I am 23 years old and do not have children however I can understand the values of the things you mention here. I am floored actually, by the uncanny way you've explained your unique perspective. Not very many writers can convey the message as clearly as you have.
There's a phrase that I'll work into one of my pieces, before I add it here, and it's a scene between four characters.
"We've lost him." one character would say, while the other would reply "We never had him." watching the man in question, consume a woman with his eyes.
Your poem brings that thought to my mind, because it's exactly the feeling I get. A man seeing something, wanting it, taking it, to only discover that it was never really his to begin with.
We do that with many things in life, I think. Caging birds because of their beautiful colors, but in the end destroying them because they weren't meant to be caged.
