"Blue Tuesday" reminds me of the many stories I hear (and have witnessed, in fact) about an elderly who believes her daughter was due to visit her as it is Tuesday. At 97, Mrs. Harper seems to be just like another mother, awaiting a visitor. It is a very sad tale indeed, and it is a story that can be repeated in many more homes for the elderly. The one blessed thing to remember is, Mrs. Harper can still feel the joy of a visit from a daughter.

"Cold As Ice WC: 208" is a very short tale of two different opinions: that of "Dawn's" and that of "George's" sbout "Monica". It is rather interesting for Dawn to break up with George just because she thinks he voiced his opinion regarding Monica. Dawn must have felt "hurt" for George to criticize her long-time friend, Monica. As a result, she gave back the ring to George as she said, "I can't marry someone cold as ice." George, however, was obviously surprised when he said, "Me and my big mouth."

My question is: Did Dawn take it as a criticism of her as George strongly expressed his frustration with Monica's friendship with her? It was wise of George to express his opinion; however, Dawn took it the wrong way; and that's when the ring came off Dawn's finger and was slid across the table to George. Interesting turn of events!!!!!!!

"Child Being Introduced to Christianity" is a short tale of a girl who wanted to learn if "... there is a God out there." She tried becoming a christian as well as learning all about the 10 Commandments and others relating to becoming a christian. In the end, she realized "Everyone was possessed with the spirit except for me and I wondered why nothing happened to me." It seems the girl was not at all interested in learning about God, about Sunday school, about the 10 Commandments as well as other things related to becoming a christian. Is this child just another kid who has no interest in anything that would become part of her life?

The "Inheritance" tells of "Annie" as she began "Emptying Gran's house..." her thoughts were happy because she knew her inheritance was going to "allow her to get a better apartment" as well as "get a better job". As she rested, she finished a puzzle that turned out to be her face. As she awoke from a short nap, she thought she saw her grandmother and heard her saying, "It's time for you to take your rightful place in our coven!"

The passing of one's loved one creates a feeling of sadness as well as of happy thoughts. As one remembers the loved one, it brings back memories that sometimes makes one regretful.

Review of Bloody Mary

This tale, "Bloody Mary", tells of two students who did not believe about standing "...at the mirror" in the dark and whisper, "Bloody Mary" three times upon which "...she would appear in the mirror, reach out, and steal your soul." However, while both students were in the school bathroom, Susan did stand at "the mirror and whispered three times," upon which the story teller saw Susan as "she lay dead on the floor. To this day, I won't stand in front of a mirror in the dark."

There are stories and many more beliefs that students tend to find and tend to believe as well. However, the experience of seeing Susan dead after whispering "Bloody Mary" three timess actually led to the story teller saying that he would never "stand in front of a mirror in the dark."

At this point, we realize that the story teller is one of those who believe about "Bloody Mary" stealing one's soul. Like any other reader, I tend to laugh in disbelief...

"Love Unending" feels like a threat; however, "she" is out of his reach and again enjoying her modeling. "She" "had moved on", out of his reach and enjoying life again. Bully for her. Her past life that included "bruised skin, the broken bones" are now but a memory, a mere part of her nightmares that no longer affect her. She is alive now, a whole life with a bright future in modeling. "Yes, she had moved on."

I wonder why love becomes hateful and turns into "bruised skin, the broken bones"?

Review of The Vacation

Reading "The Vacation" reminded me of evil men I heard about in my growing up years; men who appear kind and friendly but turn out to be evil as told by the elderly people in my village. Thinking about it, I realize that this tale is almost as real as the stories I have heard many, many years ago. The author brought back the fear that I used to feel as a young girl.

This tale of a young woman's vacation does impress upon readers (like me) the realisation that "Celeste" has grown up learning and picking up her father's strength of character. She did not panicked when "Phillipe" "...grabbed her ankle" and proceeded to pull her. Even as she was fearful, she managed to climb out of the hole; proceeded the next day to tell the police of her experience, and became the heroine when she took the police where "Phillipe" was found with "his bloodied face and sightless eyes".

I wish I can leave my world and live in "The Mythical Village of Luna". I would love to be protected by dragons and by mermaids so that I can live in peace and quiet, away from the noise that bothers my eardrums and let me enjoy a life without fear and anxiety.

This piece of writing sends my spirits wanting for such a world, a place of contentment and without worries; a place where I can think and write as much as I wish. But alas, such a place is nothing but a dream. However, it is thanks to the author, reading about such a place has given me a chance to search for it.

Review of Mermaids are real

As I reviewed "Mermaids are real", I told myself that mermaids are not real. As a child, I did remember telling myself that mermaids are not real; that they are merely an idea, a thought that sprouted from a writer's mind. And of course, I still believe mermaids are not real at all. However, again, to my surprise, it became apparent that mermaids are real as depicted in this short tale. Only because of one person's remarks that mermaids are real because they get pregnant.

I am therefore referring to the remarks of one "Dione" whose "last word" referred to a pregnant mermaid, which would have been impossible if the mermaid was merely an idea or a thought. The students were definitely convinced of the reality of a mermaid because one author wrote about one who became pregnant. Interesting, indeed.

Review of American ways

As I reviewed the "American ways", I realized the author's bright idea of a comparison between a practice in Eastern Europe with that of the American way. To a grandfather who was recently admitted into America, he realized that in order to "get success" he must "get up and get it yourself". Upon his admission, the grandfather decided to go into "a cafeteria in lower Manhattan" and have something to eat. As he sat on a table waiting for someone to get his order, the grandfather observed "a woman with a tray full of food" and who further informed him that "if you wait for people to serve you, you will wait forever."

For example, I do like the way the author suggested that "a good cafeteria will offer you a wide range of delicious food to choose from" but that "The options are there before us" and that it is one's choice to "grab hold of what we want before it is too late!"

"Wish I wasn't born" got me thinking: why did a girl disappear after she "got into the best Medical University..."? At the start of this short tale, here is a girl who is trying really hard to please her parents. However, one day when she got home and heard a conversation between her parents, she realized that making her parents happy was actually not what she wanted to do.

As I read this short tale, I, too, realized that as children we are bound to try and make our parents happy. However, like this girl we come to realize that making others haqppy is actually not the purporse why we try to do our best. I definitely would not blame the girl for disappearing because I believe she wanted to be happy for herself. And I do not really blame her.

Review of Neighbourhood

"Neighborhood" is a tale of memories that reminded Sam and Sarah the many years they spent in a neighborhood some where in a countryside. Their life together were spent with numerous experiences of "laughter and drama." It was a neighborhood that began with one house built by Sam to shelter his wife and children. The neighborhood grew with many more newcomers who made up the 50 years of a countryside, where neighbors shared joys and tears. Though many changes happened during the 50 years the couple spent in the neighborhood, they realised they were happy "whether alone or in a crowd."

The human interest in this tale is strong and admirable. Experiences were shared, tears were shed with and for each neighbor, and happiness were shared. Is it a dream of pure joy?

To the author of "The Spotlight Effect", I would like to assure you that your experience with regard to "... there is more to life than what other people think of me..." First, I would you to know that ever since I was a child, I knew all along that I am a shy child. Throughout my young years, and for that matter, even at the present time, I have always wondered what people think of me when they see me or talk to me. In school, I would rather show my ability to spell, read, or for that matter, write, by simply writing it all down on paper. I always think people think of me as "nothing" but just another face, and an ugly face at that. I am incoherent when I answer questions from my teachers since I first attended school at 7 years old. I remember even my classmates have no time for me; and for that, I have always thought was because I am nothing at all, just a caricature of myself. The shyness in me prevents me from joining a debating club because I am unable to stand up and talk without "cringing" or feeling sick to my stomach. Do people really think of me as "ugly"?????

So, there you are. Shyness is deep within me; takes away my desire to talk and speak. However, I can write and write and write without a feeling of distress. Now if I was talking to you in person, you would probably think of me as a mouse because I just cannot speak out without feeling sick to my stomach.

Your piece of work sends a message to others who are able to see and read it. That is why I read it because that is "me" you are writing about in your "The Spotlight Effect".

Review of The long night

"The long night" tells us of "Phyllis" who had fallen on the bathroom floor when she rushed to answer the telephone's ring. She was "exhausted by hours of screaming for help" as well as "berating herself for her stupidity." As she lay on the cold bathroom floor, her thoughts wandered, remembering the death of her husband some years ago as well as the birth of her daughter, who insisted she wears a "safety alarm" around her neck and never take it off. However, she began to shiver, her "breathing was shallow" and her last thoughts were of John who was probably was on the telephone, needing her help to find his wallet. As she "no longer feeling the cold, just a terrible thirst", Phyllis "stepped up to the light and grabbed" John's hand.

The trajedy of Phyllis is one of the many ways that death happens to any family. Like any other elderly, she thought she was capable; however, falling and the inability of the fallen person to get off the floor is one case of an accident that do happen. There are many cases of this kind of accident; and still most of our elderly do die because of "accidents" in the home. Many elderly, I believe, are aware of accidents that may happen to them; yet they manage somehow to become an "accident" in their own home.

As I reviewed "How it feels to be guilty", I realized that the writer was expressing his thoughts through a series of incidents that occurred, that somehow made him "feel guilty". It is understandable that feelings of guilt do happen to people, either because they think they do not deserve the treatment. However, I believe that feelings of embarrassment do happen because some people have a strong sense of gratitude in their hearts.

When we accept the generosity of others, we get feelings that we do not deserve such generosity; and then we realize that the best thing to do is to express our gratitude to those people who are as happy to provide us with what they believe is their way to connect with us/ others. In short feelings of guilt are sometimes a natural way to happily accept what is given to us...

"The Stranger's Gift" is a wonderful work of writing. I would call it an art because I felt a sense of "togetherness" with a girl who, in her "daydreaming", realized she was after all "beautiful".

This short tale is a work of art, an expression of wonder that is brought about by "a pair of man's shoes" when she danced on her way home from school. It is a girl's realization that she is, after all, "beautiful" inspite that she thinks of herself as a "parish poor" as well as "the girl who wore hand me down uniforms and second hand shoes". On the one day she walked home, she realized she "was beautiful" when a stranger danced with her and complimented her with, "Thanks, Beautiful, for the dance."

I have been reviewing other writers' works lately, and this short piece brought to mind how one simple thank you from a stranger brings and gives joy and happiness to another. Are we like that man as we, too, walk home from school??????

"Revenge" is a tale of one man who felt "cheated", which I believe may have been the reason he decides to kill her, when his wife left him; a man who believes he must kill the wife who left him for another. It is rather a shame or rather pitiful that one man would actually kill the wife who replaced him. This man must have gone through a lot of thinking to finally decide to kill his wife. Did he feel cheated? Why did he think he had the right to kill his wife? What kind of a man decides to get rid of his wife? Did he think or probably believes he has the right to kill because the wife is his and he definitely believes his wife is his, and that she must be gotten rid of for breaking their marriage? There are numerous questions why this man decides to kill; however, I believe it does not give him the right to kill. We, of course, assume he was hurt; that his wife did break her marriage promise to love her husband until she dies; and because of the promise one makes as a marriage vow.

In life, there are many, many ways a wife and/or a husband get to a situation as a result of which they break up. There are also many, many ways by which a husband, and for that matter a wife, must realize that killing one's partner is his or her right when their married life is broken. Does this man really did not realize that he would be found out (or will be accused) as the killer due to using his own tie to kill his wife?

I would agree with the "Native American" who longed for the past. Although "The Way of the Future" tells of the "majestic modern construct" that was "dominating the landscape" as well as the deep yearning of one "proud Native American" "for the past", I realized the sadness of one person as he viewed and longed "for the past".

When one person realizes the changes that are happening in his own backyard, like losing the wide spaces that gave him pride, he/she begins to yearn for the past, the past that gave him/her vast spaces upon which he/she are able to appreciate and love. This kind of deep longing becomes the very thing that would make a person wish he/she was back in the past.

The large changes that happen to people, and the deep yearning for the past, are things that are brought about by modernizing as well as the need to gain more material things. It is indeed a pity that people lose their sense of belonging because of their need to grow...

"It Is What It Is" is a short tale of old Mr. Pottle, who thinks of gardening but decides to have a cup of tea first. Then he falls asleep, awakens and decides to clean the chimney. With another look at his garden, he decides finally to shuffle "to the back door to unlock it." However, "the heavens opened, pouring with rain". With that Mr. Pottle "thought, it is what it is, and went to put the kettle on."

What a wise old man, Mr. Pottle is!!!!!!!!

"Bigger Fish to Fry: Circa 1958 WC 247" is a short tale of final exams in school. In this tale, "Sarah Broadhurst" was one of the pupils in "Mrs. Abbott's" class, taking the final exam. She noticed two of the other students sharing their answers, which she thought was not allowed. However, as she looked out of the window, she saw "a huge mushroom cloud on the horizon", she decided to crawl "under her desk", and uttered a prayer. It dawned on her "that she would get another chance to eat fried fish"; and that "Mrs. Abbott's class had much bigger fish to fry than a stupid math test".

Sarah realized the meaning of the mushroom cloud; and therefore, in her mind, the test became just a passing experience because there is a chance for her "to heat fried fish". This tale tells us how a girl becomes to realize how ridiculous it was to envy the other two classmates who shared the exam answers; and that all she had thoughts of was "she would get another chance to eat fried fish." Would a reader of this tale learn something from Sarah's action and thoughts?

"Remembrance Day W/C 393" is a short tale of a girl, "Mandy", who keeps her room filled "with all matter of junk". Also, she leaves her drawers open so that her cat has a place to sleep, resulting in the discovery of dead kittens. Somehow, it was decided that drawers are now to be closed; and that the dead kittens are buried, so that Mandy would remember the day of the burial, which is "July 16th every year".

This is a tale of a girl who seems to love "junk" in her room as well as kittens in her drawers. I wonder though; would Mandy ever learn to keep her room tidy and clean as well as keep her drawers shut? Surely, there must be some kind of growing up?

"Maintenance" is a lovely tale of love that developed between two guys. It is neither about sex nor something about physical love; I believe this tale tells us of a great respect for each other by two guys; an elderly and a younger one. It is a story that developed into a "love and respect" that the younger man felt; and as he realized how much the elderly guy meant to him. Especially when "Alex's heart broke, but there was nobody there to fix it."

Humanity is alive in this short tale.

"Her Smile" did not make me smile as I reviewed it. The slow start to a "killing" was somewhat strange to me at first. Then, I realized that I was reading a tale of how a person becomes a killer. I have read about people changing into killers; and this short tale proved to me that there must be a truth about people who change in one moment, and turn into a killing machine.

This short tale frightens me as well as reminds me that there must be a truth to some tales about people who can change into another, such as one who can snap another's neck and "tossed his lifeless body to the side."

What a fearsome tale...

Wow, what an ending. As I reviewed "Go Figure", I realized I was as confused as the telephone owner as I held my breath to see who was at the front door, but was taken off guard when the man grabbed the telephone and disposed off of the confused person in the telephone.

This short tale catches the reader right at the beginning; and I believe the author has a bright sense of putting words together, using a little confusion, and ending with a "Go figure!", which made me laugh, realizing I have been "caught" off guard...
