moving and meaningful poem about the bond between an owner and a pet. I enjoyed the way that it was not revealed until later that it was a pet that you spoke about because it shows how a pet can be a friend just like a human being and this is often something people who do not own pets do not understand, so you did well in showing what a good friend Mittens was.

I loved the creative titles and mottoes perfect for a fantasy world and found it hard to choose between them. When I made my choice of House of Oakheart (based on my dog being called Oakley) I was surprised to see this was the leading choice so far. I would have thought the ‘Let it be written’ motto would be leading.

This looks a fun and popular raffle activity. The dog merit badge is very cute and full of character, plus I smiled at the cartoon of a man who announces that he has won a grass strimmer when it is actually a goat that he has won and therefore more likely to cause more mayhem and trouble than a grass mowing machine!

The wicker sofa and the memories were described in such detail I felt transported into this story as I could both picture and hear the sounds in the scene. The wicker sofa shows the power of an object to be invested with memories as it holds the stories your grandfather told of his life as a boxer and in the navy, plus memories of going fishing with him. It sounded a comfortable place to sit any time of day and comfortable too with the big flowery cushions.

Review of WDC Dragon Vale

This is a fun and beautifully put together page. I loved the wording which opened like a mythic fantasy tale. The pictures of the dragons, trinkets and explanation of how to move through the ranks like a dragon tamer in a game made this an exciting read. A lot of work has learly gone into crafting this activity.

Review of Flower Field

I love this vividly imagined story full of the beauty of the unexpected. The contrast between a heavy winter snow and opening to door to find colourful flower meadows worked especially well. I like how you captured the surreal feel of a dream as the narrator enjoys meeting Elisa and Madeline and spending time in their peaceful, beautiful world. Although neither of the girls speak until the snowflake falls, signalling the narrator to awake, this is taken for granted in the dream world. I enjoyed the twist at the end where the flower ring was real.

Some suggestions:
There is a comma and then a capital F for Frost, you should either put a full stop instead of the comma or make the f a small letter.
‘! how’ sound be capitalised: ‘How’
‘purple-ish’ has a capital i by mistake.
At the end it should be ‘flower ring laid on top of my coffee table’

What I liked best:
This is a meaningful moral tale about a woman working as a governess and the little boy she takes care of breaking a precious vase. This leads to a lot of upset as the mother slaps the boy and the governess ultimately is told to leave. I felt for both characters having such a hard parent to deal with as the boy bonded well with the governess.

A suggestion:
I was confused here:
Little John's chick.-"She is your parent, John."

What do you mean by tears flowing from the little boy's chick?
I think the bit about "She is your parent" should be on another line and spoken by the governess?

An incredibly beautifully written story — each line is full of vivid, poetic descriptions of the library and Jasper’s life and character in a way that immersed the reader. I could smell the musty air of the library and see the old man sat at his desk. I enjoyed how the tone changes from one of decay to energy as the elderly Jasper reignites the legacy of his storyteller grandfather by choosing a different mode to tell his story than the written word — clay! I wondered what the story he was about to tell was about and this left me intrigued to know more as the build up to this moment was strong.

I enjoyed looking at the wonderful pictures of you and your cats in this campfire. Bella and Tigger look so cosy sat with you in the pictures and Tigger watching over you with angel wings was nicely captured in the picture. Wishing you a very Happy Easter!

Review of A Prince's Vow

This was a very emotional piece showing the meaning of love and memory. I like how you adopted the traditional tone of a fairytale as the prince learns lessons in how to truly love from the knight. Tragically, soon after he gets closer to the knight through his gifts and taking him on a date, the knight dies. In a memorbale twist it is revealed by the inscription on the statue of the knight that the knight loved the prince afterall and watches over him after his death.

This is an interesting poem that uses the subject of the changing seasons to reflect on a relationship. It shows a very creative use of form, for example, drawing out the letters of slowly to suggest a long time passing. I liked the repetition in the first stanza keeping the poem together and the way the form changes in the final stanza, reflecting the change in the realtionship.

This is a creative and memorable twist on the dragon and dragon slayer tale. Here the Slayer has become bonded to the dragon as a mate through spilling each others' blood, and the dragon reveals this in her thoughts towards the end of the story. The writing style was good and the pace worked well. The only thing I would alter is have a reason for the Slayer to see him pupils widening, such as a reflection in a puddle of water, as otherwise he wouldn't notive this from his point of view.

This is a very romantic and meaningful poem about self-worth, art and understanding true love. I liked how the poem expresses how an artist can be inspired by and love someone because of their appreciation of them as they truly look deeply at the person. The ending about fingers entwining was a nice image and made me think of paintbrushes or a pen held by the artitist.

Angel does some lovely posters, I thought I'd pop by to enjoy looking at and reviewing another of her pictures. You are fortunate to have such a talented art designer as a friend. This picture is more traditional as it shows Alice in a blue dress but again it is excellent at capturing textures, such as the soft fabric and fluffy cat and rabbit. The old fashioned clocks were a nice touch.

I enjoyed this characterful and clearly well researched historical story. The different perspectives worked well and were clearly characterised, enabling readers to understand the perspective of both royal lovers. I enjoyed the colourful historical setting of the palace and the growing love between George and Charlotte. It was nice that you made an allusion to Romeo and Juliet when they first kiss, adding a playful and learned note to the dialogue that was in keeping with the time period and status of the characters.

Review of Arthur's Return

What a brilliant and vividly imagined story! I felt very much transported into King Arthur's world and I liked how well the story stayed in his point of view and developed a clear and convincing voice for him as a character, especially when contrasted to modern characters like Kay. I enjoyed the moments where he reacts to his past life and current call to return from Avalon as prophesied, plus the action as he fights the beast attacking modern day Cornwall.
The piece shows a detailed knowledge of Arthurian legends. To make it understandable to readers who perhaps have not read different legends, perhaps you could explain why you use both Morgan and Morgana for Arthur's sister and speak of Arthur as the Red Dragon of Prophecy to avoid any confusion?

This poem captures the joy of freshly cut grass in May and the blessings warmer weather brings. You made a nice use of poetic form, especially internal rhymes. Focusing on the delicious smell of fresh cut grass made the situation in the poem easy to relate to.

I was excited to discover this story as I enjoy tales of King Arthur and his kinghts. You did a great job of including material from the tradition tales and investing it with originality. Clearly you have done a lot of research into the legends and history of the time and this showed through. Good luck with completing the rest of the story and getting it published. If this is a first draft you may well find you could expand this chapter into more chapters as you could add in more details to the time span you covered.

This is such a cute picture. I love the fluffy texture of the Cheshire Cat and rabbit, plus the gorgeous crown of roses on Alice's head. The teapot with the watch in it looked very in keeping with the story. I like how Alice's traditional costume got a revamp with a pink dres to fit the flowers.

This is a well written and interesting opening to your novel, setting the scene and the stakes in an intriguing was and hinting at the plot and main characters. I like how it opened in the middle of action and the you used the discussion with Father William to introduce key plot details that take Father William by surprise, such as Queen Gwendolyn being in love with Andre and hints that Longshanks might not be trustworthy as he is motivated by payment.

I enjoyed the strong and fitting sense of voice of a ruler of Empires that you captured in Calus's monologue. The contrast of the dramatic events deciding the fate of the empire in the past as Calus reminiscences were set well in contrast to the traquil atmosphere of the pool where he now sits. I enjoyed the contrast and thought at the end it might be strenghted if he saw lights glittering on the water and this prompts the thoughts of forging a new path among the stars in future. A great start to a story about an epic world!

I thought the name Skrie Tripfoot was perfect for a halfling. The tragedy of the inn with her parents and sister? being killed made me feel for her, especially as the folk around her were callous. The melting pot of people from different cultures in the area snd the conflict between them was believably portrayed and motivated the plot of the inn being burned. I hope the butcher and his like will learn to be more neighbourly after Skrie’s cutting reaction to the way they hurt her.

This is a fun poll and I found it hard to choose between the options. They all sound like things dragons would enjoy. It was good and insightful to see the WDC voters have picked helpful and peacekeeping choices for their dragon selves with creating safe passages for travellers topping the list.

Review of Weary Warrior

This story has a brilliant and funny twist at the end when it is revealed that the weary warrior is actually a tooth in the mouth of someone losing teeth due to age. The figurative language that you use is original and made this piece a delight to read. It took on a riddle like quality and drew me on to discover more about the situation of the warrior tooth!
